Basketball game times & TV designations announced; 5(!) games on Peacock

Submitted by MH20 on October 3rd, 2023 at 12:25 PM

TV networks and game times for Michigan basketball were announced today. I hope y'all grabbed that yearlong Peacock deal because Michigan has FIVE(!) games on that streaming platform: Indiana and Minnesota at home and Purdue, MSU, and Illinois on the road. By my count that's four big games which is super annoying but I guess not all that surprising, since I'm sure NBC needs/wants those subs.

Anyway, the UMHoops link below has a nice table with all of games and their respective tip times and networks. Read the mgoblue link if you want some company line stuff.

If a game is being played on Peacock, why does it need to start at 9 p.m.?

Can't Peacock show a game at any of the time of day, including multiple games at the same time?

Yeah, ESPN and FS1 would have had the game at 9 because they'd be following games on TV at 7.

But on Peacock, you don't have to worry about fitting in two games on one channel.

You can still hit the prime time hours with an 8 pm tip. 8-10 is just as good as 9-11. As long as you're hitting 9-10, you're good.

Peacock has a full slate of Tuesday 7 p.m./9 p.m. doubleheaders just like there are on ESPN (and sometimes FS1). Glancing at their lineup, seems like Peacock is getting a lot of games that used to be on ESPN.

Well, they're the geniuses so perhaps they have super good reasons to do it this way.

But unlike on ESPN they could easily have two games on at the same time, so they are not bound to 7/9 start times like they are when airing it on the same cable network.

I'm sure the logic is something along the lines of, if we have 4 hours of programming instead of 2 or 3, we'll get a lot more numbers for selling advertising (on top of our subscription)!

I would guess that Peacock is thinking:  Why would I want to have all of the games on my network compete with each other for viewers and hurt the ratings of each when I can stagger those games and increase viewership of each.  I don't love the late starts, but from a ratings and business perspective, it makes sense.

Problem is, if I'm tuning into Peacock specifically for Michigan-Indiana, I'm probably not gonna force myself to watch say Nebraska-Rutgers, or whatever, as the lead-in game.  Would rather gouge my eyes out.

I feel like the answer to this is obvious. So they can have live content for twice as long and hope people stay with it. It's a subscription service, but it also has ads that they sell.

It probably doesn't matter to the people who only watch their own team, but a double header feels a lot more likely to draw casuals in than a one off.

I was just about to cancel yesterday, then I checked the football schedule to see we were on the Cock this Saturday.  They offered me 3 months at $2.99 to stay so there is that.  Hopefully I can pull that again.

At the end of the day we are talking about $6.99. I've spent way more on things I don't need.  Should end up less than the chumps who paid for the full year.

I currently have the 3 months at 2.99 offer and Im hoping they extend me the same offer you got to stay. If not I think Ill try cancelling and signing up with a new E-Mail for whatever deal theyre offering. I was already considering keeping Peacock for Premier League but with 5 basketball games as well its definitely worth another 9 dollars to me.

I'm actually really interested in this team.  I appreciated Dickinson but was sick of it and it wasn't going anywhere.  Also, Bufkin and Howard were both great individual talents but it did not make for a cohesive team.  I am looking forward to seeing Dug and Tarris as centerpieces and seeing some of the freshman develop.

I’m not convinced you are outraged as you claim.  Unless you thought that Bufkin was possibly coming back, which nobody really thought after January.

Bufkin was really good, but he was on a team with Howard, and they, two lottery picks, could not make the tournament.  They weren’t very good together, and neither of them were coming back, so yes they are lumped together.

Who didn't see that coming? I'm surprised it's only five. My guess was it was going to be somewhere around 8 after they announced the football game.

I just cancelled my subscription to Peacock. The service was underwhelming and 9 PM  tips for Michigan Basketball aint enough to bring me back

I don't know what the Athletic Department is thinking about, but it isn't the season ticket holders for Hockey and Men's basketball.  There are THREE direct home conflicts:

Friday November 10  Hoops: Youngstown St  630pm  Hockey: Minnesota TBD

Friday November 17  Hoops: Long Beach St  700pm  Hockey:  Penn St  TBD

Saturday January 27  Hoops:  Iowa 500pm  Hockey:  Wisconsin  TBD

I don't have Peacock and we ditch YTTV during the football offseason anyway. I'll probably miss March Madness a little, but considering the $73/month we'll save by doing it and the fact that 90% of what we watch is on streaming anyway, I think I'll manage.

I wish all of Michigan's men's basketball last year had been on Peacock!

I ran into Trey Burke at the gym last week and I remembered how fun M basketball was and can be.

Dear Coach Howard, please bring the fun back!
