CC: Pat Fitzgerald

Haven't seen his name mentioned that much so I thought I'd throw it out there for discussion.

Pros

- Young (39) and energetic

- Maximizes talent, always seems to do more with less

- Recruits to a school with high academic standards

- Is on the AFCA's Ethics Committee

- Seems flexible when it comes to QB style - pocket passer (Siemian), primarially a runner (Kolter), dual-threat (Persa)

Cons

- Might be hard to pry him away from his alma mater

- Hasn't actually won anything (i.e. a division or conference title) other than a few bowl games

- Some people aren't fans of his sideline antics. I don't really care; I'll take someone who might look like a bit of a prick over Hoke and his dazed and confused sideline demeanor.

Response, bullet by bullet:

- Young (39) and energetic
Maybe the truest thing about this post.

- Maximizes talent, always seems to do more with less
Not really true. They do less with less, most of the time.

- Recruits to a school with high academic standards
Who cares? Michigan recruits better; not clear if he has what it takes to bring in the next level of stars.

- Is on the AFCA's Ethics Committee
Probably one of the worst reasons to ever hire a coach. I think he's also on the "EA sports" concussion squad.

- Seems flexible when it comes to QB style - pocket passer (Siemian), primarially a runner (Kolter), dual-threat (Persa)
Flexible in being mediocre is not a good quality.

Cons

- Might be hard to pry him away from his alma mater
  This is a pro.

- Hasn't actually won anything (i.e. a division or conference title) other than a few bowl games
  Kind of a big problem.

- Some people aren't fans of his sideline antics. I don't really care; I'll take someone who might look like a bit of a prick over Hoke and his dazed and confused sideline demeanor.
Want a mediocre prick? Here's your guy.

The thing I hated about the RR hire was that he grew up in WV, played for WV and coached at WV.  WV came within a game of winning the NC.  There was nothing he couldn't do there.   I get the more money thing and bigger opportunities thing, but the Michigan Man thing is more about loyalty than about actually having a connection to Michigan.  I'd like Fitzgerald as a coach right up until he leaves NU.  Then he is a sell-out.   There is a such thing as a career coach like Beilein who started at some small school and worked his way up.  That guy works. Saban is another example of that type of coach.  Pete Carroll to a certain exent.  Let the Okie State guy stay at OSU and let Fitz stay at NU.  They are what makes college football cool.  My school can beat your school.

A couple of years ago, it seemed like he would be a big time get for somebody. Now, I'm not as impressed. It's great that he's raised the expectations for NW, but at some point you have to meet them.

Fitzgerald isn't coming to Michigan, but how can anyone say he isn't a great coach?  He is at [bleeping] Northwestern and has them competitive every year.  Maybe those who think he isn't a great coach haven't been following football long enough to remember when so many people were suggesting that the Big Ten kick Northwestern out of the conference.

Fitzgerald would probably be 4-1 with this team right now.

He's a defensive coach who's never had a good defense, and an approximation of his offensive system was recently run out of town in RR.  I think he gets a lot of credit for keeping NW competitive most years, but if Michigan is pulling a .500-ish coach from NW then UM is in huge trouble.

The ONLY way Pat will leave NU is if they fire him. He is not interested in coaching anywhere but at his alma mater. He loves Northwestern. If they did fire him then it's kind of obvious that we would not be interested at that point.

he would be a good hire but not the homerun we need. We are at a point where we cant screw up another hire or else we will end up like tennessee or washington. Now maybe after Llyod had retired i would have greatly considered this

Fitzgerald is the only living college coach I have had personal dealings with. First, I would be absolutely shocked if he left NU under any circumstances other than firing. I'm not in his head so I'm not saying never but AFAIK he would never leave Evanston. FWIW Fitz has been the total opposite of a prick in any interaction I have ever had with him. In fact, he really went out of his way to be kind to me and see that my issues were taken care of when he absolutely didn't have to. I can't explain his filmed sideline antics but on the practice field, in the weight room, and in the halls of McGaw/Welsh-Ryan he has impressed me as a class act to everyone.

I don't know if he would be well suited for an environment like Michigan (where you win or perish), but I do like this coach a lot. He is respectful, passionite, and expects his athletes to be leaders off the field. While he has exceeded the expectations of Northwestern, fans here likely won't be as patient.
