DB: No timetable for Michigan mascot

Submitted by Michigan248 on

I searched the site, I was sure this would have already of been posted but found nothing.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon says the school has discussed the possibility of a mascot for the Wolverines, but that it's "not an active project."

There was a bit of a stir when Brandon was quoted in the online magazine Michigan Today saying the university is "interested in doing a mascot but it has to be something that fans love."

Brandon tells The Associated Press that a mascot is something Michigan has discussed because the school wants to connect with younger fans. However, he says there's "no timetable" and no current project to come up with one.

Has anyone heard anything about this?  thoughts?

I agree. The Stanford Tree is the only mascot I can tolerate because it is so obviously the product of the beer-muddled brains of a bunch of wasted frat boys.

It gracefully crosses the line from the cartoon-ish idiocy of most mascots and is ensconced firmly in the warm bossom of pure camp.

Uh Dave, quit while you're ahead. I know he wants to sell the Michigan brand, but unless it's a live wolverine, not a pleasant prospect for the handler even if there were one alive in Michigan, forget it.

I'd be down for a mascot for Michigan, but not a cartoonish just-like-everyone-else kind of thing.

Mascots were originally something the students put together on their own. If M is headed in this direction, I'd rather we lead the charge toward something we like and which is going to have some greater meaning than a dude dressed in an outfit you order from the mascot store.

Just throwin' a not-thought-out idea out there: "Dr. Mott" She's clever and gets us into trouble sometimes, and when not at M sports she's out doing stuff for the kids.

Maybe she drives around on this:

HT (who else) MVictors.

Okay, this is a stupid idea. Point is I'd rather we come up with something and pre-empt the university if they're gonna do something.

Given that it can't or shouldn't be brought to the stadium, it can live at a zoo - the Detroit Zoo.  Since the Detroit Zoo already has wolverines, we can get this worked out by tomorrow.

Edit: At risk of needlessly spreading panic, the fear of all fears with this subject is the slippery slope of going from a primary, goofy mascot to a secondary, truly shameful mascot.  Example: My undergrand alma mater, the University of Kansas, has both "Big Jay" (the typical stupid mascot) and "Baby Jay" (a smaller, cutesy, even more god-awful mascot).   Michigan fans must agree that any Michigan equivalent of "Baby Jay" will at all times be met with napalm.

Wally the Michigan Wolverine mascot from the 1940's? He was the Big Ten's most famous mascot prior to world war II. At that time of the war, in order to cut costs, Wally was left on the side if the road....... Roadkill. Look it up, it's in the media guide. Just like the retro uniforms.

Willy was basically the point of the original thread on this topic.  He was never officially sanctioned by the university, but rather a start-up project by a few student entrepreneurs.  Basically, the school said "fuck that shit" which is what DB needs to say right now.

The only thing Michigan should do with a mascot is what always used to happen to visiting mascot.  Getting posted.  Cheerleaders carrying the fuzzy nut spread-eagled into the north goalposts and leaving him to reconsider the decisions of his life that lead to that point.

I've supported Dave Brandon's decisions so far, but if he EVER tries to bring a mascot to the University of Michigan, I will bitch and whine on MGoBlog like there's no tomorrow.

What gives. We already have a mascot. At least according to the writers of the hit 1980s sitcom, The Hogan Family

Jump to the 3:25 mark, unless you want to learn more about the subplot involving Sandy Duncan being setup on a blind date.

is that nobody has exactly figured out how long it takes to remove an infant wolverine from its den, hand raise it, and teach it not to bite off the hand that feeds it. Once these details are worked out, it will be available on our sidelines for some buckeye nut chomping.

Wait what? Connect with the younger fanbase?

Isn't that what parents are for? To teach you why and how to hate Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Michigan State.

That's whats wrong with kids these days. It's the parents.

"Brandon tells The Associated Press that a mascot is something Michigan has discussed because the school wants to connect with younger fans"

connecting to younger fans with a mascot tells me it must be ages 5-12'ish.. 12 at the very oldest. What kind of demographic is that? Why is that a concern? Piss off all the older long time blues who actually spend money on UofM football.. because you want to connect with younger fans with a cute mascot?

Sorry, I almost NEVER go this route when it comes to Michigan.. but sounds like a cash grab. They'll market the **** out of this new mascot and make millions. I hate this idea.

Once, I would swear, I saw a person dressed in a blue fuzzy costume with a michigan jersey, on tv, during a football game. It was hideous. It was there one week and was never seen again. I remember the terror off it.

The only mascot you guys should have are the LIVE Wolverines. I couldn't imagine seeing a "mickey mouse" Wolverine running around on the sidelines. Just wouldn't sit right.
