Meh. Tigers have a young team that's fun to watch. Lions always find a way to keep things entertaining. Pistons have Cade and something to look forward to. And I don't follow hockey. All that to say that it could be worse...

The writer is a bit late in the game of blasting Detroit's pro sports teams. While the Lions are still wandering aimlessly, the Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons all appear to be moving in the right direction.

PS: this post should be labeled "OT''.

Reminds me a bit of Detroit sports in the late seventies and early eighties. At various points the Lions, the Tigers, the Pistons and the Red Wings were all awful.

At the same time, they were starting to move in the right direction. The Pistons drafted Isaiah Thomas and started building the core of the team that would eventually be two-time champions. The Red Wings drafted Steve Yzerman and put together a team that would win four Stanley Cups (albeit not until the mid-nineties). The Tigers had a solid core that won one World Series in '84 and made the playoffs in '87.

So I'm hopeful.

(Let's not talk about the Lions.)

It's cyclical*. Between 2002 and 2012 the Wings were in 3 Finals (won 2 Cups), the Pistons were in 2 Finals (won 1 championship) and the Tigers won the American League twice. Right now, all three teams are in rebuilding mode, and I think there's a solid chance at least one but perhaps all of them will make some noise in the coming decade.

*With the exception of the Lions which always suck.

Nice start, but we need to see the O-line against the cheeseheads, PSU & O$U.  Actually we need to see the whole team against better teams.  I am hoping for 9 wins and a very strong recruiting class.  We need a shot of talent to keep the improvement going.

BTW - I like a more balanced mix of run and pass.  With that said I will take whatever the coaches call as long as we win.

This article is Johnny come lately and just piling on. We knew we are the laughingstock of sports for a while now. I'm cautiously optimistic about the state of our pro sports in the near future, Except the Lions, of course are, at minimum, 3 years away,

Little slow on this article.  Really the Wings, Tigers, and Pistons all trending up.  The Lions are the Lions so that is kind of a lay up, but at least the appear to have hired competent front office folks this time.

This is a lazy, extremely late article. The Tigers have been an above .500 team since the end of April. The Pistons just drafted Cade and look ready to challenge for a playoff spot. And the Red Wings are ready to climb out of the cellar. This article will (hopefully) not age well in 12 months.

So real question

Who will make the Playoffs first - Tigers, Red Wings, Lions, Pistons?

My vote is the Tigers (next year)

Easily the Pistons.  So many teams in the NBA make the playoffs, and Cade should be a huge boost to that team.

Tigers have to compete with the White Sox (who have a young productive core, which the Tigers HOPE to have soon) in their division, the Rays, the Red Sox, the Yankees, Blue Jays, Astros, Athletics, Mariners, Cleveland (who probably won't be good), Twins (who won the division last year), and the Angels (not good but they've got a lot of parts).

Out of the entire list of teams the Tigers are competing with only 5 total make the playoffs.  Could it happen?  Sure, but not likely in my opinion, at least not next year or the following.

I don't know much about hockey but the wings are not very good.

The Lions could surprise, but given that they're going to be drafting a QB next year more than likely, it's not looking good for a Big Ben/Steelers type event where a rookie QB takes them to the playoffs.  Maybe 3 or 4 years from now the Lions could be in the playoffs.

It was pretty bad in 1979, too:

Lions: 2-14
Red Wings ('79 - '80): 26-43-11
Pistons ('79 - '80): 16-66

Tigers were 5th place in the AL East but at least cleared .500: 85-76

Detroit has been the capital of bad sports for a while, but these things come around eventually. Remember how Boston fans went from "lovable losers" to obnoxious because they won all the time.
