A pretty bad performance. But week three is EXACTLY when really good teams put in a lack luster performance.
September 16th, 2023 at 11:23 PM ^
Like Georgia, Alabama, Florida State...
On the one hand, some bad performances really are warning signs.
But others are not. Michigan has had some weak performances in each of the last two years that meant absolutely nothing.
September 17th, 2023 at 9:46 AM ^
The diff between UM and those 3 was UM was at home. They were not.
September 17th, 2023 at 1:35 PM ^
Georgia was at home, and was down by two scores at half.
September 17th, 2023 at 6:43 AM ^
True to to an extent.
I know the clock rules play into this, but only running 43 plays is more than a bit underwhelming.
It blew my mind last year when Indiana stayed with UM for a couple quarters but insisted on snapping the ball with 30 seconds to go on the playclock.
When you’re the better team, more plays=advantageous. When you’re not, fewer plays=advantageous.
Tonight was a light show accompanied by a preseason game. If we see 43 plays in B1G play, I’ll be much more critical of the coaching. But fewer plays is going to hurt Michigan this year more than it’ll help.
September 17th, 2023 at 12:16 PM ^
We'll find out next week. Rutgers is a good test. They have a good DL that plays the run well. Our run game will be tested. If it stops working, the JJ must show that yesterday's game was a fluke.
September 16th, 2023 at 10:47 PM ^
Mike Hart is a better head coach than Sherrone Moore.
September 16th, 2023 at 10:47 PM ^
Sherrone Moore flunked
September 16th, 2023 at 11:30 PM ^
You’re blaming him for 3 picks and a ST fumble (and another fumble by JJ that was fortunately blown dead)?
September 16th, 2023 at 11:45 PM ^
Yes. Head coach gets the blame. He also gets the praise. Tonight was bad. We only one because we have superior athletes. Our effort was worse than BGSU.
September 17th, 2023 at 12:09 AM ^
What if we two?
September 17th, 2023 at 12:12 AM ^
Is that a threet?
September 17th, 2023 at 11:50 AM ^
Four what reason would I do that?
September 17th, 2023 at 6:44 AM ^
I almost never put stock into anything that goes on in coach interviews or press conferences, but during that halftime interview as the teams were heading into the tunnel it sure seemed like Moore was flustered. Everyone's got a plan til they get punched in the mouth. The first drive was great, second drive was going well, but once JJ threw that first pick in the end zone the whole team looked off.
That's where a head coach comes in. Get the team to settle and relax and get back to doing what they do well.
September 17th, 2023 at 9:24 PM ^
Well he’s also the OC so other than the ST fumble, yes
September 17th, 2023 at 1:18 PM ^
Who is this Sherrone Moore person? I didn't see any coaches in the game except the guy in the big orange poncho and the horrendous haircut. Out of about 30 minutes of non-commercial air time, I counted 25 minutes of Scott Loefler prowling the sidelines in his traffic cone muumuu and his SuperCuts buzz. Also, love him as a player, but Jake Butt is butt as a color guy. What a terrible broadcast.
September 17th, 2023 at 6:40 PM ^
I don't think any of the coaches in these first 3 games should get a head coaching job anytime soon
September 16th, 2023 at 10:47 PM ^
Dunno if it was Sherrone or just the team sleepwalking through a game that was supposed to be a laugher, but the whole thing felt off tonight. Felt like we were gonna roll to a rout and then JJ threw the 1st pick and it was just bizarro world after that
September 16th, 2023 at 11:06 PM ^
That sums it up. Either way, this game didn't give Sherrone a good look.
September 16th, 2023 at 11:25 PM ^
I really don't understand what it was that Sherrone Moore was supposed to do tonight. He wasn't the HC for the week of prep. He wasn't the one telling JJ to make the throws that got picked.
These takes rendering judgment on Sherrone, in particular, seem absurd to me.
September 17th, 2023 at 12:07 AM ^
Unless the head coach gets like a magic wand he's supposed to wave at the right times and not at the wrong times, yes, this doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm guessing (and only guessing) that HC's job in this game roughly boils down to decide whether to kick or go for it on 4tth down.
September 17th, 2023 at 12:13 AM ^
Gun it coming off of the line, Sherrone. M-m-my Sherrone.
September 16th, 2023 at 10:48 PM ^
Make no mistake about it, this has been a pretty uninspiring nonconference.
A lot of teams would beat us right now with these types of efforts.
This was a very annoying game.
September 16th, 2023 at 11:10 PM ^
Let's hope that we won't see any more of "these types of efforts". Between the offense and the two muffed punts, this game was closer than it should have been.
We'll need to see a MUCH BETTER effort when Rutgers comes to town next Saturday.
September 17th, 2023 at 2:57 AM ^
Dammit, thanks for pointing out my typo...should have said these types of effort.
September 17th, 2023 at 9:49 AM ^
Two muffed punts…. Maybe that’s why Thaw is the guy. Neither of the muffs were his, right?
September 17th, 2023 at 10:18 AM ^
They were muffed kick returns, not punts.
September 17th, 2023 at 5:11 PM ^
Credit to Scott Loefler for recognizing our up guys (Bredeson, McGregor) are probably not great kick return guys and kicking it shallow. Loefler is a former Michigan QB so he must be pretty intelligent.
September 16th, 2023 at 11:23 PM ^
Agreed. It doesn't feel like these three games really prepared them for anything or developed much. The best two DBs basically didn't play at all, the offense was efficient (but boring) and Harbaugh wasn't even there.
It feels like it's a total unknown if they are actually prepared to play a real game (which I think Rutgers may be).
September 16th, 2023 at 10:49 PM ^
Maybe the team needs to refocus a bit on the week-to-week. It's good to have high expectations, but games like these make things like the Beat Georgia drill look like a distraction. Tonight was a good reminder that any game can be an L if you don't prepare and execute well. Excited to get Harbaugh back and excited to see how this team responds.
September 17th, 2023 at 8:39 AM ^
You were waiting forever to reference the Georgia drill...
September 16th, 2023 at 10:49 PM ^
The silver lining - Moore might not be a lock to leave as a head coach after this season!
September 16th, 2023 at 10:51 PM ^
The coach didn't have the team ready to go. Moore didn't have a great day as the coordinator and coach.
September 16th, 2023 at 11:39 PM ^
Again, what is he supposed to do about three bad-read picks and two (really three) fumbles?
September 17th, 2023 at 6:04 PM ^
When you say "coach" in the first sentence who are you referring to?
Jim Harbaugh was there to coach during the week. So are you blaming Harbaugh for supposedly not having "the team ready to go" against BGSU?
Btw, I thought the team looked ready to play. We were up 7-0 and dominating. We were about to go up 14-0 when Hibner led his defender to the interception.
After that, things got weird.
September 17th, 2023 at 8:55 PM ^
So many excuses
September 16th, 2023 at 10:51 PM ^
Burn the game tape like we were Penix facing MSU's secondary
September 16th, 2023 at 11:46 PM ^
I wonder if there will be a Penix Orji in the playoffs?
September 18th, 2023 at 10:12 AM ^
probably not since Mel Tugger is unlikely to be involved in the CFP
September 16th, 2023 at 10:52 PM ^
Unrelated, but...I have not been around MGoBlog for several months. The numner of thread posts is really low. Where did everyone go?
September 16th, 2023 at 10:56 PM ^
I rarely post anymore. The content is great but the setup of this site is like 2005 style. Threads are not even “bumped” to the top with new posts and that’s one of many things that every forum made after 2005 has done.
Traffic is WAY down.
September 17th, 2023 at 9:51 AM ^
The site takes forever to come up as well.
September 16th, 2023 at 11:20 PM ^
Your cousin GoJ made everyone leave
September 16th, 2023 at 11:48 PM ^
The UX is bad. I also hate how the new comments don't come to the top.
September 16th, 2023 at 11:54 PM ^
I still post here and the content has been better since Michigan started beating OSU (we actually get a UFR for that game) but the "rules" and forum makeup discourages conversation. Posters will gang up on others for the littlest issue. The owner and mods break their own rules (Politics). They have also banned posters who created conversation (WolverineDevotee). I could go on but these are just a few reasons why participation is down.
Discord is a better place to discuss the game in real time.
September 17th, 2023 at 12:09 AM ^
I agree.
September 17th, 2023 at 5:50 PM ^
It’s a sign of the times, unfortunately. There are the approved opinions and the unapproved. Feelings must not be hurt.
September 17th, 2023 at 12:38 PM ^
I have 2 yound kids now. Too hard to be here all the time. Maybe readers are getting old.
September 16th, 2023 at 10:54 PM ^
Need to find a better balance between putting things on film you don’t need to in a blowout win and actually letting your backups play.
And that goes for both sides of the ball. This seemed more a preseason game than anything else.
September 16th, 2023 at 10:56 PM ^
That was a bog-standard 2022 Michigan Game (TM):
Fuck around for an entire half, remember how to play football at halftime, pull away late.
“Dominating an inferior opponent” needs to show up on the scoreboard before Q4.
