FB, Slot & NB- Notice these positions are in italics. I realize you can't have 12 players on the field at once. This is my way of recognizing that. (Personally, I believe Shotgun, 3 WR, 2 RB will be our primary set along with the Pro Set formation).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FALL POSITION BATTLES...who wins?

  • #2 RB - Vincent Smith or Thomas Rawls?
(Vince, will definitely be the 3rd down back...so it's not most PT. Who starts in place of Fitz? Who's Fitz' sub on 1st and 2nd down? Who's the #2 RB?)
  • Freshman WR Battle - Amara Darboh or Jehu Chesson?
  • #1 LG - Elliott Mealer, Kyle Kalis or Joey Burzynski?
  • #1 WDE - Brennen Beyer or Frank Clark?
    (This is assuming Clark returns)
  • #2 NG - Richard Ash or Ondre Pipkins?
  • #2/#3 SDE - Nathan Brink or Keith Heitzman?
(This is #2/#3 because Pipkins or Washington could potentially come in at DT and Black could move to SDE)
  • #3 WLB - Antonio Poole or James Ross?
  • #2 MLB - Joe Bolden or Mike Jones?
(This isn't really a battle, Bolden pretty much won it in the spring, but it gives everyone a chance to say "WHO!?!")
  • #1 P - Matt Wile or Will Hagerup?

***Who do YOU have winning each battle???***

Most reports said that Kalis was possibly college ready as a HS senior, so another year should be good.  Now, he won't be a great college player yet, but it's very possible he's good enough to be the 5th best guy on our OL.

That said, I think people are too quick to overlook Chris Bryant.  He came in last year way too big, but has since lost a lot of that bad weight.  He was starting to get some good reviews during bowl practices, but seemed to take a bit of a step back in the spring when he wasn't mentioned much as the possible LG despite there not being a sure thing at that spot.

I'm hoping he's a guy who can step in and do some things this fall, since we need another OG, and we're losing at least one starter after this year.

I remember that position switch (or flip flop rather) came up a few months back.  I'm assuming it had a lot to do with the WR depth that we had the past few years no longer being there as well as incoming freshmen filling in the depth chart gaps we had at TE.  Hope he can transition back to WR smoothly because he sure had bulked up big time to get into TE playing shape last year.

Yes, he moved back to WR after apparently dropping his weight below 230, which is still a tad large but at least a potential redzone threat. I'm willing to bet he cuts another 5-10 pounds before the season starts and should be playing around Hemingway's weight with a couple extra inches in height.

see significant time. Joey B.wins the LG spot. Beyer had the spot even before Clark was suspended so it's still his. Pipkins as the #2. Brink as the #2 as well. Poole is injured so I'll take Ross. Bolden. Hagerup starts out as punter but Wile takes over.

I think you can move Vince Smith from 2a at HB to 1 at 3rd down back.

Edit:  I jumped the gun and didn't read your comments after the depth chart.  My bad.

Wow, we really have turned things around since two years ago...

Slightly nervous over the WR situation, but I like the wild card Devin Gardner in there.

I bet WR is better than people think.  We know what we have with Gallon and Roundtree, and that's two guys who are "good" at the very least.  Probably not stars, but certainly good receivers.  Then we have four guys - Gardner, Robinson, Chesson and Darboh who all have star receiver potential.  They won't all be, but one of them might be, or maybe 2 of them are also just "good."  And realistically, if you have four WRs who are starter-level guys, it's going to be a pretty strong group because a defense can't gameplan against any one guy.

I bet our receivers aren't very good.

Also, unless Denard has improved as a passer, it won't matter much.  Hemingway was our best receiver over the past couple seasons, and even he could only catch 34 passes or something like that last season.

All that really matters on offense is the running game.  If Denard/Toussaint/Rawls can get it going on the ground, we'll have a pretty good season.  If Toussaint misses time because of this legal issue and Rawls can't fill his shoes, we're going to struggle.

Other than Roy and Snoop we have 4 wild cards. J Robinson, DG, Darboh and Chesson. We know what we have with Jackson and Dileo. I feel like Dileo will be a nice target and utility player this year. While Jackson seems doomed to repeat his productivity.. Sorry Ricardo, I've lost faith that you will find your way..

Looking at that two deep our o-line is so thin. I just realized exactly how thin we were. Man we are so screwed if someone gets hurt for a lengthy period of time. I'd be like all sad and stuff. :(

WolvinLA2

July 30th, 2012 at 5:26 PM ^

I've thought about this.  We're only screwed if 2 guys get hurt.  I think we'll have at least one OL, could be Mealer, Kalis or Bryant, who are utility back-ups, much like Schofield last year.

Let's say the starting unit is Lewan, Mealer, Barnum, Omameh, Schofield.

If Lewan gets hurt, Schofield moves to LT and Kalis plays RT (or maybe Omameh moves to RT and Kalis plays RG).  If Mealer or Omameh get hurt, Kalis comes in for them.  Miller for Barnum, obviously.  It might be Bryant playing the Kalis role, or possibly Brzynski is he ends up being legit.

Two injuries though, and you're right. Big trouble in Little China.

We're probably screwed if Kalis (or any freshman) has to play.  I'm as high on Kalis as anyone, but freshmen on the OL are rarely positive things.  Especially if he starts AND we've got Mealer/Burzynski starting at left guard, that's probably two weak spots...and that's not to mention the oft-injured position changer Ricky Barnum at center.

My take on the battles:

Rawls.  He's gonna be a monster, might even take carries away from Fitz in certain situations.  I think we'll see a lot of him in games 2 and 3 and people will go "whoa."

Probably Darboh by a hair over Chesson, but mostly because frosh receivers do a lot of blocking, and Darboh is bigger by about 35lb.

Kalis at LG, Beyer at WDE, Pipkins at NT, but not by as much as people think.

Poole is out for the year so Ross at #3 WILL, for sure Bolden over Jones, Hagerup punts.

100% Rawls is going to split some facemasks this season. How did this kid not have 20 BCS offers? Also.. Kalis will take the lg job at halftime of the bama game and won't look back for 4 years.

I think the correct answer should be "the spring"...that's when he played his best.

Last season he just plowed into the back of OL at full speed ala Kevin Grady.

This spring his showed vision to follow his blocks and find the crease/holes/running lanes.

Am am curious why Hayes gets so little love both from the coaches and in these types of discussions.  If I recall, he had a pretty good amount of recruiting hype coming out, and was thought to be a big get.

Yes, he is a wee bit small, and may break if smashed, but I would figure that his speed / shiftiness would keep his name in the mix more.

Magnus

July 30th, 2012 at 8:48 PM ^

Kaleb Ringer tracked him down in the spring game.  I'm not convinced that Hayes is as lightning fast as some people hope.  He might be the reincarnation of Clarence Williams, but I don't think many of us are begging for a Clarence Williams clone.

(I'm not bagging on Williams.  He was a decent player on a good team, but he wasn't a superstar.)

Are there any other notable B1G freshman success stories at TE?  I can't think of any, but I am guessing there are some.  Funchess has said that the coaches told him they expect to play him, and soon.

MichFan1997

July 30th, 2012 at 6:57 PM ^

I think AJ Williams would play more than Funchess in a TE type role considering one guy is like 280 and the other is more like a large WR right now. That being said, would anyone be surprised to see Funchess play a little WR this year before he grows enough to be a TE? Does he have the skills to help out at WR?

As hopeful as I am about Gardner's potential as a game-breaking WR, If the coaches thought it was necessary to take snaps away from Denard to give Devin meaningful in-game snaps last season, then I doubt Bellomy will be apointed backup. Now, if several games into the season Devin is ahead of the curve and becoming a dominant WR, then I think Bellomy might have the chance to move up, but not to start out the season. Devin just has too much valuable experience to be third on the depth chart right off the bat IMO.
