Allegations against Baylor involving football - will this affect JH Satellite Camp stop?

Submitted by Wolverine In Iowa 68 on

Just read up on this.  There have been a number of very serious allegations made against Baylor football programs for assault and worse.  Art Briles is coming under some heavy questioning, and the court of public opinion could be turning south on him/them quickly.

Question for the board, do you see this affecting Harbaugh's plans to camp there June 12?

Should it?

Comments and thoughts welcome.

This goes way beyond football.  If the reports are true, these things were reported all the way up to the President and he assisted in the cover-up.

I just learned today that Ken Starr is Baylor's president. Yes, that Starr that exposed Clinton for getting a BJ from Monica.  It's always comical when people decide to be "morally outraged" by somethings, and then sweep other terrible things under the rug.

In a strange twist of fate, Ken Starr's investigation of potential sexual misdeeds at Baylor will result in

...

uncovering some allegedly shady land deals that Briles was involved in decades earlier, which have precious little to do with what he was investigating in the first place.

...in fact I think it might be the key to the entire puzzle.

Clinton was married, and his partner in that act was not his wife. As a married man he's expected to control himself--he has an appropriate and available outlet after all.

These gentlemen were not married, so the blame falls on the women who allowed themselves to be alone with them.

I am not joking here. I've learned a lot about that place the last few years--I have family on staff there. It's still (thankfully) an alien world to me, but it has an internal consistency.

Yes I would like to believe that some things transcend football for our coach and not associating with a man willing to cover up sexual assault to win football games is something Harbaugh would value.

whenever you see a sudden, massive infusion of resources into an historically inept athletic program, you can be sure that a lot of people are looking the other way

I'm very troubled by the murmurings about misdeeds at Baylor, but not overly-worried that Harbaugh is doing a several hour camp with Briles.  It would be different if Harbaugh was on a BFF relationship with Briles, but their camping for one day only indicates that they are friendly rivals.

At first I was a bit appalled at the thought of Harbaugh camping with Briles.  But given that Michigan is really just speed-dating with a bunch of other h.s. and college coaches via the satellite camps, I'm not inclined to make too much of this.  If the investigations yield the dirt we expect them to, then I would hope that Harbaugh would not make future plans to "co-brand" with Briles.

That's all the more reason to cancel it though. If you were speed dating and found out one of the girls had a potentially very checkered past, why not just skip that one and move on to the next?

There is zero upside to taking part in that camp. Only bad PR can happen. Especially given the media lightning rods that Briles and Harbaugh are at the moment.

If it was a joint Briles / Harbaugh speech to coaches or some such, I might agree.  But by cancelling it now you would be leaving a lot of kids who signed up for the camp in the lurch.

Think of how you'd feel if you bought a ticket to go see The Rolling Stones with Billy Squier as the warm-up band, and the The Rolling Stones cancelled.  That's the position of a kid who has signed up for this camp if Harbaugh bails.

This, today, is the first I have heard of ths and I suggest we wait until more information is gathered and released. Obviously Harbaugh is not going to cave to public pressure, nor will he hesitate to pull  the plug on UM's involvment if it appears these charges as to Briles knowledge is true. Everyone Murders, I don't think you  can put this into the same context as concert tickets.

I would want to know more about the invovlement in the camp, whether an appearance by our head coach could be interpreted as an endorsement as to his personal feelings as to Briles knowledge, which based on this report, is the sole claim as of this time, yet not to be taken lightly. As I said, I think it wise just to wait and lets see what is realease in the near future and our decision might be made for us without us having to release a statement in either direction.

My point is that these camps, at a real level, are for the kids attending them.  If Harbaugh's presence is the tipping point that causes many kids to sign up for the camp, and he bails, it is an injustice to the kids who signed up.  And to the h.s. coaches and other coaches who signed up as part of the event.  So I think you have to take those things into account - because there's little doubt that Harbaugh is the "headliner" here.

Where my analogy fails is if you posit that the the Stones cancel the show due to allegations that Squier is involved in illicit activity.  I can't recall that sort of thing ever being an issue for the Stones!

glad you wrote "comments and thoughts welcome" otherwise we probably would have had no idea what to do with your post.

Isn't Baylor also known for sweeping up guys who got booted from other high profile programs because of assault or other unlawful/unethical behavior? I'm trying to think of some examples off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure one or a couple have been very recent.

the Baylor player who was arrested for sexual assault last month (Shawn Oakman) --- he got kicked off the Penn State team.

Shop-lifted a $7 hoagie (not cool, but potentially forgiveable if remorse is shown), assaulted a woman who caught him (this is definitely not cool), then was quoted afterwards "all us football players struggled to eat, I did what I had to do." (that's not remorse).

Given my rudimentary understanding of satellite camps, will this camp provide exposure to kids who have started looking somewhere else? The allegations are just sickening. Something must be done.

also the same Kenneth Starr who helped get billionaire convicted sex offender Jeffery Epstein a remarkably sweetheart deal from prosecutors in the late 2000s.  Epstein's back in the fringes of the news himself these days - his connections to Bill Clinton.

I hesitate to go down this road given someone will label me a cultist ---- but Louis Freeh is also involved at the periphery of this Baylor case.  The firm that Baylor/Starr hired in September 2015 to conduct the investigation?  PepperHamilton.  Freeh was at the firm in September (former chairman), he left this past January.  Freeh & Starr were very buddy buddy themselves in the early 2000s.   Starr did the newspaper and talk show circuit in 2001 defending Freeh (when Freeh left the FBI).  Does make one wonder about a "quid pro quo."

At the very least, Starr has an "interesting" past.  We'll see how the Baylor case unfolds; we'll see how transparent he is with the independent report.

It's not like JH and Briles have ever been mentioned in the same story before this camp. Maybe there will be a couple people wandering around the camp shaking their heads in mock-disbelief about everything going on at Baylor, A&M, Bama, Ole Miss, etc. If only there was a program on the upswing with a proven winner and offensive guru as head coach along with what might be the best defense in the country this year...

No.

Pulling out would be a major disservice to the HS kids that have paid to be apart of this camp. Harbaugh isn't going there to hang out with Briles, he's going there to recruit for UM and help teach at a FB camp.

I'm of the completely uninformed opinion that the Baylor athletic department is dirty as hell.  But Harbaugh is going to Harbaugh.  I don't think hoding a camp with Baylor is going to tarnish him unless Baylor is actually KNOWN to be in deep dodo at the time.  Allegations are just that--allegations.  Michigan isn't the NCAA's watchdog.  It isn't up to us to know if Baylor is playing dirty or not.

Is there a positive association between being good at football and breaking the law?  Maybe this speaks more to socioeconomics than anything else, but it seems so many good players and programs have legal issues.  I'm sure many college students have your run of the mill illegal activity such as underage drinking, but we seem to be seeing more of the sexual assualt, robbery, guns, violence, etc.  I'm not sure if it's just getting more publicized now because it's hard to hide in today's smart phone world where information travels fast through the internet or if it's happening more.

The camps are for the kids foremost.  Or so we tell ourselves.  If that's the case let the kids get access to great coaching.

NCAA can banhammer, or get paid off and watch conference and association members vote against their own interests because $ec ACC(@$$) speaks.  Common denominator is $$, NCAA thinks any school in the south is too cool to fail.
