Ben Herbert signs 5 year extension

Our favorite S&C coach has inked a new deal to stay with the good guys for a while longer! He’s now tied with Rob Glass of Oklahoma State for the highest paid strength and conditioning coach in the country.

His base salary will increase to $900,000 per year in 2024, plus a retention bonus of $100,000 on August 1st. Some quick mathing tells me that’s $1 million yearly going forward.

Harbaugh on Herbert: "He is the X-factor in our football program. He is the center of player development. He is phenomenal; more than anybody in our entire program. It's with every player, it's with every position group.”

I couldn’t agree more with Harbaugh. This guy has made a huge difference since his arrival. We no longer run out of gas late in games and it really seems like he’s getting the most out of nearly every player on the roster. I’m happy we went the Teddy KGB route on this “pay him, pay that man his money.”

Awesome news. Players seem to like him and he has proven results. Arguably this is one of the most important staff members of a football team.

This may be the best news of the offseason, and I include Davis' commitment in that.

Herbert has revolutionized our S&C program and getting him for $1 million a year is great bang for the buck.

Worth every penny - as touched on in the article stregnth coaches spend more time with the players over the off season than any other coach. They also impact every position group in the program. Absolutely thrilled to have BH locked up for the next 5 years. Let's go!

Excellent news, we have had one of the most physically dominant teams the last couple of years. Only Georgia's Trenning staff has built a roster that could push us around

Great signing.  In the 5 seasons since we hired him back in 2018, Michigan's looked stronger every year.  Want Moore awards?  It starts in the weight room.  Ben was groomed by Wisconsin and moved up to S&C coach in 2009 under Bort Bileamia, and followed him down to Arkansas for that failed experiment.  We snapped him up and before his contract extension runs out, he will have coached here longer than his Wisconson and Arkansas runs combined. It was an underrated hiring success for Harbaugh, for whom he must love working.  His extension is a fantastic piece of news for us.  The kids reciprocate his love of the weight room, too.  Just look at how enthusiastically they cheered Corum on that clip from last week and how jacked the onlookers were.  Love me some Herbert!

In NFL this is much more the case. Training habits already established.

In college it’s huge.  Young men developing into adults.  Strength, conditioning, diet, habits are everything.

Technique/position coaches, specifically working with underclass men are also vital cogs in CFB.

The other key element to an S&C coach is they have no limits to their contact with players. They can literally see them all year. So their influence can't be overstated.

So Herbert is not just a a solid S&C coach, he's also a great influence and motivator.  There is no way Blake Corum is Blake Corum, benching like an Olineman, without Ben Herbert.

Shout-out too to Abigail O'Connor. The nutritional component is as important as the physical.

Excellent news. The S&C is the center of the program throughout the offseason. They set the tone, establish culture and work with players are achieving their off season goals.

Beating OSU, winning the big team and being national champs starts the first day of the offseason.

the S&C staff molds the physical and mental discipline for success !

He's earned every penny. Our lines now look like the lines that you would be jealous of at other schools. The guy is a beast, as intense and knowledgeable as they come, and does wonders for the culture of greatness. He's the one coach that is not expendable.

Ben deserves to be at the top of the S&C pay scale. The 5 year deal is sweet. Sounds like Ben wants to stay at Michigan for a long while.
