Biggest Difference from OSU against the Spread on Same Day?

Submitted by JHumich on November 16th, 2019 at 7:14 PM

We covered by 20 today (34-14), and OSU failed to cover by 18 (53-35). So, we did 38 points better ATS than they did today.

Does anyone have an easy way of looking up what the top ten largest such margins in our favor have been on a given Saturday?

Thanks in advance!

p.s. I find both results extremely encouraging. What a great day to be a Michigan Wolverine!

I think OSU has been preparing for PSU and us since the 4th quarter of the Wisconsin game back in October. Betting they spent most of their bye and the past two weeks on anything but MD/Rutgers.

credit to Rutgers, they were still swinging late in the 4th. Maryland packed it in at half. OSU’s 2’s/3’s put up 31 on them.

Relax guys...if you watched the Rutgers-OSU game you would know it was a glorified scrimmage. 42-7 when OSU took out Fields and the rest of the starters in early third quarter. Although it wasn’t OSU’s best game of the year, it would have been 70-7 if they leave the starters in. The only thing they cared about was getting through the game with no injuries.

The only breakdowns for them were a muffed punt and being goal line stopped by Rutgers!

Frankly, OSU didn't show up today. And won by 35..... Haven't been this bored watching OSU since the Florida A&M game in 2015.......

How often does a team fail to cover by 18? Think about it. It can't happen very often. If I recall when the Rams lost to the Patriots in the 2002 Super Bowl, they were favored by 14 and lost by 3, so in that huge upset, the Rams failed to cover by 17.

Why does it matter? Is there a correlation between covering the spread and being a good team? Once you establish a correlation, can you establish causation? Curious.

Don't really think anyone can take too much out of the OSU-Rutgers game as it was 42-7 with still around 13 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter when they started emptying the bench.  Gotta believe OSU's main goal was to get out of there without any injuries.

Absolutely right! I cringed everytime Fields stepped out of the pocket or ran the ball.

I don't believe anyone was injured. After the opening 2nd half KO drive, no regulars played the rest of the half on either side of he ball.

Rutgers needs to be banished to the American Athletic.

Awful thread.  Patterson was throwing TDs late in the 4th while Fields was resting 2mins into the 2nd half.  You actually think today meant something encouraging for the OSU game?  If UM comes out flat against them like they did today the game will be over after 1 quarter.

The difference is Sparty still thought they were good back then. Now they know they’re trash. They realize they’re 1990s AFC in Super Bowls.

I gotta believe last week's collapse to Illinois (yes, ILLINOIS) after being up 28-3 (I believe that was the score) was the dagger in their program and was the one that sends Dumbtonio packing at the end of the season. They're just horrible - no other way to put it.

I hear what you're saying but when it spins out of control like it has at MSU, changes need to be made. They're just horrible - no other way to play it.  Just can't let it go any farther.  Granted - I'll give Dumbtonio his due - he's done more with less but that's not the case anymore. Maybe and up and comer like Fickell ?

OSU played their 3’s for the 4th quarter. We were running the 1’s right down to the end. It looked like a scrimmage.

Their starters have played 15 possessions in the last three weeks and have an 84-7 advantage.  That puts them at 12 TDs in 15 possessions and they took a knee to end the half on one of the 3.

I don’t think they care about the spread but their 2’s and 3’s playing 4 quarters of football in November is good for them. Their #2 D looks good enough to play anyone.

Good points and your post is exactly why looking at the final score doesn't always tell the whole story.  I thought I read somewhere that this is their 10th straight win this year all by at least 24 points which I believe is some kind of all time record.  That sure allows a lot of valuable November playing time for the 2nd and 3rd stringers.

A much more relevant numerical comparison is this:

We managed all of 83 yds rushing against MSU for 2.3 yds/carry.

OSU rushed for 323 for 6.6 per carry against the Spartans.

So then we’re the better team I guess? We’ve improved but OSU is still on a different level. I just hope we give them a game in two weeks and don’t get destroyed and embarrassed.

They'll be favored but it won't be a route this year. Look for a nail biter in the Big House. Unfortunately, I think they blast PSU and clinch a berth in the B!G championship game this coming Saturday.  I sure wish we could redo that 1st half against PSU.  We did expose PSU for the fraud they are and have no doubt who would win if we played them again today.
