Afternoon Harbaugh Update (positive news)

Meaningful Portion:

According to sources I have spoken to this afternoon, the folks in Ann Arbor do not believe they are out on Harbaugh and are not prepared to move on to any sort of Plan B.
From what I have been told, U of M has lined up everything that Harbaugh’s people have requested to date including:
1) The money.
2) A say in the hiring of the permanent Athletic Director once Jim Hackett steps aside.
3) Administrative control.
4) Complete autonomy regarding disciplinary actions of players.
There has been no definitive response to U of M’s generous offer from the Harbaugh camp as of this writing which has led to a disagreement inside the Michigan Athletic Department. There is some internal debate regarding whether or not to give Harbaugh a deadline to make a decision.
Last night at the Michigan Football Bust in Livonia a meeting took place among the university’s mega donors and the prevailing thought was the odds of landing Harbaugh was still very good. Mainly because of the crap load of money they have earmarked to get the prodigal son to return to A2.
Sources also indicated to me that Hackett has played this perfectly with the [Jack] Harbaugh camp and there is nothing more he could do in his efforts to land Jim.
The big question now is whether or not to issue an ultimatum and how Jim would react to that potential “calling of the clock.” (Jeff Moss, Detroit Sports Rag)

I'm unsure of the validity of this guy even though he's been in on some recent happenings. The alarming portion of this information is the fact that the people in the AD have become "antsy" and are thinking of giving a time ultimatum if this in fact true. Can't these fuckers exercise some patience? This isn't a deision that's going to affect things in the short term. This will change everything for the next 7-15 years. Settle down children.

I find it kind of a desperate move to agree to all of that. he pretty much laying out for lack the coach/team exec dual role he would have in the nfl.

true but if he rebuffs after we met his demands, then we Michigan looks bad not Jim because he will still receive the power he seeks in the nfl. Can Michigan go through another bungled search where the can't even land the top choice after meeting his demands?

dont want to give him a clock to piss him off, but we kinda need one.  Fine line to walk.

Michigan: "So Jim, we need an answer by Christmas"

Jim: "No cant do it by then"

Michigan: "Ya that was a dumb date we agree....how about December 30th?"

Jim: "......"

Michigan: "ha ha ha just kidding, we meant January 1-30"

Jim: "Ok, I will be in touch.....maybe"

if Hackett has met all his demands and he still won't pull the trigger, what are you going to do?

I mean, we clearly want Harbaugh, but he has to want to come here.  If that story is true, I get a little worried.  Usually people who give lists of demands and then are still flakey even when the list is met were not expecting that their list of demands were going to be accepted.

Obviously you wait this out and see what happens when the Niners season ends, but geez, if Hackett is kissing the ring and it isn't good enough, there isn't much else he can do.

yeah, this bothers me as well. It starts to look like he's looking for an excuse to not come, so he can walk away without looking like he's let anyone down who was counting on him. Or he wants us in his back pocket as a plan B. Either way, it's shitty news for us and we shouldn't play his game by giving him an out to say "oh well, they gave me an ultimatum" but we also shouldn't sit around for the next 2 weeks with our thumbs up our asses

I want jim to come home as badly as anyone, but I have a hard time believing number 4.

"4) COMPLETE autonomy regarding disciplinary actions of players."

I don't know how feasible that is given the nature of things. I.e. Schlissel UNC gibbons and title ix. I don't think that harbaugh would necessarily abuse that power, but it could pose serious issues.

The 49ers have zero reason to fire Harbaugh in a week, with 2 weeks remaining in the season.   If Harbaugh decides to stay in the NFL he and the 49ers have to work out a trade to send him to another team.  That team will pay up with some form of draft picks.  So to fire Harbaugh would be punitive and hurt the 49ers if they have even a 1% belief he remains in the NFL.

But yes lets root for all these things - because it puts Jim officially into play Dec 29th rather than a potential playoff run.

So long as we are sure that we have a legit shot then I have no problem with waiting until shortly after the Niners season is over.

We should know one way or another by Jan 1 2015 which if we can't get Harbaugh still gives us time to hire Plan B and save some of the recruiting class.

hats off to hackett; sounds like he's doing everything right and giving us the best chance to land him!  much much better than the last run we made at JH and sounds like he has back up plans in place.  great job hackett!

In fact, that kind of language is a negotiation mistake.  We want to set Jim up for success and need to find out when we could expect an answer and if there is anything we could do in the meantime to help reach a positive outcome.

Hackett is a pro.  I'm sure  he understands the complexity and delicate nature of making this happen.

Put that coffee down!!!   Coffee is for Jim Hackett!

I think that you put out an offer to Harbaugh and move to your plan B adn C. If Harbaugh has not said anything  at the point that plan B is ready to sign, sign plan B.

has nothing to do with the Harbaugh demands, but rather the fact that mega donors are meeting to discuss timeline. I hope Hackett is not allowing them to have to much power. We need their money but not their difference of opinions to cause this whole thing to go south.

It's still there, as far I can see. Are you on a mobile device?

I'll check it for formatting issues and things like that. Sometimes, people leave open tags in HTML and it effs up a thread, or bad video code...things of that nature. If there's anything to be found, I'll try to fix it this evening.

Michigan cannot give Harbaugh "complete autonomy" when it comes to disciplinary actions regarding players. No school can, nor is it advisable.

Federal law requires the university to conduct its own investigation for certain transgressions, such as assaults and sexual assaults, regardless of any other investigation or the conclusions reached in any other investigation. The federal rules also control several aspects of how the university goes about taking action and there is no way any university president, much less an athletic department, can trump that.

It is the reason Florida State will soon face a massive civil suit -- they took two years to get theirs done on Jameis Winston.

Undoubtedly the coach can deal with any number of player transgressions on his own, but there are certain categories that will remain under the control of the university, with the same protocol applying to football players as they would to other students.

Is it possible that Jack and Jim Hackett know Jim's answer but have not communicated to anyone else in the AD to protect Harbaugh from questions and to honor his timing?

While I want a coach hired YESTERDAY, the reality is that there is no reason to rush.  Unless another top tier candidate on the Stoops/Payton level has definitively said they'll take the job AND that they will only take the job if they get it soon, then a Harbaugh ultimatum is just silly.

We are the last premier college job on the market.  We have no competition from other colleges, and no one in the NFL can sign Harbaugh without working out a deal with the 49ers.  There is no rush.

& Co.  are making JH a priority. . .none of the intrigue of the last seven years.  In other words, if Harbaugh doesn't come, it will be because Harbaugh didn't want the job.  No speculation as whether he was offered the job or not. . .
