Riemersma is the closest parallel here.   He was big and a split-second slow at QB.  He did have an arm injury, IIRC, that provoked the move, but I think he is a great candidate for TE and it could get him to the NFL, especially under Harbaugh's tutelage.

Why did he switch positions and take the title of "Assistant Sports Editor".?

....oh, that's right...............to improve his future.......Same as Zach is processing................dumb article.

Zach hasn’t returned phone calls to the Journal, nor has his father, Tom.

That’s unusual for a couple of down-to-earth, stand-up guys.

In Writerboy's world, class is apparently measured by how quickly you get back to a writer seeking comment.  I would actually venture to say that a down-to-earth, stand-up guy wouldn't be very interested in helping a sportswriter whine on his behalf, but what do I know.  What I do know is that it's one of many examples of writers being so fucking puffed-up arrogant that they think not giving them a quote is a mortal sin.

By being linked here, this has probably already become the most-read article of this writer's life.  What does that tell any aspiring sportswriter?  It tells him or her that, in lieu of actual quality writing, they can just insult Michigan and, as a result, become the most valuable employee of their paper.

Seconded but not for the same reason. It may be "horrible" but who cares? It is called freedom of speech. Let a local beat writer in NM have his or her opinion. People on this board are way too quick to jump on writers who don't always express the most glowing of Michigan praises.

riemersma was recruited at qb, played in NFL. Hines Ward played some qb in college but made is Mark in NFL as wide receiver. Writer is a little off. Rudock was not an NFL qb prospect until the end of his senior year, it's not like Harbaugh brought in some ringer. He developed after he beat out Gentry for the position. Gentry had his chance to beat Rudock, and if they are having him change then he must not be top 2 or even top 3. he's going along with it and not upset because he knows exactly where he is on the depth chart. I'm sure Harbaugh is upfront about competition. Read McCaffrey's quote about competition.

I thought Gentry was below Rudock, Morris, Speight and Malzone.  I think Riemersma is a good comparison since he never seemed to be a real threat to start over Todd Collins.  If the kid likes that taste of winning and just wants to see the playing field, sounds like a win-win.  If that means we recruit one less TE and one more CB or LB, I'm all for it.

For now gaining clicks from everyone east of Albuquerque to read this dribble. This was not a thought out article. So now the kid will play behind an All-American TE and will now see the field.

i mean, yeah, everybody should sign with Bama if their main goal is to be part of a National Championship

but if your interests are more about personal aspirations, being a QB or TE playing for Jim Harbaugh works out pretty well a great deal of the time...

He is a schmuck sportswriter.  The political dig was dumb and not funny and the indignation that the SID hadn't responded to his inquiry shows how he doesn't understand big time college athletics.

I was unaware that anyone in New Mexico cared that deeply about football.

If Harbaugh thinks this is the best way Gentry can help the team win, and if Gentry agrees, then what difference does it make what anyone else thinks?

Whew that's bad writing. I mean, I get why Gentry moving to TE bursts a lot of bubbles: guy is a freak athlete at that size. But to make it seem like an evil move to deny him his god-given right to be starting QB...that's a stretch. But hey, when have sportswriters ever let awful logic derail a rant?

happens any time you goto a blue blood. tons of 4 and 5 star qbs have transferred from USC after giving it a shot and not making it. how many 4 or 5 star RB's have left Bama? How does he think we got Ty Isaac. Competition happens at every school, especially the blue bloods because, as we've analyzed it ad nauseam, not every 5 star recruit lives up to their hype. so yes, you will have 4 and 5 stars sitting on the bench or changing positions to get playing time if they are fortunate enough to have that option.

But I guarantee the only drilling involving Gentry at UNM Stadium, would be the precision passes and big-time hits he’d be delivering against Lobo opponents.

So is this guy implying that UNM would have Gentry, their starting QB, also playing defense? Okay...

He hasn't even talked to the family and publishes this. What a (self-admitted) schmuck. It's almost like writing about Harbaugh is a way to draw attention, leave alone the idea this may be the best route for Gentry and QB's switching positions isn't exactly without precedent.

My email to this douche and his boss "Spewing cheap shots on Twitter at a city with more sports tradition, attractions, and history than the one you live in only makes you look like an uneducated buffoon. And I live in Utah, not Detroit."

the commentors are ripping the author. He admits up front that he doesn't know anythig, but proceeds to rant about how his hometown kid isn't fullfiling his fantasies.

Tough shit.
