Assistant Coaches who have left

Submitted by w2j2 on September 23rd, 2019 at 3:41 PM

It appears that the departures of coaches Mattison and Washington have had a significant effect on Harbaugh's team.  I wonder if there could be a shared (& unstated) reason as to why they left ....

Going to a team that's regularly competed for B10 titles, been in the hunt for the CFP and

Mattison was making $525k and is now making $1.1 million

Washington was making $375k and is now making $500,000.

Ahh...those were the good old days of the culture wars.

I think they ended up convicting a bunch of out of state students and a kid from Bloomfield Hills for malicious destruction of property less than $200.  None of them had a criminal record.

And Treetops got a makeover from their insurance company.

So, the only lasting thing is the dumb kid's new criminal records.

THAT was justice worth fighting for!!!

P.S. - Do you think those kids trashed the place because they knew something was wrong in the Michigan locker room? They were signaling the chaos of this Harbaugh team?

Yup. And Mattison likes saw the writing on the wall & knew the DL bottom would drop out in the 2019 season.

So.....on one hand, double his salary to $1.1M. On the other, forego that raise & also have to deal with a total rebuild at his position group due to a lack of recruiting/retention that he was largely responsible for.

Aside from the whole Benedict Arnold dynamic, it’s a pretty obvious choice.

I doubt it.  Mattison has left places to coach at rival before.  He coached at ND.  He coached under Meyer.  He coached at UM under JH.  He wanted to be a coordinator again...can't blame him there.  Washington was always an OSU guy.  It may be effecting the team, but it's hard to blame them for leaving.

I think bigger than the absence of Mattison is the absence of defensive tackles. That will make everyone else on the defense look worse. Mattison left because he was offered a promotion and a raise. Al Washington was born and raised in Columbus. I'm not sure there's much more to those two moves than that.

Not sure Mattison’s departure is contributing that much to our issues - I think it’s more about our DT recruiting

Because the coaches fucked up.  They have recruited lots of defensive lineman who either aren't any good and can't see the field,  get injured or transfer.

This is becoming a trend with this coaching staff.  Many players ending up being highly overrated ( Solomon, singleton,  Jordan Anthony?? ) are just a few examples.

Part of being a good coach is bringing in the right guys.

I don't blame the mods for just calling it a week and letting everyone get it out of their systems, because this board is just full of winners since Saturday.

What happened with all the existing DTs transferring out?   I don't follow the board as closely during the off season. Did they leave because Mattison and Washington left?

Day sure as hell know what he was doing.

Obviously mAttison wanted to be the top DC With his system not under Browns.  And Harbaugh sold Washington to come here yet fully knew he was all OSU

Active moderators would be such a good thing to have. This isn't a "message," it's an idle musing that could have been buried and forgotten in any one of a hundred of these miserable threads.
