Big 10 Title scenarios

Submitted by mxair23 on

I was talking with my two favorite types of fans, OSU, and MSU (sarcasm inserted). We were talking about what would happen in a few different scenarios. I thought I had a good idea of what would be the case but I wasn't exactly for sure. They had no clue. I thought that in result of a tie they first looked at matches between the teams and if their was a tie still they went to the BCS rankings. below are the 3 scenarios I remember. I appreciate any help or links related to this topic.

3 way tie: If Sparty loses to PSU with Wisconsin, and OSU winning out-making it a three way tie. Who wins the Big 10 title?

3 way tie: Sparty loses to Iowa and wins the rest of their games and so does Wisconsin and OSU. Who wins the Big 10 title?

3 way tie: Sparty loses to Iowa but Iowa beats OSU. Wisconsin wins out creating a three way tie between Sparty, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Who wins Big 10 title?

I hope Michigan can throw a monkey wrench into all these scenarios!! Thank god for a conference championship game next year!!

Thanks for your help!

Any positive press they get makes our job more difficult. Recruiting, short term national perception, living with them for the next decade after this bullshit. OSU, they are OSU so people expect them to win and its not going to change anything that hasn't already for us.

You're right that was probably uncalled for. The discussion of the scenarios is fine, I just have issues with people "asking" questions to which they could easily look up the answers themselves. Shouldn't have been an ass though. Maybe I'm just depressed about the WifeDay loss still.

Nobody gets more mileage out of one good game or one good season than Sparty.  The Spartybragging that will happen if they go 11-1 or (gasp) 12-0 will last for at least ten years.  They can regress to the mean next year and go 5-7, 6-6, or 7-5 for the next ten, but Sparty fans will still buy into their self-created Sparty Juggernaut Theory.

What irks me the most about Sparty scenarios is that not only do they not have to play OSU, but USC is ineligible for the Rose Bowl.  Also, a one-loss Sparty Rose Bowl team probably won't have to play Oregon, because Oregon will probably go undefeated and end up in the "Championship Game."  This will deprive Sparty of the thrashing it would get if it played any of those teams, or any of the four best in the SEC right now.

Ultimately, though, the main difference between MSU's tradition and Michigan's tradition is that Michigan has a season like this one to three times a decade; MSU has them once every fifty years.  Sparty, though, will brag as though they are now THE program in college football.

I think the best-case scenario here is for Sparty to get beaten in the Rose Bowl by Stanford.  That way, MIchigan fans can utter a two-word response when Sparty brags about 2010: Jim Harbaugh.

Oh yeah, I see that being a great thing for RichRod.  Besides, Oregon would need to lose two conference games for Stanford to have a shot.  This year, if the Big Ten or Pac 10 loses a team to the BCS title game, then a non-BCS team would fill their slot.  So it would more likely be either 1-loss Oregon or TCU/Boise/Utah playing in the Pac 10 slot.

This scenario:

Michigan wins out ... MSU is beaten by Iowa and is "No Sparty!'d by a resurgent Penn State to close the season ... Iowa loses to Ohio State.

This creates a five way tie for first. Iowa is eliminated based on overall winning percentage. The closing fury of the Wolverines vaults them past the other teams in the BCS rankings and the Big Ten Champion and BCS bowl representative is ... Meeeechigan!!!!

It could happen! In fact, I calculate the approximate odds against at only 141 to 1. Stranger (but few more wonderful) things have happened. Keep the dream alive!
