that means it's time to spend some time today gathering and dusting off the tailgating gear in preparation.

I've already shopped for the adult beverages for Saturday, so time to place an (x) there on my checklist.

M-pire... Now that's a great expression. I may have to start using that if you don't mind.

and be pretty upbeat for someone who started last year, and may not start this year.  This should help him be prepared for when he does get his opportunity.  I hope he is successful when the opportunity arises.

This defense will lead the way this year. I'm really excited to see how they perform in our non-conference matchups. The ND and Utah games will be really good tests for us early. I can't wait to tailgate in less than a week!! Go Blue!

in the last two games.  It just looked like we had a defense on the field.

Ohio State had a great offense last year.  A lot of teams struggled with them.  Braxton Miller and Carlos Hyde were a very tough combination, and they had a great offensive line.  We likely won't see an offense like that this year.

Kansas State was just awful right off the bat.  We couldn't stop that Lockett kid, and the fact that our offense couldn't do anything didn't help.  Our D played well in the second half against KSU, but our offense just didn't help them out at all.

Seperate from a player, I just really like the vibe he gives off as a person.  He's well spoken, he doesn't complain, he always has a good attitude, he has an engaging smile...he just seems like a good guy.  I really enjoy seeing good people do good things.

Plus he reminds me of my friend Matt King who played LB at UMaine and is now their strength coach.

Probably one of my top all-time favorite players at Michigan. I actually got to see him play in the state championship at the Silverdome when I was a kid when he played for Dearborn Heights Robichaud.

That's why Wheatley was so incredible.  He is both the biggest and the fastest UM RB I can remember.  That doesn't come around very often.  Denard's speed in Wyatt Shallman's body, and that's not an exaggeration.  Think about it.

EDIT:  We'll see if Ty Isaac can put it all together, because from a physical standpoint, he's the closest we've had to that in a while.

I suspect that disappeared at football distances with equipment on. It doesn't matter though, both of them wore Winged Helmets!

Both of them hold records that still stand today, btw.

Coaching lessons resonating with a player, depth and competition - from one of the greatest running backs to don a Winged Helmet.

From Go Blue!: Michigan's Greatest Football Stories by Steve Kornacki

"I had a chance to witness these guys," Wheatley said. "I learned you never, ever gave up around your teammates. It goes back to Gary Moeller and that scene from Dead Poets Society, where they are looking in the trophy case and learn of carpe diem. They are told, "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may. Carpe diem... Seize the day!"

That line was from a Robert Herrick Poem

"And that stuck with me," Wheatley continued,. "On days when I was hurt, I looked to my right and saw Ricky Powers. I looked to my left and saw Tshimanga Biakabutuka and Jesse Johnson. If they got a chance to seize the day, they would. So I had best seize the day."

And so that is why he played hurt in the Rose Bowl and against the Buckeyes.

First and foremost, it is a great relief that Game Week is here at last because a long summer of waiting is finally over and we will finally be talking about actual Michigan football this time next week.

Second, I am pretty excited to see what Ross can do this year - I think only Ramon Taylor racked up more tackles than Ross last year, so he's definitely a been a nice presence out there. He has a great attitude too, which is nice to see from someone competing for time in one of the team's deeper units.

I'd like to see the 1st and 2nd, even the 3rd string get extended playing time. This App St team isn't near the team of 07, so i'd like the coaches to treat it like an exhibition and play anyone who isn't gonna redshirt. Final score should be irrelevant, long as we win.

You're insane. This isn't like an NFL exhibition game just because it's App St. This is the season, and the polling is entirely subjective this year. You have to look good every game if you want to move up in the polls. Do you not remember last year when we steadily fell all the way out of the poll in spite of going undefeated to start the season? Crush the teams you should. 3rd string can play In mop up time.

going on down here in the worst state ever this fall.  New "mercy" OHSAA rule for football 1.64:

Running Clock: After the first half of regular season 7th-8th grade, sub-varsity
and varsity contests, any time the score differential reaches 30 points or
more, a running clock shall be used. After the 30-point differential has been
met but the score drops below 30 points, the clock reverts to regular timing.
Running clock procedures, which include when the clock will still be stopped,
are published on the OHSAA website and in the OHSAA Football Manual.

It is noted as an option by National Federation Football Rules, so states can implement if they want to.  Here are a couple others that I found, and when the differential kicks in:

  • Kentucky - 36 points (at any time in the game)
  • Florida - 35 points (losing coach's option after the half, mandatory after 3 quarters)

Have other folks been around games where this has been used?  Are there other states out there that have implemented it?  Are any as low as the 30 point differential as Ohio?  Does it really make the losers feel any better to lose quicker?  More to my watching concerns, should I expect to see it in action when Brother Rice travels down here to Jake Butt's old high school this fall?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh.

This is exactly why some people shudder over the first App State game.

I fully support the inclusion of each and every player - after the score is 50 to a couple of field goals. Along the path to a return to winning ways, the first team needs to learn how to keep the pressure on a team and destroy their will to compete. They can't do that from the bench.

The score is not irrelevant as long as the media hacks are using it as any kind of yardstick.

Treating App State like an exhibition is exactly why we lost to them in the first place. Even though this team isn't the same one that was winning I-AA titles left and right, don't think for one second that they won't be foaming at the mouth for a chance to upset us again. They've got absolutely nothing to lose in this game, so we'll be getting their A-game. I want us to be up by at least 30-40 before we pull our starters.

blowout win and dominating performance from the defense, which I think is highly likely. However, the usual first game caveats in execution should also be factored in. That said, this game will be an overall winner with a good offensive line showing and solid pass protection.

If Ross is one your linebacker backups, you are pretty good shape defensively. And this might be the first time sijnce the first App State game that Michigan has a defense you could confidently say that about.

the following would be great:

- No injuries

- Improved O line play

- Strong rushing effort

- No turnovers

- Multiple forced turnovers

- Multiple sacks

- Nothing revealed offensively for ND

- Everything else that will benefit us

That's all I request.
