Copper Bowl Open Thread, MSU vs. TCU
MSU got a huge boost on a muffed punt
Lol I don't really care if msu wins at this point. This whole game was a disgrace to offense anyway.
...seeing that Spartan offense.
What a gift. Return man just gave the game to MSU. Let the ball go in the end zone.
Stefan Logan is shaking his head at that one.
The yardage gain from that fumbled punt has to be equal to MSU's entire offensive output
Why in the fuck would they bring Maxwell back in?
Why would you not be handing off to Bell 3 times at this point?
For a .500 team, MSU has had incredible luck when it's come to fumbles this year. They seem to recover all of their own and a lot of their opponents'.
But incredibly bad luck everywhere else, 5 of their 6 losses are by 13 combined points
But those games might have been more lopsided if they didn't have the great turnover luck. They twice fumbled deep in their own territory against us, for instance, and recovered both.
Also, they've won a few close games, too (Boise, Indiana, Wisconsin).
BS. Good teams find a way to win.
3 of their 6 wins are by a combined 11 points. And the Eastern game was a toss-up until the end. Sparty's record accurately reflects them as a mediocre team: great defense, awful offense
...must be written on the front cover of the media guide.
Yep. Against us, they fumbled twice inside their own 10 yard line and recovered both.
They've also been very fortunate when it comes to INTs. TCU has dropped three potential INTs tonight.
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? [throws sword]
Well shit. Time for bed.
Lmao the announcers are praising the OC after that? Everyone except him knew the ball needed to be given to Bell.
What a genius, coordinating a drive of 4 yards.
MSU is setting itself up nicely for its typical SPARTY NOOOO defensive breakdown to end the game.
W 29 yards?
They haven't completed a pass yet this quarter--0 for 3 with 2 sacks.
to anyone, but when I see Dantonio's face..... I just want to punch the shit out of him!
To screw up a 2.5 point spread too.
Fire ALL the offensive coordinators!!
I'd fire the DC. All the dropped int's in the first half and missed fumble recoveries are what kept Sparty in this game. Maxwell has been begging for an inglorious end to his career all night.
They are turrible.
"Michigan State has not controlled the game with their offense."
TCU really has shat the bed ever since they went up 13-0. It just took awhile for Sparty to finally take advantage.
That's the sparty we're used to...
Pretty bad call though
That's a bad call.
self-destruct sequence has now commenced...
Angry Dantonio is Best Dantonio
Try and score a TD.
What a moron. Keep calling timeouts please.
Why did MSU call a timeout? It is third and forever.
If TCU scores a TD I think this is over.
MSU might be able to muster a FG if needed but we'll see.
Now a 53 yd fg
3rd and 13 and you call a QB draw that hasn't worked all night?
Good God is this OC bad.
Wow. Hell of a kick.
Now we know why they called timeouts.
Kickoff and touchback!
53 yard FG. #33 is all set with the ladies for tonight.
Cook the savior
Alright... WTF with the timeout??? First of all you don't want TCU getting the ball back, and you just got 2 quick first downs... Waste time.
I don't want to hear what a defensive genius Patterson is if a frosh with no experience can beat his D here.
You're comparing Cook - a guy who didn't start and has played like four drives all game (and maybe 10 all season) - to the Heisman winner?
Plus, he was at Bama and going up against a guy who has an three national titles. I f Saban can be exposed by a frosh anyone can.
So you are comparing Cook to the guy who won the Heisman?
47 yarder...but Dan Conroy has been historically solid.
MSU is fucking stupid
1. Hand off up the middle on 3rd is PREDICTABLE
2. TCU has timeouts left! Why wouldn't you wait to snap that?! You left too much time.
For the ice
They need it more now.
Saving all the unpredictable plays for Michigan next year.
Conroy looks nervous.
Brunettes are already taken
This is setting up pretty damn well for SPARTY NO
Still plenty of time. TCU just needs a FG and that kicker got a 53 yarder.
I found your problem. You were assuming the TCU offensive braintrust could put ANYTHING together.
The game continueth.
This mouse is dreadful. I need a new one.
There is no such effing thing as a go-ahead field goal and you should be ashamed of perpetuating such nonsense, announcer.
Why is that? Isn't it a FG to go ahead? Do I not know what that term means?
"go-ahead" has been forced away from its natural relationship with the word "touchdown", where it means the blocking has opened up a gaping hole, or Koger fools everybody in the northeast corner. A FG is always difficult to make and cannot be considered a sure thing under any circumstances.
I guess we were thinking about different meanings of the phrase. Sorry about the confusion.
So then what is a "go-ahead" HR in baseball or a "go-ahead" three in basketball? I think you just don't know what the term means. It's any score that puts the team ahead when they were not before the play. You could have a go ahead safety.
My question was rhetorical, I know what those things are. My point is that just because you've made up your own meaning for a phrase doesn't mean a "go ahead FG" doesn't exist and you probably shouldn't get upset when the announcers correctly refer to one as such.
How drunk were you buddy? Not only did you give the most absurd meaning of the term "go ahead" conceivable, but given the context you still couldn't piece the definition together...
Announcers gloss on Dantonio going back to his 2nd stringer
Sparty fan is wetting himself right now.
have been fun to watch and competitive....finally
That was definitely Pass Interference.
Yup, that TCU return guy blew the game. He did the one thing that could save MSU's putrid offense: make them only have to go 6 yards.
Exactly. That was the play of the game, no doubt about it. If he fields that cleanly, TCU wins this game pretty easily.
I think that's the game ladies and gentleman
BIG TEENNNN ftw finally
to start winning some of these games, even tho it's Sparty
Conference prestige and bowl payout monies for everybody! Have a cigar.
if I have some Single Malt with said cigar?
Sparty pulls it out.
Couch burning pic still applies.
MSU should be thanking their punter.
Zoltan Mesko, 2008.
Sparty celebrating like they just won a BCS bowl...
Oh, yeah, forget about that...
TCU is a disgrace. That return guy sucks. Let the ball go into the end zone!!
All-time error there. Push the ball a) towards the endzone and b) away from opposing players!
but that was a good win for the B1G
Either the B1G wins or msu loses
Get out the popcorn and enjoy the comity.
But I thought Michigan was their bowl game?
BIG TEN!!! HELL YES!
It looks like the Michigans are going to save the Big Ten in bowl season.
Oh well. Win for the B1G, and I think Sparty will again be mediocre next year.
But going with Cook is hardly a genius move when Maxwell was sucking as badly as he did (and really has all year).
Maxwell wasn't really as bad as everybody made him out to be. His receivers dropped so many passes throughout the season and ran such lazy 6 yard routes, so it was really the receivers that made him look pathetic.
I don't really agree with that. Sure early in the year they were terrible, but they survived that for the most part. After that it became a magnification of that being the thing. Every team drops balls. They came to be average to slightly below average once Burbridge emerged. And Sims is an elite TE as a receiving option. There weren't many (any?) B1G teams with more than one elite receiving option, and many/most teams had below average WR's.
And any team with Bell as the RB should have play-action wide-openness of WR's built in. Not necessarily because he's great, but because he's a load and you want to meet guys like that near the line (pulling LBs into the play action early).
But you don't really need me to argue that he was bad. His own coach benched him for a freshman on the last drive of their bowl game.
He's pretty bad. His lack of the slightest movement is his main problem.
He does have the uncanny ability to make it seem like he's running in slow motion though. That can be quite entertaining for everyone except State fans.
The RB was wide open if boykin had just thrown it short
I realize that there was an offensive holding call on the play, but jeez, what a rotten throw.
So......Iowa is better than TCU, got it thanks Bdubs.
Off a defensive holding call, but they pick up the interference flag that would have offset the penalties for TCU and effectively ending the game. Meh.
in a good way
I guess Connor Cook is now the threat?
You will recall he is from that weird town in Ohio with all the vultures.
Kudos to MSU. They controlled the second half of this game. They ran the ball on a pretty stout D and got some opportunistic passing going. So the Big Ten is 1-1 and has looked respectably in both games.
BTW, this is about the third time this season someone has said "Quick, what are they saying on the RCMB?" in the middle of a game MSU was losing - and each time, they went on to win and this board looked ridiculous. How about you at least wait until the game is over to obsess over MSU fan reaction?
You're the one obsessing over obsessing over fan reactions.
Your ideas are intruiging to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
Score one for the Big Ten.
Good to be competitive and win some of these games. Stronger conference means more opportunities especially with the impending playoff unless BIG champion is garunteed a place.
Really want to shut down the Essss Eeee Seeee on Tuesday.
Doesn't the real trophy reside in Madison?
I believe either of the above are acceptable. Win B1G or go home!
a win for the BigTen......
Sparty definitely got some help from the officials on their last drive and on TCU's last drive. Too bad: it would have been great to see them go 6-7 this year.
Sparty won? Dang, going back to bed.
Feeling way better about the State game next year the more I watch them play. I can't picture their offense being much better than what we saw this year. If Bell and Sims, bolt probably worse. Neither of those quarterbacks present many problems for a defense.
I would think Sims is going to leave, really think his stock is at a high now. If Bell somehow is graded as a late 1st or early 2nd round, I think he'll leave, thing is, I doubt he is a top 2 round player at this juncture, however, with a better oline, he could be good. I think if he returns, their season will be similar to this year, win total ranging from 6-10. We will more than likely have issues on offense too due to a new oline and a struggling ground game.
Bell is definitely a Top 2 round player. The fact that their O-Line is that bad, but he's still putting up those rushing numbers says something
You are right, he does not have very good speed. He compares to LeShoure, and I think the Lions picked him late 1st round. If he is projected as at least a 2nd rounder, he should go due to RB's injury possibilities, not that he is a lattimore type back, but I think the general rule with RB's is if you have a chance to be picked in the top 3 rounds, you leave.
Sparty played last night? That goes to show how much I worry about them. Wake me up when they are relevant.
You've lost 4 of the last 5 to them...
I went to bed and woke up and said geez what happened?
I hope that we can hold up our end of the B1G bargain on Tuesday. While I hate MSU with a serious passion, I think we need to acknowledge that they beat an SEC team in their bowl game last year, and--lemon-sucking look or not--that Dantonio and his team have earned serious respect on the national stage. Even their uniforms kinda looked okay last night (he offered grudgingly).
Between Minny's valor and inspired defensive effort against Tech and the Spartans, the Big Ten is off to a better start than I expected.
I agree, as much as I hate sparty I am happy the big ten got their first bowl win against a respectable team. Now Jan 1st will either be another year where we see how the rest of the big ten pans out
As a Michigan fan either way I end up happy with the result.
