5 Sane Reasons Not To Worry

Submitted by mejunglechop on

Someone called me one of the most depressing users on this board on the other thread, so maybe some of you will think this is coming from an unlikely source. But yeah, I can get down with optimism, here it goes:

1. Denard might be Percy Harvin with an arm!

There are so many reasons to be optimistic about Denard that I feel like I could do a top 5 list just about that, but I won't.  As good as Tate was last year, Denard has the tools to take this offense from good to mindblowingly awesome. Last year, Denard was extremely limited in what he was allowed to run. Mostly the coaches just had him run straight at the line, or roll out to hit bubble screens. There was no deception in how he was deployed. Denard wasn't even allowed to run the zone read, this offense's base play and a play call that, at least physically, plays to his strengths.

Fortunately Denard seems to have made progress at a breakneck pace. In the spring game (insert caveat here) wasn't just running the zone read, he was completing passes over the middle and sometimes even sitting in the pocket and letting the play develop. Whereas last year every throw of his seemed to fly out at 100 mph, in the spring game he showed a fair amount of touch on the ball. If Denard can be half as poised throwing in the season as he was in the spring game, this offense will open up and hit on all cylinders. Denard and co will dance around the opposition and light up the scoreboard like we've never seen at Michigan. Even better, if he continues to improve at this pace, in a few years we'll be comparing him favorably to Pat White.

2. Improved O line play!

All we lost were an adequate tackle and an adequate guard. We've got an extremely talented pool of youngsters fighting for their spots, led by Taylor Lewan and Patrick Omameh, both of whom have the potential to be four year starters. Others will push returning starters. Everyone has had an extra year to improve and this should be a very good and very deep group.

3. GERG is coaching all linebackers!

3 cheers for Jay Hopson being gone! Obi Ezeh and Jonas Mouton might be this year's Stevie Brown(s). All three were starters since at least their sophomore years who showed tremendous physical skills, but seemed unable to put it together mentally. For Brown, this was until his senior year, when he switched to an outside linebacker (kind of nickel corner) role from his safety position. GERG proceeded to turn him from mgowhippingboy to easily our best linebacker and an NFL draft pick. If Mouton and Ezeh make half the improvement Brown did our linebacking play will have gone from bad to fairly decent.

4. Molk is back!

David Molk proved his worth with his absence last year. When he got injured the offense took a major step back which they never recovered from. Hopefully with improved depth, any injuries will be weathered better this year, but Molk is good enough and important enough to this offense that his return should provide a shot of life either way.

5. (Relative) Continuity on defense!

So we're kind of switching to a 3-3-5, but at least we have the same coordinator for the first time since '07. That continuity extends at least to the coordinator's personal familiarity with the players and vice versa and that's gotta be worth something even if the scheme has changed amirite?

Bonus: 6. Turnovers!

We've had one of the worst turnover margins in the country in each of the last two years. If turnovers are as random as I'd like to think (and a lot of research shows) that has to change sooner or later.

What if I legally changed my name to Tate Denard?  Then I could argue it was Team Tate and Team Denard.  I think that's BS and I can make shirts with whatever on them as long as it's not copyrighted material.

I guess that makes sense, and in principal I agree. I'm just surprised that stuff extends to first names on generic products. In my mind a Michigan #5 jersy with Forcier on the back is one thing, a yellow tone tee shirt with Team Tate is another. Then again, my mind is a strange and often uncomfortable place similar to wonderland so, there's that.

Interesting. Thanks for helping me understand.

It'd be one thing if a bunch of us were just making shirts out of the back of a Pathfinder or something... if we raised the alarm, they'd simply come after us with a cease & desist and that'd be the end of it.  BUT... MGoStore belongs to Brian and UGP, each of whom has some official dealings with the university.  They have far more to gain by playing nice rather than awakening the dragon, so to speak.  So expect our shirts to dance around the rules rather than break 'em.

I keep putting more thought into this...and here's what I've got:

NCAA can't sell merchandise with athletes names because they can't make profits off of the players because they aren't under contract.  Basically...anyone can use the athlete's names any way that they choose to except schools and licensed merchandise because the schools are governed by NCAA regulations, which ford this, and licensed merchandise is under contract with the school, which....is governed by NCAA regulations.

Conclusion: you can make the shirts and no one can say or do anything to stop you*

While numerous position groups will improve this year, the secondary will get even worse (no Donovan Warren) and the D-line will at best remain stagnant (no Brandon Graham) and will probably get a bit worse. As such, the already poor passing defense looks to become a full-on disaster this coming season. As such, I think a winning record is a decent expectation.

I will under these encouraging conditions. Between your analysis and lfj75's examination of UConn's defense, things are really looking up--and nothing at all has really changed!

There's no way we're going to be able to go all season with Tate and Denard sharing QB duties. We need ONE solid QB. We're going to end up like MSU last year if we keep doing that.

In his defense, he didn't give a sample size, he gave an example. But in terms of a sample, one should not only include how many teams have had success or failure with a dual QB system, but how many started with such a system and then settled on one of those QBs. While there are examples of successful and unsuccessful dual QB systems, the fact that teams typically seem to settle on one, even before any demonstrable success or failure, speaks louder.

MSU averaged 29.69 pts/game (t-36th nationally) last season and 269.38 passing yds/game (28th nationally). Furthermore, they had a 145.01 Pass efficiency ranking (12th nationally). Both QB and the offense in general were not issues for them. MSU's issues came from one of the worst passing defenses in the country, as they were significantly worse than Michigan in that department.

is no way the defense can struggle as much as last year and dilithium's half life is still more than any of our opponent swill have.  Clearly we will go 13-0 and be cleared of any NCAA sanctions.

The big key on defense will be our LB play. We need to shut down the run!  I like our physical line and the fact we will get some pressure on the QB.  Secondary is young and may be a weak spot early on...but it will improve.

On the offensive side of the ball, I'm actually excited to see both Tate and DROB on the field this season. I can see both getting plenty of playing time. It will be interesting to see which RB may emerge as number 1 back as the season progresses, but I could see every back getting a lot action.
