Can michigan schedule individual games with other teams?

Submitted by blizzardo on August 10th, 2020 at 12:49 PM

I assume they wont based on them not voting to have a big ten season. But if the SEC and other leagues are still going forward, this could really hurt the big time programs, psu, osu, mich, etc.

Does michigan have the authority to schedule individual games againt other teams if they wanted?

Michigan is a founding member of the Big 10 they're going to go along with the conference.  In any event, no one is going to co-sign scheduling a game in this environment and be held liable.

To put it slightly more factually........that was the President of the University who voted for the season cancellation. If he voted for the cancellation of the season, there isn't any reason to expect he would vote for individual games.  This wasn't the commissioner's call, it was the vote of the Presidents/Chancellors and ours (along with every President except Iowa and Nebraska) voted to cancel the fall season.

In fairness to the University administrators it's extremely probable they consulted with their schools of medicine of which Michigan is a world leader.  What those doctors told the administrators is likely the basis of their decision.  That, along with significant potential legal liabilities, probably sealed the fate of the 2020 season.

Pretty sure the president with a background in immunology isn't going to change his mind barring the creation of a vaccine. The only question remaining is whether the SEC and ACC try it in the fall or join everyone else in playing in the spring.

It won't happen. Too many head winds; U of M President, AD then there's the B1G Commish won't permit it. If true, the Buckeyes would be scheduling games pronto.

I'd love to see the SEC go forward with their schedule just to put a thumb in the eye in the other conferences.

Sure the AD stands alone from the university as a financial monolith.  But Schlissel is still Warde's boss.  And I thought that, by now, we all would have realized that Warde isn't going to buck the status quo.  There is no chance in hell that Warde Manual will allow Harbaugh to schedule a game against Schlissel's vote, let alone have the political power and wherewithal to pull it off.  And Harbaugh won't do it, either.

A more interesting question is what happens if Nebraska or Iowa try to schedule games?

Would the conference give them permission? That would open the way for other teams even though they voted to cancel.

There could still be Big Ten football in the Spring. Would any school risk being left out to try to play this Fall?

It's FAR more likely that those other leagues will cancel their seasons coming up; nobody wants to be the first but nobody wants to be the last either, and if 2/5 of the P5 says "no go" I don't think the presidents of these schools want to deal with the fallout of sick and possibly dying players.

How about this for some Mr. Brightside........

The next time we face Ohio State (whether its spring or fall 2021) they'll be breaking in a new QB as well since Fields will not play in spring as he preps for draft and will be gone by fall. There are probably several other Buckeyes in the same boat. We probably have maybe two or three guys making that decision (Mayfield? Nico. Kwity?)

At least we can still watch the ACC, SEC, and Big 12. Better than watching Michigan go 7-3 this year and getting our shit pushed in by Ohio State for the 9th year in a row.

Assuming M wanted to play (they don't), the B1G still owns the TV rights so why would M play in order to give 93% of the revenue to someone else who will cover 0% of the cost?

I think that, if you vote to cancel the season, that pretty much covers it.

It would be interesting to see a hodgepodge of games one of these seasons, but I think you have to be a Notre Dame to do that and no one wants to stoop so low as to be Notre Dame.
