The call on RR is so close, it all boils down to this bowl game.

Submitted by Wolverine90 on

In a season full of daggers, the score, not the loss, of the  OSU game was a plus size dagger to RichRod.

The entire year pundits and hacks like myself predicted steady improvement, and 7-5, with 8-4 an possibility.  But also was expected improvement on both sides of the ball, and many, including myself, predicted that RR’s career may very well rest in the hands of GERG after the debacle that was last year’s D.  GERG didn’t disappoint, generating an even worse D, injuries aside.

But for all the doom/gloom on D, the shining light was Denard, and the vast improvement on offense.

Then the OSU game, and 7 points….

Yr 1 of the RR tenure didn’t count given the lack of remotely adequate personnel on offense.  But the complexion after that loss to OSU was that in the last 2 years, RR has merely treaded water, improving on O but regressing on D.  UM went from 5-7 to 7-5, which is positive, but the offense, the only unit fans could hang their hat on for vast improvement, then goes out and only hangs 7 points vs OSU – a giant negative.

So now everyone wonders if RR will be back next year and it appears to be a 50/50 shot because, as bad as things have been, things will be better next year under RR.  Healthier D with far more focus on that side of the ball, including a new D coordinator, experienced O, some semblance of special teams with new kickers.

8-4 or 9-3 are expected next year under RR, unless Mike Martin goes pro and the new D coordinator turns into another bust.  85% chance the team is better next year, but long term, RR has amassed a record the last two years indicting his capacity prepare a Michigan team to compete at elite levels.

So Brandon’s margin to keep RR either way is razor thin either way.

What will be the deciding factor?  The score of this Gator Bowl.  I honestly think it completely comes down to this game.  So what do you guys think the score needs to be to keep RR next year?

Yes Miss State is an SEC team, and I know recruit rankings don’ t mean all that much (hello Boise State), but Miss State’s Rivals recruiting rankings last several years are as follows:

2010 38

2009 25

2008 44

2007 39

2006 46

Essentially Miss State has recruited an average of roughly 20+ ranks below UM which would imply UM has the superior personnel.  This factors against RR if we lose.  Then again, we’ve had devastating injuries, which factors in his favor for next year. Then again several of his recruits have been monstrous busts (Turner, Campbell, Emilien, Cissoco, McGuffy, etc., etc.) which factors against him…

I believe that Brandon would’ve stuck to his plan to make a decision after the bowl game even if UM was 11-1, where it was a foregone conclusion RR would be back, but adding everything up, the call appears so close, that I strongly believe this Gator Bowl in two days will mark the course of our program next year, and possibly for years to come given the high likelihood that if RR is back next year, UM will be markedly better.

There are tons of other factors in Brandon's decision – his personal thoughts on RR, thoughts on recruiting, thoughts on Harbaugh, thoughts on the violations, the direction of the program, etc., etc.  I’m not trying to oversimplify Brandon’s decision, I believe that if you add up all the pros and cons, it is an extremely close call for Brandon.

So for fun, what score do you think will swing Brandon either way?  I believe any win, even by 1 point saves RR’s job.  8-5 after 5-7, especially with this defense, is worthy of his return.   I believe a loss of a touchdown or less puts RR square on the fence.  I believe a loss over 8 points or more, and he is gone.

I’ve stuck it out with RR for 3 years and have rooted so much for him to succeed, that honestly nothing would make me happier than to see him back next year for one last shot to finally break through.  He’s had a month to prepare his team, and it is time now boys.  GO BLUE!!!!

One game will not be a deciding factor for DB.  I'm sure he has been evaluating RR since he was hired as AD.  I'm sure there will be a lot of factors going into his decision.  I think he will announce his decision about the HC before January 10th!

At any rate, I hope the team plays well and I will be rooting for them all the way!  I'm looking forward to watching the gator bowl.  I bet that DROB has a great game! Even with all the CC posts, I'm still excited to see us back in a bowl game, especially on New Years Day!

Right because a game against a middle of a pack SEC Team.  RR gains nothing from beating it, it's akin to beating a middle of the back B10 team.  If he loses to them it makes him look bad.  Winning the bowl does nothing to undo the losses to tOSU and Wiscy.  Losing rubs salt into those open wounds.

If DB is looking at this bowl to help him make a decision, I'm unhappy.  Refusing to make his mind and lay the groundwork one way or another means it will take that much longer to get stability in the program.  Either we're suddenly giving RR a vote of confidence (and maybe an extension) come the first week or Jan or we're suddenly trying to get Harbaugh on the phone and get something on paper.  Either way it looks half assed and hurried.

When next week comes I just want this to go smoothly.  Immediate and focused public support of RR or RR out and JH in within a 48 hour window.  No more twisting in the wind.

Posts like this have caused me to make a conscious effort to cool the criticism of where the program is under Rich.  There are a lot of people on here that have a serious emotional investment in him getting that 4th year and believe deeply in him.

That level of loyalty and optimism is very admirable. This just isn't the proper venue to start things with people that care as much as Wolverine90.  No sarcasm here either.

To give the Rich supporters more hope, I found this:  http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/12/30/jim-harbaugh-to-49ers-speculation-heats-up/

Apparently the Niners are moving very fast on the reorganization of their front office and installing a guy as GM that favors hiring Harbaugh AND that new GM will happen to be in Miami this weekend with Mr. York to meet with Bill Parcells for advice.  Harbaugh is down there right now with the Cardinal.

The theory is that the conclusion the organization must have is Jim as coach and they  are moving the pieces to make that happen.

Rich Rod loyalists: Who loves ya baby?!

and i have been negging the hell out of you for being so one-sided.

I give you props for trying to be a least a little even-handed despite your feelings about the state of Michigan football under Coach Rodriguez. There are so many on here (in both camps) that are so unbearable to even read.

I am in the pro Rodriguez camp. I think continuity in coaching is very important. I think the program will be fine under Coach Rodriguez going forward.  I think it will be a huge mistake to keep making changes and if JH does come here...i have little doubt he will leave in a short time for the NFL. I am not at all convinced he is the God of coaching so many make him out to be. A good coach yes....but his record is not better than Coach Rods in many ways.

Keeping Rodriguez means stability in scheme.....recruiting....etc.

The team will be better next year. Our time of dominance in the league will return.

Just my 2 cents.

CBS Sports writer Dennis Dodd claims that Brandon is just "drooling" over the prospect of hiring Harbaugh.  http://bit.ly/gdDmpE

Has anyone ever really gotten the sense that Brandon is so hell bent about hiring Harbaugh?  I certainly haven't.  I'm exhausted by some of these writers.
