Submitted by michchi85 on

Michigan today released more information (here) about the open practice/scrimmage.  You must register for your free tickets at mgoblue.com/tickets and the first 300 students at the game will get to watch the scrimmage from the sideline.  Parking at Michigan lots will be free, parking at Pioneer will be $10.

EDIT: Tickets available today at Noon EST, that's why it's not currently up on the site.

W.D. better on the sideline.  That would be a super cool perk.  Unless they mean on the sideline opposite all the players of course - which it might be.  Not sure how you fit and "control" 300 kids behind the bench.  That would just downgrade it from super cool to very cool perk however.

I've never understood the whole obsession with Michigan football for non-students/alumni. This isn't a Wal-Mart Wolverine thing, I don't have that attitude. But I will say it's a kind of strange and creepy. I haven't missed a home Michigan game since I was 5, but had I not been/am a student, I probably wouldn't be on this blog.

How is it "strange and creepy" to support a big-time local (for most non-alumni on this blog) team? I grew up wanting to attend Michigan and play football but things did not work out that way. Because I wasn't a good enough student and athlete means that continuing to have an interest in something that i have followed since I was a kid is creepy? My university does not have a football team, am I suppose to just give up following college football entirely to avoid being "strange and creepy"?

...and being obsessed. Constantly reading about, posting about, getting emotional about a team constitutes obsession. Why have that much invested into an amateur sports team without some sort of connection? Michigan is my alma mater and current school. That's a connection. Having parents or siblings that went or go to the school is kind of a connection. The further I can go on the weaker the connection gets. The fact is, when you have little connection to something but are obsessed with it... yeah it's "kind of" creepy. It's an opinion. You don't have to share it. But all I'll say is there should be much more important things in your life than commenting on a football team you don't have much connection to other than being a fan. It might have something to do with why you weren't a good enough student to get into the school in the first place. Just food for thought.

I grew up in Michigan. Many of my friends are Michigan fans. Many of them didn't go to the school. I go to games and tailgate with them. I watch away games at the bar with them and have parties for bowl games. I don't think they are creepy or weird. That said, I don't know any of them I could text "hey, what did you think of the Brian Cole committment" and not get a "who?" back in response. That's the difference in what I'm referring to.

I hate to sound like a jerk, but did you play? If not, the guys who played, by your logic, could consider you creepy and weird. After all, they have a "real" connection to not only Michigan, but the sports. Of course, were that the case, the Big House would sit 5-10k. In short, your argument is very, very silly. And it is potentially damaging to the program.

So here are two distinct people.

Person A: Grows up in AA and is a Michigan fan from the time they are 7 years old. Goes to many games throughout high school and follows the football team closely. High graduation rolls around and the person decides to be a teacher. They receive a scholarship offer from EMU, a school with an excellect eduational program, and no scholarship offer from UM. They go to EMU because money.

Person B: Grows up in <random state very far from Michigan> has never been to a college football game. This person gets a scholarship offer from Michigan to go study engineering and decides "hey very good engineering school, I'm in".

You are seriously going to argue that person B has more of a "right" to be a die-hard fan who can't get enough coverage of the team than person A?

How do you justify professional sports? Is that weird or creepy? Look at the coverage the combine/draft gets and those guys obviously aren't much older than college players. Are the only peoople allowed to root for the Red Wings people who played for the team or worked for them?

I went to Michigan (twice) but I became a fan of the team long before I became a student. If I hadn't gotten accepted I would still be a fan of the team. To think that I shouldn't/wouldn't be "allowed" to follow them intensely as I choose is just stupid.

Your username is a reference to Calvin and Hobbes, right? How did you develop an interest in that? What is your connection? Do you often read Calvin and Hobbes and does it create any emotional response?

I guess I would consider growing up watching Michigan football every Saturday, pretending to be Charles Woodson, Tom Brady, David Terrell, etc. in the backyard, talking about the games with my Grandpa on Sundays all a connection.

I'll determine what is and what is not important in MY life, thank you. I follow all sports very closely, not just Michigan Football, and have actually made a lot of money because of this which has paid for my college education. Pretty creepy, right?

"It might have something to do with why you weren't a good enough student to get into the school in the first place. Just food for thought."

I didn't neg your other posts because you are obviously entitled to your opinion even if I don't agree with it but had to neg this one, and comment on it, because of how asinine it is.

You are the exact type of person who develops the "egotistical U of M grad" perception that other fan bases hate.

You got into a great school. Congrats and well done. Its something you should be greatful for not something you should lord over people who didn't.

Actually, you DO have the Walmart Wolverine attitude! Your first line makes that clear and you even felt the need to immediately try and temper that position by claiming otherwise. It's OK. You're not alone. And Darryll Rogers would have loved you.

Fun Fact" The word "fan" actually is shortened from FANATIC.

I didn't attend UM. Nor did anyone in my family. Can't think of a single friend that attended UM either. So I guess I have no "connection" to UM football.

Unless of course the following counts:

  • Attended my first game in 1975 and entered a stadium already full with ~100k fans excited to be hosting a highly rated Texa A&M. Old timers on this blog know how that turned out! "Love at first sight" would be a good description of how that day went for me!
  • Season ticket holder since 1979.
  • Away games include IND, WISC, Colorado, MSU, NW, PSU, NW, Citrus Bowl and Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl trip was for my ailing younger brother who wanted 2 things before he passed - to dip his (remaining) foot in the Pacific Ocean and to see UM win a National Championship. (I know, that's creepy because he never attended UM either.) Gladly, I was able to make that a reality with my high-school-educated hard earned dollars!
  • My youngest brother spent 6 weeks in ICU at UM before finally being diagnosed and nursed back to health. I think of him whenever I see a commercial reminding people that MICHIGAN is more than just a football team.
  • My son got a 1 day pass during a week long stay at Mott's at age 11 and we got a dozen tickets and invited relatives to watch UM beat Virginia on a hot Saturday afternoon. What better pick-me-up for a young boy than Meeeeechigan football!
  • Oh, and speaking of Meeeeeechigan, how can someone listen to Bob Ufer during there formulative years and NOT be passionate about Michigan football!?
  • I was listening on my iPad at 3 am in a Bangkok hotel lobby as UM fell just short against OSU last year and swear I was saying GO FOR TWO the moment they scored the last TD! Many memories of being abroad and trying to find a way to listen to the game. (Most before sling box, etc.)
  • Played several times in the Millie Schembechler Golf Classic (they took our money and never asked for any further proof that we were worthy!). Met some great people including Kramer, Dierdorf, Harbaugh and Moeller.
  • My heart was broken by Kordell Stewart and Michael Westbrook. WHY does ANYONE let a QA have time to throw on a situation like that? And then broken again at The Horror.
  • My heart was made whole again with Judgement Day in Happy Valley and many times since including UTL I.

Michigan Football is different things for different people. For me, it's Bo Schembechler and Brady Hoke and everything they represent. It's the Michigan brand - which for me includes the hospitals and people that represent the university.

Michigan Football is a light at the end of an otherwise crappy week of work. Or the icing on the top of a good week.

So, Michigan Football is not YOURS. It's OURS. (Please be careful when you get off that horse!)

[Dang, that was a long rant. Wonder if we got any new commits during that post...]

Great free benefit from the coaches and AD -- bravo.

At first I wondered if this was such a hot idea, giving other teams a chance to watch us scrimmage two weeks before the start of the season.  But they'll get an opportunity to see us by the App State game anyway; App State and Notre Dame will benefit most, but hopefully experience under the lights in front of fans will be of more use to us than the added prep time is for Notre Dame in seeing the basics/personnel of the Nussmeier offense.
