Can we do a Kickstarter for the MGoApp?

Submitted by MGoOhNo on

Because I'll donate, I'm using the website about 2% as much as I used to use the app, its still not optimal, and clicks = money to help generate free content, so should be a no brainer...?!  So I'll just go ahead and make the ask for Brian - $30 for 1 HTTV book, but no signature (because, really, a blog dude signature - get over oneself, and he should be too busy generating free content in any event) but a useful MGoApp!!!

yes!!!!  Could not agree more.

I used the app to check Mgo 13 time a day.  I'm here only once or twice a day now.

Count me in for the kickstarter.

I've suggested they use the extra money from the HTTV kickstarter to reboot the app . . .

I would have to imagine that if traffic is slowing down, then the powers that be have taken note and will be working on a plan of action.  Personally, my visits to the site have decreased substantially to maybe three or four times a day.  At the office I find myself visiting the new website far less often than I visited the old one, and at home at night I don't even check the website, whereas I would check the app several times per evening.  Maybe it will just take some time, but this has to be costing them ad revenues.

Exactly the same here.  I sent Seth an email telling him I was basically transitioning from active poster to lurker cause the new site just wasnt very much fun anymore.   Like you my site traffic has crashed from virtually constant at work and sometimes at home to sometimes at work and never at home.

The new site may be awesome for MgoManagement but it definitely sucks balls for the great unwashed like us.  And it's killing the side board traffic and posts.

I was wondering how long it would take for this thread. I check the website about 3 times a week. I can’t stand looking at browsers on my phone and I’m never at a computer unless I’m doing actual work. At least the app was an easy way to read and participate. This is just... painful.

They’ve said numerous times there will be no app because the site is mobile optimized. Obviously a third party could try to make one, but all I’m saying is none of the MGoblog staff will be working on it.

Only for a given definition of "mobile optimized".

Personally, I'm still seeing graphs/videos spilling over the right hand side of the front page. I'm seeing comments - usually single word - where each letter is stacked, and it overlaps with the title/date/username.

I'm seeing links that don't work, information that only shows up if you turn your screen sideways, a page that shows more ads than content, an inability to resize...

I'm seeing enough white space that I've started to use MGoBlog instead of my phone's flashlight.

I haven't been an IT PM for quite some time, but this was not a successful launch. If any sort of usability enhancement is a year away, I might cry. This blog is my last refuge on the internet.

I don't believe the reluctance to put out an app is a money thing so I doubt this will help.  They already know many people want an app and have commented on it.  But honestly, they should probably fix the bigger issues with the site first.  Why would you want an app when the site's not even where it should be yet?

I do check the site less often than I did with the App, though that might just be off season reasons. The mobile site is pretty good though I think slower overall performance than the Android App. Personally I think it would be essentially the same if the diaries and board were accessible with a single click without the stickies if there's a way to make the flow closer to the app on the mobile site I'd be fine with it. Overall mostly satisfied with an MgoBlog website shortcut in place of the app on my homescreen.

I think the new site was supposed to be formatted for mobile, so no need for an app. The site actually looks better (IMO) on Chrome on my iphone 8 than it does on my pc (too much white space). It's kind of annoying that I have to take 3 clicks on mobile to get to the board, but no loading = quick response time.

I'd be down for donating to an app also but frankly if the new site performs better come game day threads then I'll be fine. Now can we get back to more recruiting and Chris Webber? Never heard Sam Webb so excited on the radio

one of the issues they mentioned about the hd app and why it was discontinued was due to the continuous querying of the site created a traffic issue.  i've never developed an app so i have no idea what i'm talking about but if they can figure out how to monetize the app's ad space properly and make sure it doesn't crash the main site then it is probably doable.

I think it's because each instance of the app (yours, mine, mine on my burner phone, etc) would constantly ping the MGoServers for content updates instead of loading when the user accessed the app. This created a ton of unnecessary traffic. I don't know about app programming, but it seems like something that *should* be programmable.

I am fairly certain that it is - we have apps that we've developed in-house for work that ping servers at predetermined intervals, such as every hour. Now, how many of those are successful, of course, is another matter, but it seems like anything that has to access a substantial database is going to kill response time generally if it is constantly looking for updated information.

The other problem that I had - especially when modding - is that what happened in one interface was not happening in another. Anything that I deleted within threads on my laptop remained in the app, caved users could still post on mobile, etc...so there were numerous disconnects.

While I’d definitely contribute to something like this, I’m doubting money is the issue. So I’m not sure how much a Kickstarter would do.

But if Brian gives the okay, then sign me up.

I'm in. I'd easily pay 15 bucks for the app alone. This is the first time I logged in and commented since the reboot. Just not as practical without the app. It was easily top 5 apps I used.

I assume an app will be made, but it wasn't prioritized with the site re-write and so I doubt it'll be done before the season starts.  I do wonder how much additional work would need to be done to retrofit the existing apps with whatever new API endpoints they are using to drive data with this site.  I guess those could have been sunseted with upgrade in Drupal, but most good tech shops I know (and HE seems like one of them) would keep those around.

New website sucks. Losing my sight from all the white space and getting arthritic from all the extra scrolling and clicking. Please give us an app.
