I can now safely say I have absolutely NO idea what goes into the thinking of college basketball recruits anymore when selecting, then deselecting then selecting again.  Shoes?  Chicks?  Money?  Coaches?  Something else?

The NBA draft lottery seems more predictable.

is one of the most bizarre outcomes of a recruiting saga that I can ever remember.  Purdue?  They are perpetual underacheivers with a modest basketball pedigree and a coach who seems to be perpetually on the hot seat.  If they were coming off an unlikely run deep into the tournament I guess I could see it. He was committed to State, coming off a Final Four run and poised to put together a remarkable class and he decommits and goes to, Purdue?

I guess this makes them a player in the conference short term but for the life of me I cannot figure this one out.

Just curious how old you are?  I can understand people under the age of 30 thinking Purdue is an also ran with a modest pedigree but in terms of Big 10 basketball they actually have 1 of the best pedigrees out there.  It is just not in the past 10 years.  They were very good annually with Keady for a long time.

Indiana has 21 Big 10 titles.

Purdue has 22.

And yes some of those were in the 30s, 40s etc but still - it's #1 in the Big 10.  More recently - 79, 84, 87, 88, 94, 95, 96.  I think UM went from 86 to 2012 without a single one so yes they have pedigree.  Just not to the typical 21 year old.

Specific to Swanigan he is going to be a 4 in the NBA if he gets there and MSU has Marvin Clark and Davis at the 4 as competition so they would be playing him more as an undersized 5.  At Purdue there are twin towers at 5 and their front court immediately becomes more problematic.  It's a good get for the conference and makes Purdue a tough tough game.  I don't see Swanigan as a 1 and done - he looks like a typical guy that will be around 3 years due to size concerns at the NBA level.

I'd like to petition the board to never reference "crystal ballz" again, they're worthless.

Unless we're talking about a genetic condition, in which case absolutely lets talk about it because that would be amazing.

Hey cool! I hold a small place in my heart for Purdue because my cousins boyfriend played there about 2-3 years back. He transferred to DePaul and is now in a Croatian Basketball League. He actually ripped UM's big men in the first half at Crisler Center 2-3 years back. Look him up if you like: Sandi Marcius.

And while I'm glad to have another 5 star in the B1G, it would have been fun to watch and root for Cal next year with him on their team. So I'm guessing he is going to start at PF while that 7'1" guy plays C? Purdue will not be a gimme next year...

Better there than MSU. Tons of pressure on Matt Painter to win big now. A lot of people thought he was going to be fired, then they did well last season. Let's see if he can keep it up.

Caleb Swanigan is a Top 10 kid with talent that can be developed into NBA talent. Swanigan more than likely considered izzo's NBA draft record since the 1996 draft:

15-total players drafted
8-1st round picks
7-2nd round picks
1-Lottery Pick (2001)
NO 1st Round Picks between 2007-2013
Only two 2nd Round Picks between 2007-2013 (Suton and Green)
Only 3 picks since 2010 (Green 2nd Round, 2012; Payne and Harris 1st Round, 2014)

So, again, WHY would a kid with a scintilla of NBA talent go near izzo? After all, Purdue has had the same number of kids drafted since 2010 as msu: 3.
Good call Caleb!

Numbers to keep in mind:

Since 2010, msu AND Purdue have produced 3 NBA Draft picks each ;
Since 2007, msu AND Purdue have produced 4 NBA Draft picks each.

So yeah, it's the same. Caleb Swanigan was smart in staying away from msu. Not like Purdue is a powerhouse, but he is their best recruit in two decades. Matt Painter will be smart enough to feature him and allow him to develop as a lure for other big time recruits. At msu, he would more than likely take the "Brendan Dawson/Derrick Nix/Raymar Morgan" path to a career overseas. Or if he really got lucky, the prized "msu 2nd round" spot.
