Another example of Michigan going worldwide...

Submitted by Helloheisman on

On a recent trip to Liverpool to catch a LFC match I read about a certain pub by the name of The Albert which has a vast collection of scarfs from all over the world. After thinking about this I concluded no collection could be complete without a Michigan scarf. So I brought one over to The Albert which is basically on the grounds of Anfield (Liverpool's home stadium). So if anyone is in the area anytime feel free to see if you can spot the Michigan scarf and enjoy a good pint.

and I try to add to it wherever I go. I live in a small Mexican village during the winter located about 35 miles to the west of Guadalajara named Ajijic(Ah'hee'heek). Still has the cobblestoned streets built by the Spanish in the 1500s, but full of expats from America, Canada and a sprinkling of Euros. The majority of them live their year round, but I'm still having problems staying away from Pere Marquette Beach in the summers.   In 2011 the owner of my favorite watering hole in Ajijic was always wearing a hockey jersey(normally cheap knock-offs) of any given NHL team. He is native Mexican-American, but does enjoy dual citizenship.  I always try to wear some type of M gear when watching a game, and when we were playing VT in the bowl game, I opted for a M hockey jersey given to me by my son for my Birthday some years earlier.  It was top shelf and probably ran him between 80-100. While watching the game I decided should M win, I would honor him by presenting him with the M jersey after the game. Well, of course, we won but his reaction when I presented him the jersey was even more gratifying. His eyes actually teared and with no offense to our neighbors up north, he said, "The big difference between Americans and Canadians is Americans are so generous." For anyone who has read my posts, you are aware now I can't get a paragraph break on this site.    ^   He asked me how people would know it represents Michigan with just the block M on the front?  I told him, "Believe me they will know, and you will see this."  A couple weeks later when I returned to the bar after touring some ancient Mayan ruins he said to me in Spanish, "You were right. It must be something you Michigan fans say to one another."  He informed me that four Gringos(different occasions), after paying their tabs and leaving the bar, before they got outside turned back to him and shouted, "Go Blue."  I shared this info with my son and explained to him why I gave away a birthday present from him. He thought it was as cool as I did. He said, "Anything to spread the knowledge Dad is a good thing."   ^ I found the same thing to be true with me simply by wearing a M T-shirt or cap. I will be walking down the sidewalk and it's not at all unusual for me to hear a driver passing by to shout out "Go Blue," during my trek. Always brings a smile to my face.

I live in Asia and when I was traveling in Hong Kong, I met a Buckeye who told me to go f*ck off cause I was wearing my Michigan Alumni hoodie. I looked at him very confused but it was nice when an older Buckeye fan told me sorry and we started chatting about our team's respective seasons. (This was in Rich Rod years, when Pyror was in his 1st -> 2nd year)

Later I was in Narita Airport in Japan and I got a few Go Blue's. Very nice to see it all around the world.

A friend and I, while on study abroad, drew a block M and wrote "Go Blue" in black marker on a railing on the top level of the Eiffel Tower.  Wherever you go . . .

even though I hate the scousers.  Also a cool story bro in the vein of the Eifel Tower "Go Blue" vandalism;  There is a block M "Go Blue" in the Palapa Bar in Ambergis Caye (1st floor, support pillar) and somewhere inside the N Seoul Tower in Seoul, South Korea, put there by myself and Mrs. Gopoohgo

But I moved to New Hampshire and within a couple of weeks, I saw several older couples with UM clothes on. Apparently I was in a common area for Boston retirees. So I guess this story can chalk one up for Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
