Dog Names in relation to Michigan Athletics

Submitted by Zonereadstretch on
Most will probably find this topic corny, but I do enjoy the perspectives and opinions of the community so I figured I’d get your take on helping me out. This coming spring my wife and are hoping to add a chocolate lab to our family; in the meantime we’re trying to compile a list of prospective names to choose from that center around something of common interest to us…one of those being Michigan Football. Ideally we’d like to keep the name to (2) syllables (but not limited) and the name needs to be one for a male. So far my current winner is “Wheatley,” and my wife’s is Schembechler aka ”Schemey” for short. I do have to admit we stole and/or borrowed the name “Schemey” in a way from the owners of a Dalmatian that tailgate over by the Varsity Tennis Complex on game day. Anyway any and all thoughts would be much appreciated. P.S. If you have ideas outside those of Michigan Football, be it Michigan Hockey, Basketball, Campus etc we’re open to those ideas as well.

The little guy in the photo in my profile is named Woodson. The wife got to pick the dog and I got to pick the name. If we get a female, I want to name her Charlie, but I think the best I can get the wife to agree to is Maizey.

I hope you guys really look into adopting. There are so many amazing and loving animals without homes that would love to join your family. My (married) friends adopted a beautiful dog named Elle from the Huron Valley Humane Society this summer. Everyone there is really great, and I'd highly recommend it if you live in Michigan.

I appreciate the sentiments very much and despite looking at Humane Societies and Pet Rescue Shelters early on my wife and I decided to work with a breeder. For what it's worth though my wife did rescue a cat a few years ago, but we can tell even though she's a wonderful animal that she was unfortunately abused as a kitten and those certain tendencies she has have never completely ceased. With a dog bringing more responsibility IMO I wanted to make sure we new exactly what and who we we're dealing with in welcoming a new addition to the family. I have plenty of friends who have gone the rescue route and have ended up with wonderful animals, and others who have had some challenges. All in all as much as it’s saddening to see what’s happened at the shelters due to the economy affecting the owners, I decided against gambling on this one.

I rescued from a Columbus pound and came with the name Celie. While I didn't rename her since she was pretty skittish when we got her, I have trained her to watch Michigan hockey with me on TV and when we score she gets a scooby snack, and when she hears the bullwinkle song, her ears perk up and she starts running around in circles. Best... Dog... Ever. As for name suggestions... I suggest Sieve, Deker, or Ufer. You could even get him/her the equivalent of the General George Patton Victory Horn to play with.

My uncle named his German shorthaired pointer Blitz... his wife and kids call him "Blitzy" though. When my dad and uncle were kids, my grandparents also had a German shorthaired pointer named Winston, after Churchill. My nana was a history teacher and likes to name her pets after her favorite historical figures. Her cat is named Abigail Adams. I also suspect she named my dad John after JFK.

Almost too close to NO but worth it. The dog in my avatar is Oliver. I wanted to name our dog Bo, my wife wanted to name our first son Oliver. I conceded and we named the dog Oliver. Guess our boy will be Bo now. I win.

Ali Haji-Sheikh (or Haji for short) ThreeBarks (Ufer would honk his horn three times for a touchdown) Back in the 70s, there was a dog that pushed a soccer ball around at halftime. The fans would try to encourage him to go into the endzone. Does anyone here remember his name? Johnson (after 60s running back Ron Johnson, who holds the single-game Michigan rushing record of 347 yards and 4th best of 270)

Just call him "Webber." He will gladly accept any handout offered to him, sh*t all over your house, and destroy everything you've worked so hard to build.
