you knew this was coming
limited size class - he's the 2nd Urban has pushed out - probably will be more
September 27th, 2016 at 9:59 AM ^
Baseless speculation, all.
Urban clearly pushed out this kid because he has a serial killer name.

Why would a pro style qb even be looking at OSU?
September 27th, 2016 at 9:56 AM ^
Grew up as a fan, always wanted to play for them despite the differences in styles, thought there would be room in the offense for his style of play, tons of reasons just none that really correlate to a realistic shot at playing time.

That is fair. Fandom sometimes blurs rational decision making. But if he went to OSU he'd be a backup his whole career. Sometimes that is enough but if you want to play as a pro-style kid OSU is not the place.
September 27th, 2016 at 11:24 AM ^
At some point in the near future, we'll get all the pro-style QB's because we'll be the only pro-style team left.
September 27th, 2016 at 9:56 AM ^
Did you read the tweet?
September 27th, 2016 at 10:01 AM ^
He hasn't progressed like he was expected after committing as a high school freshman to Urban Meyer. Clark was expected to be a 5-star QB and was hyped as the one of the top QBs in his class a couple years ago. He is a 3-star now. This situation is analogous to Erik Swenson except handled in a more timely manner.
September 27th, 2016 at 10:18 AM ^
Read the tweet.
OSU hasn't been a friendly place for pro style QBs since Krenzel in 2003.

a) It worked out okay for Cardale Jones, at least for a little while.
b) "Pro-style QB" is used loosely sometimes. Sometimes those guys can run, too. For example, Dylan McCaffrey is a pro-style QB, but he's also an adept runner and his brothers are running backs/receivers. You don't need to be an elite runner like Braxton Miller to run OSU's offense.
September 27th, 2016 at 10:36 AM ^
1) Cardale Jones is a total bust and everyone knows it. He isn't a "pro-style" qb he is a 6-5 250 pound Tebow esque QB. Basically a TE body that can throw.
2) You don't need to be a braxton miller but the other examples besides Barrett (Jones and Tebow) are all 250 pound bruising runners.
Who is an Urban Meyer QB that you could point to and say that is who I can emulate? Chris Leak? Alex Smith? Those guys are going back 10+ years. Meyer has evolved and pro-style qbs that aren't huge bodies don't fit.
Just my opinion but you could be a huge Michigan fan growing up but if you are a dual threat QB like Denard was I'd steer clear of UM if I wanted to play QB in college.
September 27th, 2016 at 10:37 AM ^
may be so, but Jones played flawlessly in their title run, and is in the NFL.
September 27th, 2016 at 10:43 AM ^
I'm not a Cardale fan, but this is a little unfair. He's got a WAY better arm than Tebow.

I'm not a Tebow fan but this is a little unfair. Tebow accomplished way more than Cardale has or probably will.
September 27th, 2016 at 10:55 AM ^
Somewhat fair, I will admit.

a) Cardale Jones won a national title. Maybe he's not an NFL starter, but Urban Meyer isn't an NFL coach. So I'd say he did okay with Jones.
b) Regardless of when it happened, Meyer ran his spread offense with Leak, Smith, Jones, and also recruited John Brantley to Florida. He also recruited Joe Burrow (another "pro-style" QB) to Ohio State.
The point is this: Just because a non-affiliated website like 247 Sports deems someone a "pro-style QB" doesn't mean he is indeed that thing. If that were the case, Brandon Minor and Obi Ezeh would have been fullbacks, Rashan Gary would be playing DT, etc.
September 27th, 2016 at 11:16 AM ^
Danny Clark isn't a 250 pound guy with a huge arm though. If he thought his playing style matched Cardale Jones he wouldn't be decommitting.
And Urban Meyer promptly resigned from the UF job after 1 season with John Brantley. He also recruited Cam Newton and who knows how his resignation would have played out if Newton hadn't of transferred.
I'm not going off of a websites designation of a 'pro-style' qb. Clark himself has said that his playing style doesn't match well with what OSU does offensively. I'm just saying that if you knew that you were a "pro-style" qb that OSU isn't a great fit for playing time. Maybe if he was a bigger fan he'd be fine running scout team for 4 years and wearing the jersey, being a part of the program. There are plenty of kids like that I'm sure. But if he wants to play then he should have probably never been looking at OSU in the first place.
September 27th, 2016 at 12:52 PM ^
is that Meyer told him a pro-style QB wouldn't fit in his system? I highly doubt it's a conclusion that Clark reached on his own.
September 27th, 2016 at 11:27 AM ^
I think Meyer may have recruited (and landed) Cam Newton at Florida. Correct me if i'm wrong, my memory is fuzzy on this
September 27th, 2016 at 11:32 AM ^
You could look it up on your laptop assuming Cam didn't throw it out the window of a Florida dorm
September 27th, 2016 at 11:55 AM ^
Cardale had a hot three game streak that won OSU a National Championship. Though his play after that was really disliked by most OSU fans. He wasn't a great descision maker or runner. The QB running is a major part of OSU's offense.
It's just not the same potent offense when the QB isn't a good athletic and elusive runner. OSU fans use to complain quite often about how Cardale didn't fit their offense.
September 27th, 2016 at 12:32 PM ^
Forgot what won them a championshi.cardale ran over several bama players, he ran good enough to keep the D honest. Meyer just tried too hard to get braxton miller involved.braxton would lose yardage in the wildcat then they expected cardale to bail out the offense on 3rd & 12. Not to mention entitled attitudes and a lot of partying on last years team. It was also the first year without tom herman running the offense as well.
September 27th, 2016 at 1:24 PM ^
I think it has to do with contrasting running sytles. Meyer was very successful with Tebow and he isn't an "elusive" runner. He was a power runner. But that same team had speedsters around to compliment him like Percy Harvin. At OSU, Hyde and Elliot were the power runner and he used the QB (Miller and to an extent Barrett) as the speedster compliment. Jones wasn't a speedster.
September 27th, 2016 at 3:44 PM ^
I agree. Tebow was a great power running QB in Urban's offense. Though as much as he runs the QB, having one with speed to breakaway for a touchdown, makes it the most dangerous.
September 27th, 2016 at 10:56 AM ^
I think Harbaugh's use of Kaep would be pretty enticing for dual threat QBs as well. If you are a really good QB, regardless of your "style", not playing for Harbaugh would be a huge mistake.
September 27th, 2016 at 12:09 PM ^
Kaep is an NFL QB, Denard is not. There are plenty of kids who are dual threat college QBs but aren't NFL QBs. Kids like that probably won't play QB for Harbaugh IMO. Denard Robinson, Julian Edelman, and Antwaan Randle El to name a few.
There are even rumors that Denard chose Michigan becasue Urban wanted him to play corner back at UF. It is hard to believe that Harbaugh would look at Denard and see a QB.
September 27th, 2016 at 1:49 PM ^
If I was being coached by Tom Herman and Urban Meyer (two of the 10 best coaches in CFB), I probably would've turned out ok. Like not only was that talent unreal, the coaching staff was superb.
September 27th, 2016 at 11:40 AM ^
He committed the one year they had Fickell (as a freshman in high school), Meyer honored the commit up until the greyshirt request.

anyone know what the OSU class size is expected to be?

17-19, last I heard.

Birm and those in the know are saying low 20s
September 27th, 2016 at 12:14 PM ^
I have some ties to people "in the know" who all tell me that the staff absolutely loves Simmons. One of my best sources told me that they feel he's the steal of the class. I would be VERY surprised if Simmons isn't in this class, and if he's not, it's more likely because you guys came in with a great late push, not him being pushed out.
September 27th, 2016 at 3:57 PM ^
I haven't heard anything about us recruiting Simmons or him having any interest in us. Simmons's future seems to be at either LB or RB. We're full on the RB side, with the only guys being recruiting are swing for the fences guys like Najee Harris. On the LB side, we're in on a lot of guys and haven't heard his name among them.
Simmons would have been a nice addition to the class, but it never felt like the staff prioritized him the way that OSU did, so I can understand why he's going there.
September 27th, 2016 at 12:56 PM ^
He seems to place a high value on getting recruits from Michigan. i think that's a good strategy, forcing us to work hard to defend our backyard.
September 27th, 2016 at 9:55 AM ^
a player they probably didnt need will get replaced by a "higher regarded" position player. Sucks for the kid but it probably helps their class overall.

No duhhhhhh.
