Branden Dawson punches Purdue's Travis Carroll?

Submitted by wresler120 on

It appeared as if Branden Dawson threw a sucker punch at Travis Carroll during the MSU/Purdue game, and the incident is under review by the B1G conference. Michigan State has released a statement saying they have reviewed the play, and they have concluded no punch was thrown ... case closed. But is it? You be the judge. It looks like a punch from the angle provided, but the video quality is poor.

If The_Unknown aka MrMario isn't banned for good after this then I will lose all hope in humanity. Just wow. How was he allowed back on here? It's too bad BiSB left the mod team.

Ignorant much? Now that the conference has reviewed thge videos, plural, you are truly an embarrassment, as are 85% of the other comments here as well. Amazing and ironic that people here talking about State and Dawson's lack of class need to take a long, hard look in the mirror, if any introspective skills exist, that is.

There never was a punch, as even common sense made clear from the moment "it" happened. But I know, it's too fun to attack stupidly and blindly, isn't it. How many here accused Dawson of something he never did again?

If it were State fans and the other way around, I'd criticize them, too, and have at times in the past, of course. I guess I just don't feel the need to hide behind being a Michigan fan to act like a complete jerk like so many here do. Not all, of course, but most.

Wow, can I stop by and now show you what a real punch is, since you're obviously pretty clueless on what one is? You know, like the one that Dawson didn't throw, as a separate video angle conclusively proved to the B1G conference already. But thanks for showing all of us again what an idiot and judgmental clown one can look like when seeing things through a team's blinders.

Looking forward to your apology, right?

That's a punch, and shame on MsU for trying to brush it under the rug like nothing happened. I get that athletes get pissed and do stupid things from time to time but I would be furious if one of our players did something unsportsmanlike and was not punished.

I don't recall that. I DVRed the game and fast forwarded through everything up to the kickoff. I would hope he got reprimanded by the coaching staff, and with our coaching staff I think it's safe to assume that they dealt with it accordingly. Maybe it wasn't public, but we certainly wouldn't put out a press release saying Hayes was just trying to give the other player a high five or some others bs.

Credit, justice Hayes did not play in the Ohio game but clearly swung at an osu player as Michigan was running onto the field, the pregame cameras caught it. I'm sure Hoke did something about it but according to my eyes, Justice clearly swung and sort of connected on a Buckeye, wish someone had the video...either way like someone mentioned, it's not like we wouldn't hold him accountable. Edit: actually I just looked at Justice Hayes supposed punch, it clearly wasn't as bad as I initially thought...it was not a fist towards the Ohio guy, it was palm open, more of a smack in the direction of the Ohio player, it appears as if he connected, but far from a punch in my book. I'm sure hoke took care of it, probably not deserving of a suspension.

I think that's why even though people were saying "why isn't Hayes in there?" In the open game thread he never sniffed the field. FWIW I don't think the Dawson thing is a big deal either. If the B1G can see he threw it he should be suspended, but I don't think it makes him a dirty player or anything. Just a kid caught up in the heat of the moment who might need to be punished. It wasn't a neck twist. I just find the denial funny. You didn't have Michigan issuing a statement saying "Justice Hayes didn't hit anybody."

Can we all expect a big public apology now from you since you very publicly accused Dawson of something he never did? I mean, the B1G already reviewed the alleged incident and announced that there will be no penalties at all. You know, confirming the obvious fact that there was never a punch in the first place...

Make sure the apology is to MSU, too. You accused them of a coverup, right? How about you face the facts; you were 100% wrong in accusing a kid of something he never did. You accused a university and athletic department of a cover up. You assumed that there was a punch despite considerable evidence to the contrary, simply because you wanted to get in a dig at MSU.

Some people are able to root for a team without the lack of class shown here by you and so many others in this case. If people want to use the term Michigan Man, try living up to it and not assuming next time simply because you hate MSU?

Perhaps because it wasn't even close to a punch, you moron! You know, as the B1G already confirmed after being much smarter than you and not just assuming, but waiting to look at other angles... You know, like anybody with an IQ over about 85 would have done. Oh, I'm sorry...

It's possible to hate a rival like MSU without being complete morons, as 85% of the people here have shown to be regarding this incident. Don't dare to call other teams and fans classless after what we've seen right here on this site. Accusing a kid of something he never did, accusing MSU of a cover up, and for what? To make most people here look like judgmental jerks who aren't even rational enough to wait until other replays are seen? Or to think for a moment, Hmm... If Dawson had punched Carroll, I wonder why Carroll never grimaced, moved, etc...

C'mon people, we should be better than this...

According to my Sparty sources, it is not a punch. MSU has access to other angles of video. According to them, Dawson actually is beating his own chest.

It is from Sparties, I know. But it makes sense.

IF it was a punch, wouldn't Carroll actually react to it? Like, be hurt, or at least flinch, etc. Also, there was no foul call. A punch is a guaranteed foul. Even if the refs missed it, don't you think Carroll and Purdue's bench would be freaking out over the missed call?

I know this video looks incriminating, but I actually will give them the benefit of the doubt this time.

Well from the video, it appears that he does flinch and attempt to block it.  Also, look at the top of his left shoulder.  It looks to me as though the sudden movement is the result of an impact.  He also looks over to the ref afterwards and points.    Nevertheless, if MSU has other video, I'll trust them I guess.

There isn't time for Carroll to react.  It cuts it off like 1 sec after the punch.  It looks like he is looking at the ref about to say "what the hell?", but the video stops.  I'm not saying it was definitely a punch, but it looked like one, and from that video its hard to tell what Carroll's reaction was at all.

Keep in mind, post players get hit a lot while they're fighting for position (they catch a lot of stray elbows and such), so it wouldn't be a total shock to Carroll's system to get hit in the midsection.  That's probably why you don't see much of a reaction.

I doubt Dawson was beating his chest.  It definitely doesn't look like that in the slo-mo view.  Maybe he was punching the air in celebration, but his little faceoff with Carroll at the end suggests otherwise.

Yeah, I remember all your posts here when Stauskas was yelling smack at the WVU bench. Oh, that's right, he's a Michigan player, so it didn't mean anything then, did it? Hypocrite much? So the best you can do after the bogus accusation is now that Dawson is classless for celebrating a bucket by a teammate? Really?

Again, don't call OSU or MSU and their teams and fans classless if 90% of you here are just as bad, if not worse.

It looks like a punch at first, but I can see it as him beating his own chest too after taking another look. Other angles of the replay should be able to tell one way or the other. Doesn't help their case that they stared him down right after doing it, though.

He turns his hole body behind the swing, extends his elbow fully straight, not in a circle motion like a chest beat, then turns in the Purdue player's face, who looks shocked and points at him looking at the ref. Video can lie, but until they produce more video this is all we have to go on.

Definitely a punch? Care to come back and admit you were 100% wrong? Seriously, what part of it always being a good idea of looking at different camera angles before making a judgment didn't make it to this blog?

I'll help you out; it definitely was NOT a punch and you definitely should be more careful in assuming things. Oh, that's right, it was by a State player, so it's then always okay for any type of accusation, correct? And I'm sure you're not a hypocrite and always criticize pathetic behavior. So I'm sure you immediately came here after the WVU game when Stauskas was talking smack to the WVU bench and got a T.

What's that, you didn't even comment on that? Oh, you're a Michigan fan alright, just the worst kind. Arrogant, clueless and beyond subjective. Luckily, not all Michigan fans are like you.

I can see you're obviously passionate about this situation and thread, but there's no reason to make it personal with other posters. Criticize the posts all you want, criticize the posting habits of MaizeAndBlueWahoo or Eve_of_TheRivalry and whoever else you've replied to, but leave the name calling elsewhere.

He's obviously an MSU troll pretending to be a Michigan fan. It's not like he's seen any other "angles". And the Big Ten not enforcing something means nothing. It's the same League that suspended Gholston for a punch but did nothing for the neck twist.
