Meaningful Portion:

According to sources I have spoken to this afternoon, the folks in Ann Arbor do not believe they are out on Harbaugh and are not prepared to move on to any sort of Plan B.
From what I have been told, U of M has lined up everything that Harbaugh’s people have requested to date including:
1) The money.
2) A say in the hiring of the permanent Athletic Director once Jim Hackett steps aside.
3) Administrative control.
4) Complete autonomy regarding disciplinary actions of players.
There has been no definitive response to U of M’s generous offer from the Harbaugh camp as of this writing which has led to a disagreement inside the Michigan Athletic Department. There is some internal debate regarding whether or not to give Harbaugh a deadline to make a decision.
Last night at the Michigan Football Bust in Livonia a meeting took place among the university’s mega donors and the prevailing thought was the odds of landing Harbaugh was still very good. Mainly because of the crap load of money they have earmarked to get the prodigal son to return to A2.
Sources also indicated to me that Hackett has played this perfectly with the [Jack] Harbaugh camp and there is nothing more he could do in his efforts to land Jim.
The big question now is whether or not to issue an ultimatum and how Jim would react to that potential “calling of the clock.” (Jeff Moss, Detroit Sports Rag)

I think part of the reason Hackett fired Hoke when he did was that he thought that was the right thing to do for Hoke.  I don't think that's the only reason, but it was a reason.  Another reason is that it was the right thing to do for the players.

There's really no rush.  What's going to happen between Sunday and the end of the year?  That's only 2 weeks, it includes Christmas and it's during a no-contact recruiting period.  Give the guy until the end of the season.  Once Jan 1 rolls around, you tell him you need an answer.

As others have said, it really depends on what we're hearing from other candidates. If we have reason to believe some won't be available after say, next week... we might need to get an answer. There's a chance Harbaugh's job status, wrt other NFL teams, wouldn't be resolved until late January or February... we cannot wait for him to test the waters.

Regner is a big time hockey guy in the Detroit market who also loves Michigan.  I am betting he has many of the same sources as Henson.  I dont know about Ross, I had never heard of him until a week ago and he seems to be "aggressive" on twitter towards almost everyone else in the media market.  Except Henson.

The whole point of his "Leaders eat last" speech was that he was planning to:

A) Coach out the season - and see how that turns out.

B) Take care of his Assisstants and support staff - get them jobs, or see they are taken care of.

C) Worry about getting a job himself.

I read that to mean that he will try to coach out the year, and get the 49ers into the playoffs, failing that, or when his season ends, make sure his Assisstants either come with him, or can get jobs they want, and then, choose where he wants to coach. An ultimatum might just be the thing to kill the whole deal, and would be a tragic mistake IMHO.

Right, he's just not the type to quit, even if they are eliminated from the playoffs. He is going to take care of his players and staff, and then worry about himself. And what's the rush? As of now, Michigan is the only big time job open. We don't have to worry about other candidates getting picked up by other schools. It's not like other coaches aren't already aware Harbaugh is our number one choice.

Obviously, everyone wants to have a coach in place and it would help in recruiting. But this needs to be the best hire possible. We need to put a stop to the downward trend of the past few years, and need someone to compete with Meyer. We can all wait a little longer to make sure it is done right.
