"..... the cheapest pair of tickets to “The Game” next year are $526."

Submitted by Ezekiels Creatures on April 13th, 2023 at 10:08 PM

By next year he means this Fall, November 25, 2023. And it is a pair.

I've never been to The Big House, let alone for "The Game". So I don't know how this compares to other years.

Those of you with experience, could you chime in on how this compares to other years? Maybe it's the same as in other years at this time. I don't know.

I haven't been to the osu game since I was a student. Given that it's now typically Thanksgiving weekend (back then it was the weekend before typically) do a fair number of students sell their tickets? How does that work nowadays?

I used to buy student tickets off Facebook even after I graduated. They were relatively easy to find and not super pricey.

But now with tickets being paperless I haven't done it. There were scams before and I can only imagine it's even worse now. I feel like you have to know a student nowadays

I really feel like college football ticket prices are a bubble that has to burst at some point.  What percentage of households can afford 4 season tickets (+concessions, parking, etc)?  I wouldn't think it's that many, but the stadium keeps selling out (or so they claim... there's always some empty seats around.)

This isn't necessarily directed at your friend, but just because you technically can afford something doesn't mean you should. I'm constantly amazed at the amount people spend on non-essentials. Like where are people getting this money? But then I realize that something like half the country has no savings, and it makes a little more sense...

Well that's fine, and I guess we (myself included) shouldn't judge value for things that seem non-essential, but the flipside is that many of these people need to realize the consequences of their spending habits. The number of people that have virtually no savings, and no or almost no retirement savings, is staggering. If these people are fine with the reality that they'll likely have to work well into their 70s, if they are ever able to retire at all, ok fine. But if not, that's when Ant and Grasshopper style resentment starts to boil over.

It's no different than the two schools of thought that formed around Biden's student loan forgiveness plan. One the one hand, you had the people with the outstanding loans supporting loan forgiveness, some of whom undoubtedly still had loans because they prioritized other spending instead of paying them off. And on the other hand, you have a coalition of people who already paid off their loans, went to more affordable schools to keep the cost down, found alternative funding sources so they didn't have to take out loans (like the military), forwent college altogether, etc., asking why they should be forced to pay for this.

Unfortunately, we live in a society where people finance purchases like mowers, tvs etc and buy the newest phone every year. A lot of people have no clue how to manage money. I know multiple people making over 200k a year in the Midwest who are living paycheck to paycheck. The normalization of living above your means is, at least in my opinion, a true epidemic.

I mean it all depends on where you live. I am on the outskirts of a central Ohio suburb on a couple acres of land in a nice house, but by no means a mansion. My household income is below 250 and I feel like I am in a good position. My only counter point is I have friends who have multiple kids with a household income under 150k who are sound finically. They do not live in a neighborhood where most people drive a luxury car, but it is a decent area, they can’t go out to eat as often as others and my friend can’t get new golf clubs often, but it is doable and I would say they are happier than people I know who make much more money. The issue is people get a raise so they automatically spend more money. Another thing I have seen is people buying designer clothes for kids who are not even school aged and it blows my mind every time. People just seek validation from others through purchasing materialistic things. It all comes down to realizing there is no need to compare the yourself to others and to live within your own budget.

I'm in the 2nd group. I took a huge loan to finance my UM grad degree and upon graduation in 2011 and job start decided to forgo big purchases (still loved comfortably in a 1b1b appt).

Managed to save and pay off in 4 years. But I guess I'm an idiot, shoulda just bought a house and let uncle sam pay my debts.

It's probably higher than I imagine on the number of households that can afford 4 season tickets; how many of those households may have to give up other non-essential stuff they don't need is much lower.  For instance, I have an acquaintance who tells me while he's smoking a cigarette and drinking a beer how nice it must be to afford season tickets.

It's not necessarily popular, and you have to walk a fine line because it borders on political, but there is definitely a disconnect between the constant narrative that it's becoming unaffordable to live in this country, etc., and yet how people continue to pay money hand-over-fist for non-essential, and sometimes bordering on frivolous, things.

It's interesting to see this post coming on the heels of yesterday's board post about the negative impact of commercial breaks on in-stadium experience.  While I'd love to see commercials cut back to improve the viewing experience, frankly, I suspect that the powers that be will look at ticket sales and TV revenue and conclude that they don't need to change a thing.

The most expensive games I can recall were in the $300-$350 range per ticket on Stubhub the night before the game (UTL1, UTL2).

Do people even have tickets to resell at this point, or is it just season ticket holders or something? Individually purchased tickets used to go out later, back in the mailing days.

There's no way there's an accurate market for this yet. It's April. Football season is months away, and I assume tickets haven't even been distributed yet.

I wouldn't put any stock in this, other than noting that, obviously, one would be foolish to sell tickets one knew one would have right now unless one was going to make a boatload of money, which I assume any sellers listed now are doing.

I actually rather enjoy inviting them to our place to see their trauma firsthand. If only we could filter out the violent and aggressively obnoxious buckeyes which, now that I write that out, makes me realize that leaves exactly -2.

Kidding (kind of) there are classy ones and I’m glad to see The Big House full even if there’s more red in there than I’d prefer.

People don't have their season tickets yet, so I assume supply will go up and price down once those go out and some people choose to sell them. Then we'll probably see the price creep up throughout the season.

Actually, with season tickets not out and I don't think single game tickets being sold yet either, what tickets are these that are being sold in the post?

I always felt like every year we have a team that has the talent to beat OSU, we have always played at The Shoe. After the past two years, I am starting to think we not only have more talent but it doesn’t even matter where we play. I know historically most of the time it evens out that home teams win their games but I just feel Harbaugh has something brewing and Ryan Day is in way over his head. These are just deep thoughts by bdneely4 so take them for what they are worth. Free or +- mgopoints. Go Blue!
