shut it down in time to redshirt because he simply had not recovered yet.  He probably should not have played this year at all but with the scholarship situation I don't think he knew for sure whether he would have another opportunity to play.  Players recover from surgery all the time.  There is no reason to believe that he can never play at a high level again.

he flat out said he was retiring from basketball.  he only recently decided to pursue further basketball options.  it's a smart move.  at a minimum he gets another free year of college, even if it turns out he can't play.

Spike is Michigan and Michigan is Spike...hes a team Leader  and seeing him in any other uniform other than Michigan is just unthinkable...whether he ever even steps foot on the court or  not is irrelevant..If he  has another year left it should be wearing a MICHIGAN uniform

couldn't move the next year, and then the next year he was very good for Indiana. Spike will be in the exact same situation. Beilein himself said that he was shocked how much better Max looked this year. Is he really going to make the exact same mistake one year later - the EXACT. SAME. MISTAKE???

Looks like it!

It's a scholarship for one year, occupying a spot that is currently open, and for which there will likely be no compelling fit -- especially on a team bringing back everybody that just went to the tournament.

It basically costs the program nothing to take Spike back for another year and see what happens. The goodwill is worth something, too. This is more of a freeroll than a bet where we have something to lose. I'm boggled as to why it would be out of the question.

Hatch is another one we had on scholarship that couldn't play basketball. We all love these guys but we can't then bitch about not having enough talent on the team. I love Beilein being a good guy and wanting what's best for the kids but we can't have it both ways.

That is a ridiculous comparison. Spike played basketball at a high level at michigan for several years. He had some hip surgeries which take time to recover from, and how he will have had time to recover from. He will most likely be a very good player next year at a position of need. This makes no damn sense. It is the second year in a row we are doing something stupid and dumb and insane for no reason. I don't know how you people can watch this happen and not lose your shit.

But if he is starting to feel the heat, how can you warrant spending a scholarship on Spike?  He hasn't played a competitive game in over a year - and he RETIRED.  You need to consider that as an indicator of his long-term health - i.e. just a few months ago, Spike himself didn't think he would ever play college basketball again.  How is that a good option for a 1 year scholarship?

Obvious disclaimer that I love Spike and I'd be happy to see him on the team, but I wouldn't be surprised if he never plays another game.

unfortunately their roster management has proven, time and time again, to be not trustworthy, most recently with the very similar max bielfeldt situation. but by all means, don't draw any conclusions.

Many were saying offering a 4 year scholarship to an unheralded, lightly recruited player, was bad roster management.  Beilein can't bring back a guy with injury issues to be insurance in the event of injury.  They have yet to determine what Spike will be able to do, how soon he'll be able to do it and how many minutes he'll require.  Maybe this develops over time to be all good but the decision is being made while all of these things are questions.

Obviously it is a different situation. But we still used a scholarship for someone that we didn't know could ever play basketball again. I don't remember many people being pissed off we didn't keep giving Austin Hatch a scholarship and Spike coming back is just ad much an unknown. Beilein didn't tell Spike to come to him and retire and we held a retirement press conference for him. It is just as likely that both Spike and Hatch never play competitive basketball again. On top of that, Beilein didn't tell Spike no. He said we would see about the scholarship situation. It sounds like Beilein wants to use the scholarship on a player he thinks will contribute. And if he can't, then Spike will get a chance.

I wish I didn't have to actually explain this in words and you could just "get it," but I guess here we go:

Austin Hatch had a horrible tragedy happen to him. He was nearly killed. His entire family was actually killed. We gave him a token scholarship even after assuming that he would never play again. We did this for "goodwill" or whatever you want to call it because Coach isnt a complete fucking monster.

Spike ... had hip surgery seemingly because his hips don't work well... and may not be able to play again.

That is what makes these two entirely different situations. I mean you understand that, right?

Yes, being a patronizing dickhead got me to understand your point. The funny part is that I was actually agreeing with you. No, I don't think being in 2 plane accidents and losing your family is similar to having 2 hip surgeries. I do think that offering a scholarship at this point to Spike would be, to use your classification, giving him a token scholarship because we don't know if he will ever play basketball again. Using a scholarship on a still rehabbing 5th year senior that may never play again would be a goodwill gesture from a coach that offered him a chance to not play at Appy State. The scholarship situation is similar as I don't think either will play basketball again so offering either of them a scholarship is a nice gesture by Beilein if we have one available that won't be used. We both had similar points except I didn't need to be a complete asshole to get my point across. Although you are usually an asshole, so I shouldn't be surprised

to answer before bringing him back. Can he play at anywhere near his former level? Is it a good idea for him to even try? Michigan's medical staff knows a lot more about that than anyone on the outside looking in. If the answers are yes, I'm in favor of bringing him back, even if one of the transfer candidates may add a little more.
