CC: Mainstream Sports Media "Reporting" of Its Happening Accelerating--Over/Under on Board Meltdown?

Submitted by LKLIII on
More media outlets are using the Bleacher Report article as a jumping off point. So far I don't see any independent confirmations but rather they cite BR and out their own spin on it. Case in point: Big Ten Network has it on their front page: http://btn.com/2014/12/27/report-jim-harbaugh-to-be-named-next-michigan… Doesn't make the report true, and normally we don't cite BR as any kind of authority, but as the push to get clicks continues, this process will accelerate and bigger news outlets will task resources to get independent confirmation on this. As more outlets do, the board will get more traffic. What are people's predictions on the Over/Under on the hour & day that the website melts down? Mine is 10am EST tomorrow. EDIT: I put in paragraphs and attempted spelling fixes. Posting via phone isn't easy. Not allowing paragraphs to show up.

I love that BR cites "sources," who are probably tweets (or even Brian's prediction on mgoblog itself) and then they are cited as a reliable "source" that its happening.

This coaching search has forever changed the way I view reporting in the media.

Agreed. Definitely a food chain element to this media reporting. They let the smaller blogs float up the rumors, the bigger blogs sift through the rumors to do more actual investigative reporting, then the first mainstream news outlet (or first blog officially owned or affiliated with a mainstream news company) gets credit for "breaking" the story. Kinda bogus. At any rate, there will be a tipping point at which this Board will melt down. My guess is tomorrow morning as the mainstream sports outlets set the talking points agenda for the NFL pregame shows.

"Reporting" in 2014:

A. Copy without attribution what some other media outlet is quoting from an anonymous and unverified "source."

and/or

B. Pull purely speculative stuff out of the anal region and describe it as "insider information."

Repeat as necessary.

This is a good point. Media can get two stories for the price of one. "Harbaugh Leaves 49ers for Michigan" versus "Harbaugh and 49ers Part" and "Harbaugh to Michigan" The only thing that prevents milking the story like that is competition of other media outlets to get the scoop. I'm assuming once the dam breaks then the entire story spills out pretty quickly. Or at least I'm HOPING the other shoe drops quickly. Otherwise it'll be a bumpy ride the last 24-72 hours.

When Brian showed us what the site servers work on I was doubtful it would stand up to the pounding of traffic but I am pretty close to starting a Server Hamster Appreciation thread.  Very few 503 errors at all these past few weeks.  Of course one more test to go...

I don't know to the extent it will be one of the primary subjects discussed during the pregame shows by the talking heads, but it will certainly come up. Will Cris Carter, Ian Rapoport, et al, continue to be trolls? Count on it.

One interesting perspective may be Jimmy Johnson's. His is the one opinion probably worth hearing. The rest are nothing more than oxygen thieves.

I put the muppet extravangza and 501 Docker circus to hit around 9am Monday with a mini strike Sunday night beginning around 8pm. By 10am Monday the hamster carnage will look to be Armageddon-ish.

Sometime around Friday 4am a limited amount of hamsters will have been introduced and running at partial speed. Full speed will not be realized until about 2 weeks after NLOI day.

It was fun while it lasted, everyone enjoy the involuntary break from Harbaugh rumors and give your F5/command R a break.

I'd pay $100 for Harbaugh to stride up to the podium at his first press conference, clear his throat, smile and say....

"It happened".

It has been interesting with all of the Harbaugh chat, rumors and sources of sources. Hoping it finally comes to an end tomorrow or sooner.

It was nice chatting on Mgoblog for the last few weeks. Total meltdown by 10:00 pm tomorrow night. Game is 4:25 I figure it will be a couple of hours after the final game when Jim shows up to the final presser wearing "M" Logo Hat. Can only hope it happens.

I'm going with a bit later on Monday. There will be no news all day and the increasing tension on the board will finally result in a massive hamster die-off at 4:00 in the afternoon.
