Skip bayless and Rob Parker discuseed DROBs chances in the NFL

Skip says he has a below average arm in terms of strength, but reminds him of Chris johnson as a runner and DROB could be an every down back.

Rob Parker trashed him and said only things that make me hate Rob parker even more now

Fair enough.  I guess I'll bring up the point I made in that thread, then:

They kept bringing up his (lack of) arm strength.  I thought he had a pretty strong arm, is it just the homer in me?  Or maybe because I'm comparing him to other college QBs, and they are comparing him to pro QBs?

tends to equate throwing deep ball with arm strength.  Most QBs, strong arm or not, can throw deep ball.  What arm strength really is the velocity to the hashmark where you really need to zip it before the window close.  That is arm strength.

I agree with you joey that most people think that deep ball = arm strength, but it's not.

He has a strong arm, IMO.  But their only exposure to him is the ND game.  If you watch some plays, his footwork is off when he's rushed and so he under threw a few passes.  Perhaps that's where they're basing their info?  Probably also because he's not 6'6''.

I disagree.  Arm strength has a tremendous amount to do with the deep ball.  Having a cannon for an arm does not automatically mean a QB has nice touch on deep passes, but it definately helps.  A player like Henne, who can throw the ball 70 yards, can throw a pass 40-50 yards with a lot more control than someone like Robinson, who has to use almost everything he has.  It is like long hitting golfer hitting his 7 iron 200 yards vs. me hitting a 3 iron.  It is a lot easier to be accurate with a 7 iron.

Chad pennington cannot throw a consistent deep ball anymore.  Consistently is the key.  There is also something to be said about cornerbacks having to respect a 20 yard out being easier to beat deep.  That is another way that arm strength comes into play.  I am enjoying Denard's play as much as anyone, but to counter an argument that he hasn't shown a really strong arm by saying that a QB doesn't need a strong arm is a bit foolish.

-The whole argument is stupid, anyway.  Why does he have to have an NFL arm?  He is a college player, and he has plenty of arm to run our offense effectively, IMO.  I say we wait three years and let whatever team drafts him worry about his arm.

arm strength.

I'm not down on Denard's arm strength.  It's plenty strong.  My argument is people tends to equate arm strength with deep passes which is false.  Arm strength is the ability to throw between the hashes.  It forces defense to defend the entire field.  Anybody can throw a deep ball but not many can throw between the hashes.

There was an ESPN draft analysis by Scouts, Inc. (or someone like that) examining his potential NFL draft stock that called his arm strength "above average" but not great. So for the most part I think the people who are skeptical of his arm strength are viewing it not in terms of being a successful college QB, but a successful pro.

Which, while (obviously) I love DR, I think everyone is getting a little ahead of themselves here. The vast majority of top-tier college QBs never make it in the NFL. Let's just enjoy the awesomeness as it's happening and worry about the NFL a little bit later.

Is that seriously who they have on that show now?  I might as well listen to my ass cheeks talk to each other and I'll probably get more credible sports talk than watching that show.

He has started 2 games in college and they are already discussing his NFL potential?  And anyway, who cares what his pro potential is, if he can win games and championships at Michigan, I'll be plenty happy with that, and I think he will too.

I can't believe i'm saying this but is there just too much sports coverage lately?  So many things have been analyzed to death and discussed that really have no business being discussed.  For example, why we were subjected to 2 days of analysis of every Tim Tebow preseason NFL outing is beyond me.

Denard's started 2 games in his career at quarterback, and we're now projecting his NFL talent? And he's being compared to the best running back in the NFL? Denard's not even eligible to leave for the NFL until the end of next season, this is the most irrelevant topic in the world right now.

The only interesting question for me is, who is more useless, Skip Bayless or Rick Reilly? That should be a 1st and 10 topic.

Stop mindlessly consuming ESPN (providing them dollas) regardless of what ass-clown is jabbering.  If you watch and (even worse) discuss whatever stupid points they make, you are answering your own question of "why" it's on.  Turn ESPN off, read Mgoblog a few times a day (because you still love Michigan football) and go learn the cello or something in all your new free time.

When covering Michigan football, ESPN will either:

1) say something you knew already because you read this blog

or

2) say something stupid or wrong that might make you angry

Either way it's pointless to consume it.

why the hell would they have Rob Parker on that show? Skip is already a moron. I bet the IQ in that room was slightly below the level of your typical Columbus trailer park.

First, these two guys are clowns.  Second, they are analyzing Denard as if he were entering the draft tomorrow.  He is a sophmore who has played 2 real games.  He has almost three full seasons to get better, develop and work on his weaknesses.  Yes, he really needs to work on his footwork.  Yes, he lacks touch on the deap ball.  Yes, he will need to cut down on the # of wobbly passes (which could lead to picks).

But, he is starting is second freeking game - give the kid time to develop.  In most situations, he would have redshirted this year and would have only been a frosh, playing in his second game.  Why are we talking about his NFL potential now?

The improvement Denard has shown in the past 12 months is incredible; and, if he stays healthy, he'll only get better over the remaining 11 games this season.
Some NFL analysts have to talk about college stars. They should be talking about budding NFL stars, but they're too lazy, so they hitch their wagon to the college coverage.

is what this team needs to do.  Any team that gets on the same field as Michigan should walk away and know that getting beat was no mistake.  The media darlings will follow Michigan's lead and that is a good thing.  Denard was not even in the radar of most media gurus prior to the season and for that matter most Michigan Fans.  This team has a chance to wake up the media and put Michigan Alumni back in their easy chairs.  Michigan's offensive machine is just getting warmed up and the media hates saying they were wrong about Michigan  Football and Coach Rod-leave them no choice.

Obviously if he can make it as a quarterback, that's where people will try him, but at the very least, I would think the way he moves around in open space, a reasonable NFL comparison is Devin Hester.  Really dangerous whenever you put the ball in his hands, which at the pro level could be best as a returner or receiver.

But I wouldn't forget about Antwaan Randle El - he was a QB at Indiana and got some Heisman consideration before going to the NFL and moving to WR and being a top-tier returner.  He's another prototype.

In the more QB-oriented mold, there's always Kordell Stewart, who was solid at QB for a while in the pros.

Still, I think Hester is the best comparison.  The only other guy I've ever watched who I thought could score on any given play at any spot on the field.

Denard = Michael Vick with less arm strength and a lot more accuracy (not to mention Denard actually has a functioning brain in his head).  If Michael Vick can play QB in the NFL, I think Denard can.  He may not turn out to be an All-Pro, but he has the necessary talent to at least be respectable.

And Rob Parker always makes me LOL because every time I see him, I think of his hilariously inaccurate and fabricated story about Kirk Cousins being involved in that fight with the MSU hockey player and Dantonio (rightfully so) calling him out about it publicly.  Most entertaining career implosion of all time.

He's 19 years old with two fantastic college starts behind him.    Why the hell is anybody bothering to care what his NFL prospects are?

2011 he will be a Michigan Wolverine.

2012 he will be a Michigan Wolverine.

After that we will miss him and fondly recall the good times of Dilithium.

have repeatedly demonstrated how little they really know and understand about college football.  I'm surprised people spend time watching that exchange.   No matter what the subject (especially MLB), it's just infuriating.

Rob Parker is as bad as it gets.  Anytime he's on that show he is mis-informed and makes some of the worst arguments that could possibly be made.  Rob Parker is a pissed of journalist that isn't making any money so he has to go on shows like first and ten and pretend that he knows something about anything at all.  Denard doesn't need to have a cannon for an arm in this system, all he needs is to be accurate, and that he is.  I stopped watching these shows a long time ago, I suggest you to do the same.

Early in the ND game he threw from the far hash to close to the sideline on a rope and on time. Cant remember the receiver but that impressed me. Just hope to have him thru 2012.
