Anyone else's power go out in Ann Arbor?

Submitted by aaamichfan on
Title is self explanatory. It seems too early in the year for a blackout, but here we are. Is this a widespread problem in A2, or just my neck of the woods?

Ya might need an "OT" in front of your subject line.

But anyway no I didn't lose power, but the lights flickered at work. I live on the south side of town and honestly the power is more touchy here than my relative's home out in the boonies.

But I've been surprised it hasn't been browning out more all day long, with the record heat.

But did you call the power company? Too many times people just assume "oh well, someone called"...and then when you get through "no, sir, we haven't heard anything about that...".

And the more calls they get, and know there's a higher number of problems in that area (and not just the "are you sure it's not just to your house?"), the faster they work on it.

And where are you? How are you on the Internet at home with no power?

Because I was just outside the other area's line, and it's hit our neighborhood too. Lights by Stadium and Busch's were out, but back on when I came back...but now Eisenhower Saline area is out, as is the strip mall there. So I made a slurpee run and hit a library. AC is working there.

My automated BS voice that wouldn't let me talk to a human no matter how long I was willing to wait said fixed by midnight to 2 am. We'll see. Fucking DTE.

wells and packard area. there is a construction crew at the wells, south forest, and prospect intersection...not sure if it was them or not but this isn't cool

Our power is out. We're just outside the city on the east side. My wife is hot so she striped down to a bikini. If anyone from DTE is reading this, take your time guys, take your time. I think we're on a brownout not a blackout though.

Also phones that you can tether to a laptop are awesome.

Powers on at Elm and Geddes, but just made a Meijer trip and there are several lights out along Main and Packard along the way there. Made for some interesting driving.

From an annarbor.com article:

An estimated 2,500 customers are without power in Ann Arbor, according to DTE Energy.

The outages - concentrated near State Street near Burns Park and the Lansdown neighborhood off Scio Church Road - started just before 6 p.m.

Unclear so far is when power will be restored. More scattered outages were reported near Geddes Road and in Ann Arbor Hills.
Must turn back on before mavericks game!!!!
They had two estimated fix times on their website...9:30 and 11:30 so hopefully the former is correct

As long as it's fixed by a reasonable time tonight, I'll be happy. If it's not repaired by dark(probably 30 more minutes) I'll just use it as an excuse to go out for dinner and get a little bit wasted.

Back in the day, doing storm work at Seven Mile and Evergreen, I had the pleasure of watching people rob a pizza place as we tried to explain Detroit to a crew from southern Indiana......add that to the "When the f-ck is the power coming back?", and it was a recipe for....well, fortunately it was a simple fix for that part of the circuit.

Those of you on Hemlock circuits.....the old transformers tend to fail in the heat. There are several projects out there aiming to get them out of there in favor of 21st century equipment - don't know what to tell you otherwise. You're in my particular area of responsibility out there though, so if you've had issues, let me know and I can get them addressed somehow.

At the risk of jinxing my good luck, I've lived on the west side (Montgomery, off W. Washington) since 2005, and I can count on one hand the number of power outages I've had in that time, and can really only remember one or two that lasted any length of time. Perk of living near downtown? Dumb luck?

Well, I'm sure I needn't tell you that power is probably the biggest thing in this world that most of us take for granted. So, for whatever part you might have played in keeping mine on nearly 100% of the time I've lived in this neighborhood, I thank you. I'm going to drink a beer in your honor.

Till tonight, I've lost power like 4 times in the last year that weren't do to heat (overuse), cold (freezing), wind or storms, or accidents (someone hit the transformer). It just goes out on a perfectly clear, nice day. And it's always my side of the street. The opposite block, and the apartments being me, just keep humming away with power. Then add in another couple due to last year's storms, and consistent brown outs, and I'm not sure what I'm paying for, other than the "discounts" I get when my meter isn't running due to not getting any power.

Updated outage map below with more outage areas indicated. Not sure if these are new outages or just ones that hadn't been reported earlier.

Those of you in the yellow areas - your outages are probably heat-related failures. You folks have the pleasure of utilizing our older equipment which was installed before air conditioning was a consideration in distribution design. If you live on or near Kensington or Marlborough Streets....my apologies. I designed all that work in your backyards, but it is only part of the solution.

Orange areas - damn trunkline feeding State substation. They are likely patrolling it now - you can't just turn on a 40 kV line. You don't want that fire, and we don't want that fire.

This is the part of my work that is a little tricky....the answer is "it depends". Not having been out there myself, obviously I don't really know what is wrong, but based on knowing Ann Arbor's circuits, I can speculate. As odd as it may sound, larger outages tend to be easier fixes (i.e., fuses open, protective devices locked out, etc....), so if that is all it is, then once it is found, your wait would be short. Crews just need to get approval from the system supervision group downtown to close in equipment like that. If it is a physical failure of some sort and they need to replace equipment - that might take a while.

If it is a failure due to heat-related issues, then the night air helps, but someone still has to figure out which equipment failed.....being at home at not having all my maps and programs up, I couldn't say much else. Sorry about that.

If' you're on the southeast side, then it's either Regent or Pittsfield substation, more than likely. Those two tend to hold out better on hot days *knock on wood*. Regent circuits - for those of you along S. Univesity and Washtenaw Avenue....individually, they can be interesting from time to time.
