CC: Niners Eliminated from Playoff Contention

Submitted by LS And Play on

I know this might fit into the NFL thread from earlier, but I thought it might warrant its own. Does this change the timeline at all? Is everything still in a holding pattern until after December 28th?

If Harbaugh quits because nothing more can happen at SF. Harbaugh is gone; where is the question. Harbaugh would make more at Michigan so financially it makes sense. Any pro team will have to trade draft picks and he will cost a lot so this would impact building the team.

I agree that nothing will change publicly, but behind the scenes there will be action and we will have a better idea.

Up to this point I think Harbaugh didn't really know himself whether or not he'd come back to Michigan. But with his team out of the playoffs now, it's much more likely that he gives Hackett a much stronger answer than "I don't know".

So....if there continues to be no real news publicly then it's very likely that he's coming. If he wants to stay in the NFL, it's likely that he'll let us know in private and we'll see Hackett moving on to other choices as soon as this week.

For the next two weeks, Harbaugh's mindshare can be filled with something other than figuring out how to get his current team into the playoffs. That void will predominantly be filled by Michigan, since no one can present him with any certain options in the NFL until the season is over without tampering. He can "wonder" what might await him with the Raiders or Jets, but he will know for sure what awaits him in A2.

If they waited out and try to go for a trade, then they are taking a significant risk if he indeed intends to go to Michigan. If that ends up being the case, then Michigan doesn't have to offer anything for him at all and they get nothing. Because they don't know what he's thinking right now, they are at a major disadvantage. Given what seems to be playing out, and they have to be seeing this, the safest bet for them right now would be to talk to Michigan and try to get something in return in cash

One interesting stat from the San Francisco-Seattle game, if anyone is interested, is that the 49ers only managed to get in 51 plays from scrimmage, which is egregiously low really. Spread across 245 yards, it's about 4.8 yards per play, although it is skewed towards rushing - 140 yards on 32 attempts, or 4.38 yards per rush. Seattle managed 67 plays from scrimmage and that is despite one INT on their part.

This really is like, the perfect storm of circumstances leading us to hire a potentially great fit of a coach for the first time in half a century.  If he goes elsewhere I may just say fuck it all and never shower or shave again.

The crazy want of harbaugh has gone up exponentially since we have fired hoke. Before hoke was fired people were thinking "oh harbaugh would be nice", now people are thinking "Harbaugh or death!".

U of M should offer the 49's the amount of money remaining on his contract for THIS year in exchange for immediate termination? Why wait, dump him now niners and save a few bucks, though onlt 2 weeks worth?

You can tell the sports casters don't pay any attention to college.  Any mention of Michigan was an afterthought.  They seemed convinced he's getting traded to Oakland.

5 Year 25,000,000.00

He has 5,000,000.00 next year left on contract. I would imagine the contract is like all the others.

A buyout if he leaves - I don't picture this still two weeks of football left in the season. Niners might be out of the playoffs, but his season isn't over barring something happening.

Firing - They owe the balance of the contract - I don't picture this either. Niners will work out some kind of a monetary deal.

Would someone mind running down the contractual and potential trade issues that will influence this? Like, if Harbaugh resigns, does he owe the Niners money? Is the team able to trade him without his consent, etc? Apologies if it's been posted, but the events today have me wanting to examine the issues closely.

If expressing my opinion albeit an unpopular one makes me a jerk than I'm all for it. It's not the first time nor will it be the last time that I will be called a jerk. Hell sometimes It gives me motivation to go to work to protect your right to do so.
