Big Ten goes 6-2 in round one

Not too shabby.  Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Rutgers and Maryland win.  OSU and Purdue lose.

(There was talk of nine teams being in the tournament but only eight were in the first round.  Not sure what happened there.)

I wouldn't be surprised at all for Maryland to give Alabama a tough game. They've had some big wins against good teams when they're not getting crushed by Michigan. When they're on, their all-wing team has everyone contributing on offense and causes problems on D.

Having said that, congrats to Bama. In literally every game of their half of the bracket, the lower seed won. They could play Michigan without having beaten anyone higher than a 10 seed.

Pretty sure all brackets were locked in before the tournament started, and mine wasn't locked in until Friday. Also, I'm looking at my CBS bracket right now, which has all of the teams that made the tournament, and Michigan State is not listed anywhere in my bracket.

Not that I care too much, but I don't think those two losses are offset by the three wins against slightly higher seeds.

To put it another way, reverse those five outcomes and imagine 5-3 with decisive wins by OSU and Purdue. The conference would look better with a worse record.

I'll be impressed if Wisconsin, Rutgers, or Maryland can do it again.

I don't get all the hate for this comment. Wisconsin, Rutgers and Maryland help restore conference reputation but I think most neutral observers are concluding Big Ten is not as strong as expected. But it's close enough with strong showing Sunday and Monday Big Ten can get back to being considered strongest conference.

Yes - Technically the B1G has outperformed the seeding (as the best conference overall) in round one but both high seeds were expected to make it to/past the sweet 16.

That said both the SEC (by one) and the ACC (by 2) have underperformed in round one and were ranked lower than the B1G to begin with.  The Big 12 is chalk at present pending the TX game and the Pac12 is +1 (like the B1G) pending the UCLA game.

It does appear to me -- as many suspected -- that the "lower" conferences were very difficult to rank and/or undervalued with the lack of crossover play.   --Just the eye-test but it seems like teams like ORU, GCU, Iona etc. were under-ranked as 15s.  (No excuses for Purdue - they looked awful on both sides of the ball.)

New England bragging is a tradition extending at least back to the self-promoting writers of transcendentalist literature. In the modern day, Massholes think they're the most competent, bad-ass drivers on earth. Don't get me started on the hospitals. (At least their reputation is somewhat deserved.)
