Coaching Rumours/Potential Openings

Submitted by ghost on

Jason La Confora is reporting that Bill O'Brien is ready to return to the NFL and that the Vikings, Texans and possibly the Redskins are interested.  La Confora states that O'Brien's potential buyout is less restrictive this year and that PSU may face litigation if they attempt to collect a buyout from O'Brien because of he NCAA sanctions that were levied against them.

FWIW, I've got a poll up on TTB asking what Big Ten school is most likely to be searching for a head coach next, and 30% of voters have picked Illinois so far.

I don't buy it.  Why would he leave?  He's only been there two years, has done very well, is recruiting well, and is getting the sanctions reduced.  Sounds like a pretty good situation to me.  He just doesn't seem like the type to jump ship to me.  I always have a bias in these conversations though because personally I'd much rather be a college coach than a pro coach.  More stability if you're good, better environment, less divas to deal with...

His career goal is probably to be an NFL head coach. He was probably passed over for some NFL gigs because he lacked head coaching experience (NFL teams might be gun shy about Belichick assistants after Crennell, McDaniels, et al). So PSU is and has been a stepping stone for him the whole time. He has some success despite his handicaps and proves his head coaching mettle. Here comes the NFL. Its not that hard to envision something like that.

As much as I ultimately don't care that much re who coaches Texas -- the hiring doesn't much affect us, unless the coach comes from a rival -- I'll thrill in the forthcoming coaching chain-reaction. Love watching opposing coaches have to explain away why they suddenly abandoned teams on the eve of bowl games. Brace for Greed Bowl '13.

I'm honestly expecting an underwhelming hire for Texas. I know we all like to talk about how it's going to be a high profile guy, but I can definitely see them going with a guy like Major Applewhite, Narduzzi (small chance), or a lesser known head coach like a Tim DeRuyter from Fresno State.

USA Today has their own idea for the future of Texas here (LINK)

At the top of their list, perhaps not without surprise because he is most familiar with the region, is Mike Gundy. I don't know what it would take to get him away from Oklahoma State, but he did listen to Tennessee, so perhaps he would listen to Texas. Who knows.

They also list Jimbo Fisher, Gus Malzahn, Charlie Strong and - interestingly - Mark Dantonio. The author here considers Dantonio a dark horse but worth consideration, saying:

"If not as big-time as Saban, not as trendy as Fisher, not as local as Gundy or as explosive as Malzahn, Dantonio would put the bread and butter back in Texas football."

I have a hard time envisioning Gundy leaving OK ST. He played there, so you would think it is his dream job. I can definitely picture Charlie Strong to Texas, if only because Louisville is simply not a job you stay at for the long haul when you have his type of coaching potential. Jimbo Fisher isn't leaving FSU. They are a powerhouse this year and recruit in the fertile lands of Florida, why would he leave, there is nothing to gain. Malzahn could definitely jump because Auburn is simply not a secure job, see Gene Chizik. Also, Texas is reportedly his dream job. Dantonio is too old.

I'm always wrong about this stuff, but the Chip Kelly talk is intriguing. I don't think he's thrilled with being in the NFL, and said that talk about him going to Texas was "speculation" (duh) instead of adamantly denying it.
