Congrats to the new Wolverines. (Acceptance letters went out today).

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

Congrats to all of the new Wolverines who were admitted today. Students who applied for early admission were notified electronically a few hours ago.  If you have a kid, sibling, cousin, nephew, or you yourself were a HS senior who was admitted today, come forth and receive your welcome.

Go Blue and for those who got good news today, welcome to the family.

EDIT: I still have my old school paper admissions letter and will until I die.

Man this is incredible. It's pretty weird that I have been a fan of a school (mainly the football team of course) since I can remember and I would have had zero chance of qualifying or paying to attend there. This doesn't give me hope that my spawn will have the option either.

I'm glad things were not like this back in 1976 when I applied.  My 3.8 GPA and so-so 1170 SAT got me in easily (I think at least) back then.  And I had several friends with less numbers who also got in.  At the same time, I believe there has been "grade inflation" since then.  There were no GPA's above 4 when I went to school for example.

U-M receives applications from many more students than there is space to enroll. We aim to enroll about 50 percent of the incoming first-year class in Early Action. Due to the volume of highly competitive applications received in Early Action, many qualified students will be deferred and reconsidered in Regular Decision. Writing, calling, or visiting U-M at this time will not influence the final decision of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, though we do encourage students to submit their first semester senior year grades as soon as they become available. The office will send final decision letters for deferred applicants by early April, and that information is published in the letter students received from admissions. Patience is a virtue!

That paragraph was in an email that went out to all of us Alumni Student Recruiters. If you got deferred DO NOT GIVE UP HOPE. They'll review everyone who got deferred again in late January/early February and as they'll continue to roll admissions for the next two months. Maybe half or just over half of the kids who ultimately be on campus in September have gotten in at this point.

Among the things I keep in my house safe is actually my acceptance letter to the University Of Michigan, for like the OP, I plan to hang onto that thing until I am no longer here to hang onto it. That was a day that meant a lot to me and still does.

Congratulations to all the new Wolverines out there! You're about to embark on something that will pay dividends throughout your life by joining the Michigan community.

I never thought about it until I saw you write this. I absolutely should have kept that letter.

What a huge day that was in my life. I did manage to keep all the recruiting letters I recieved because that seemed fun but nothing shaped my life more than that U of M acceptance letter. My world was instantly changed.

after 5 long years, i finally graduated from UM on Sunday.  Fuck the engineering school, fuck EECS, fuck everything.  I love this school, and am so glad I got my degree from here.  EECS 485 though...

I graduated EE from UM about a quarter century ago. Just graduating with good grades was the hardest thing I think I've ever done. I've had a very successful career and my teams and I have done some great things but I swear it has been easier than just surviving some of those EECS classes.

All that pain and suffering seems to have made everything else I've had to do seem easy in comparison.

Congrats to the new Wolverines and their proud parents! This is truly the greatest university in the world. I'm finishing my seventh and final year here this spring, and I'm going to miss it like hell. Don't take it for granted.

There are plenty of other threads and/or plenty of other days that you could have been a douche on, and would have been nice if you hadn't picked this one, but since you did....

and given your attitude about what is one of the happiest days a parent and child could have, I certainly hope you don't procreate.
