Blind Comparison of CFP Teams

Submitted by It'sGreatToBe on

Happy Friday, everyone!

My friend and I are a couple recent MLaw grads who were inspired by the recent discussions about the strength of Michigan's resume compared to other top-10 playoff contenders. We've thrown together a website that allows college football fans to do blind side-by-side resume comparisons among the current top-10 teams. The side-by-side comparisons utilize a variety of data and advanced statistics aimed at presenting a relatively detailed picture of each team's resume. You can then see your personalized ranking of the teams based on your blind selections, as well as broken-out results of who you selected in each head-to-head matchup.

Our hope is that the blind data will provide a (relatively) unbiased picture of how fans view the strength of each of these teams' resumes relative to its peers. If we're able to collect enough information to draw meaningful results, we are going to compile that information into an Elo ranking system and publish that data.

If you're interested in giving it a whirl, we would love to add your input to the collective pool. Any content feedback is also more than welcome. We're also still working out some kinks, so please forgive us for any technical glitches while we get it all sorted out.

The link can be found here: http://bethecommittee.com/

Thanks, and Go Blue!

Colorado, Wisconsin, and penn state are all in their conference championship games. We beat three teams playing for their conference championships. If Colorado beats Washington and Wisconsin beats PSU, it would be hard for the committee not to put us or Wisconsin in. But if they don't put us in, I pray for the team that has to play us in a bowl game because Michigan will be out for vengeance.

Anybody that thinks a conference title makes you better after a head to head blowout is either:

A) an idiot or

B) there is no B because Penn State fans are all fucking idiots.

1. Michigan 100%

2. Alabama 86%

3. Ohio State 83%

4. Washington 71%

Sorry, I couldn't pick against Michigan. The data made the teams recognizable and I couldn't pick against my team!

Alabama OSU Clemson Michigan I know we have lost 2/3, but our QB was hurt in the end of one and we lost in double OT on the road to number 2. So if Washington loses tonight, I just don't get how you could choose PSU/Wisconsin or Colorado over a team that beat ALL of them.

Especially under the QB circumstances.  Talking heads aren't the only ones who realize Speight is/was not 100%.  Clemson had a healthy Watson all year and they needed L'ville to crap away a double digit lead, NC State's kicker to choke, and the refs to screw FSU to have only one loss going into tomorrow night.

Plus, the stink from that officiating crew last week still smells.  I wonder how the in-game commentary will go considering the CFP Committee is watching.

Alabama
OSU
Michigan
Washington
Clemson
Wisconsin
Colorado
Penn State
Oklahoma

Pretty cool system. I tried my best to not think about which teams were which, but it was pretty easy to tell which one was Michigan's.

If Wisconsin or PSU make it to the playoff it's a wasted bid.

Not saying we'd beat Alabama, but we'd at least make it a game. Might even have a legit shot. Wisconsin would fizzle out by the third quarter with not having a competent offense, and Penn State would be signing its own death certificate the moment that game was scheduled. That game would be 56-3. At halftime.

First of all, AWESOME job on the site. I got:

Alabama (100%), OSU (88%), Michigan (71%), Clemson (67%), Washington (60%), Wisconsin (44%), PSU (33%) and Colorado (22%).

I of course could tell which one Michigan was but really tried to be objective. Prior to this, I would have assumed I would have the same results but with Michigan and Clemson flipped.

I know of course they won't, but it would an interesting exercise for the committee or writers/talking heads to take before they go all hot take crazy. Will this be updated after bowl games? The advanced metric profiles, Top10/25 W-L will change, etc. It would be really interesting to see then. Thanks!

Thank you for the feedback. Because of the tight deadline, this was pulled together over 24 hours so there are a lot of features we'd like to add.

We're looking at expanding to top 25 and will update the site once we figure out how to do well. We will also roll this out for college hoops before March Madness and again before next football season.

First, this is a really cool idea and it was a fun process to go through. I also really enjoyed seeing my results. Since you're just launching, I'd like to offer some improvement suggestions: 1. Can the rankings be done with fewer comparisons? For example, if I ranked A higher than B and B higher than C, I don't need to compare A and C. 1a. If you need to keep the number of comparisons, a progress bar would be helpful. 2. One piece of important data is missing: head to head result. This could have swung some of my comparisons. 3. I also enjoyed reading other peoples' results in this post. That would be a nice feature on your site along with links to Twitter, Facebook or whatever the younglings are using these days. Again, great idea, great site. I'll be back Sunday and try again if team data is updated! Oh, and FWIW, I got: Ala, OSU, UM, UW. Clemson was first team out.

Thank you for the feedback! This was churned out in about 24 hours, so we're definitely looking at how to improve the site and add features.

Your suggestions are good. We're looking at #1 in order to shorten the process. I'm going to look at the data before implementing to see how frequently people vote circularly (e.g., A > B, B > C, C > A).

Also, were you on a mobile device? There are twitter and facebook buttons on the page, but realized that they're not showing on mobile. I'll fix this.

Great site, hard to be objective but doing my best made it clear that psu has the better blind resume than Wisconsin, but with 49-10 still a thing I'd still think we prefer psu. Tough to say

I had 1. Michigan 2. Osu 3. Bama 4. Clemson 5. PSU. I'm glad I have Michigan #1, but I don't even agree with my own rankings, PSU at 5 is absurd. I didn't look at overalll record and who they lost to so I would have less of an idea which team was which.

it's Michigan v. OSU

I actually picked UM...well, because I knew what the matchup was but...everything else was equal AND Mich...uh, Team 2 had one more victory against a CCG participant.

EDIT: I had Alabama (100), Michigan (89), Ohio State (75), Clemson (57) with Washington #5 (50)

I had Alabama Michigan Ohio State at 89% and Washington at 67%

My model didn't like Clemson very well, had them at #7. Everyone talks about Washington's schedule but I think Clemson played an FCS school as well
