Chicago Bears out of the Harbaugh sweepstakes?!

Submitted by Rescue_Dawn on

"Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles is also reported to be on Chicago’s short list of potential interviewees. San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh, a former Bear, has been mentioned, but his salary demands are likely too rich for ownership’s liking."

I really really don't see the bears making a play for harbaugh. McCaskeys isn't going to clean house, pay Phil Emery and Marc Trestman and the rest of the staff the remainder of their contracts AND pay harbaugh the money he will require.

I also saw a posting on Rotoworld earlier today saying Mike Smith is likely out in Atlanta unless they make playoffs (somehow still a possibility!!).  It did mention Broncos OC Gase, Pats OC McDaniels, and some other person as potentials.  Person is probably shooting from the hip but no mention of Harbaugh which was great.

I think his personality issues have been discussed throughout the league and I bet there are less suitors for him than we think.  Maybe the Raiders but that could be it, especially with teams with meddling owners (that includes the Jets, as well as the Raiders).

Can anyone confirm which agent? It's been written on this blog that if JH returns to college he'll change agents to a guy who specializes in repping college coaches?

That's been tossed around as a theory why his current NFL agent Dunn was leaking things, to let NFL teams know the number to match?

i don't know why you would need to have different agents, or if there are other agents that rep both pro and college coaches, but supposedly Dunn does not.

Jimmy Sexton is the most powerful college football coach agent. Saban, Fisher, Mora. http://www.si.com/college-football/2014/01/03/jimmy-sexton-college-foot…

Sexton is also who I suspect was Colin Cowherd's "west coast" leak. I think that Cowherd was hinting at Mora to UM. That would be big for Sexton because the contract at UM would be easily twice as much as Mora makes at UCLA.

Bear fan here, but I would give Trestman another year with a new QB and D Cord.

That being said this is about Harbaugh and the Bears were never in the game. Way to cheap. The McCaskey's need to sell the team before any real change happens. Harbaugh to Michigan if he is smart.

Bears are notoriously cheap and is the best reason to assume they won't be competition. If he was to come to Chicago that would mean his heart is completely nfl oriented.

This was probably coming down between us and the Raiders anyway. The Raiders will sell their collective souls to get Harbaugh. It's just going to be a matter of whether or not he really wants to be in the NFL anymore.

Nor the Hawks or Oakland. Jim has experienced enough meddling counterproductive owners and managers.

I say Michigan for six years and then the Dolphins for a Superbowl title hunt. Ross will have six years to lay a foundation for Jim. Jim will leave Michigan with a succession plan and coaching continuity, Hackett will plow the path for him. It's the best set of decisions for all the interested parties on the logic tree. He's coming.

Furthermore, Cutler’s reputation of being uncoachable will make it difficult to find a new coach willing to come in and take over the situation. However, Mike Shanahan, who was Denver’s head coach when the Broncos drafted Cutler in 2006, is said to be interested in reuniting with his former pupil.

I had thought that Shanahan was owed another $7 million by Washington and that if he found a job while he still would have otherwise been under contract had he not been fired, the difference would be deducted from the amount owed. If he wants a nice payday upfront, maybe it behooves both him and the Bears to be cheap. We shall see how this pans out, I suppose.

Glad to see the Fish and Bears likely out of the Harbaugh competition.

As a Jets fan, I think it's fair to say most of us have no idea what's going to happen with us, and there are very few rumors about potential candidates. I think the general consensus is the probability of Rex being gone is 50-75% (players love him, work hard for him, always a great D) and probability of 2nd year GM Idzik being gone is 25-50%. Most likely Rex is fired but Idzik will get to try to bring in his own coach, but many fans wanna see both gone or give Rex another year with hopefully improved QBs and DBs on the roster (the team isn't bad except for those glaring deficiencies, which most blame on Idzhik).

My primary allegiance is always to M, and I also think Harbaugh would be a better fit there and it would make for a perfect story. Most people assume Idzik is sticking around but will be on the hot seat, and I don't think that's ideal for Harbaugh.

My only real concern would be if Woody Johnson is desperate enough to fire both Rex and Idzik and give Harbaugh full control. He can be stingy at times (Revis) but has also been willing to make a splash (Favre). Luckily, most Jets fans/media don't have much reason to be very optimistic about our chances with Harbaugh.

Die-hard Jets fan here... No chance Rex or Idzik are back next year. Idzik has proven he had no clue what he's doing and Rex needs a change of scenery. There's even less of a chance that alligator arms, Woody Johnson, pays harbaugh his open market value.

These other team options are dropping bc it's known harbaugh is coming to AA. If this contract leak didn't ignite rumors of "team x wants harbaugh and is willing to match any offer" they aren't out there. Could be Jim told his agent to leak it to get feelers for what other options he has. Oakland is not an option. I cannot fathom anyone with experience and options taking that job. Yeah, it's an nfl job but so is the Jaguars and no one is jumping at that tire fire.

A lot of local media here clamoring for Harbaugh to the Jets.  I think the Jets will be the last hurdle.  If they give Harbaugh a full control plus comparable salary, I could see that being the "gamechanger" we're all talking about.

Remember, THE JETS INTERVIEWED HARBAUGH IN 2009 before hiring Rex Ryan, and they are not afraid to spend money, so let's hold tight.

I can barely believe the 49ers would willingly part with Harbaugh right now.

He took them to the playoffs for the 1st time in 10 years, to the NFC championship game for the 1st time in 15, to the Super Bowl for the 1st time in almost 20, and to 3 straight NFC championship games.

And it just year 4 he'll go 7-9 at worst and they think "Better get rid of this guy". Morons, all of them. They deserve Matt Millen as their next coach

Some organizations get a taste of success and somehow what they have isn't good enough. As a Browns fan, 7-9 is literally the best that team has done in 7 years; 7-9 is clearly a down year for Harbaugh. I'm very surprised that they are so willing to get rid of him. Who are they going to get who will do better?

JETS fans!!! I know there is a large and natural overlap between the University of Michigan and NY Jets fans but please, be objective. Nobody doubts the bottomless pocketbook or lure of the 'NY media market' (see Eric Decker and Tim Tebow) when ANY free agent, coach or otherwise, is in play but 'signing Harbaugh' would just be the JETS trying to buy the headlines once again. Rex Ryan was the PERFECT fit You think Harbaugh would put up with/survive the douche bag NY media?

Brandstatter tells a story about how Ditka knocked out his brother Art Jr.'s teeth in college during a game.  So there's that.

oops supposed to be a reply... posting there.
