This game happened on 10-12-1985. Harbaugh started all 12 games that year. Our only loss that year was a 12-10 loss to Iowa. Our last win over Sparty was in 2012, and we won 12-10.

There really is something magical about the number 12 and Saturday's game...

Here is my worry for the game Saturday, and this is a little off-topic but I'll bring it back around:

I'm not worried about the outcome. We are going to win. We are going to get State's best game they've played all year and we will still win about as comfortably as double digits. They just won't be able to move the ball on us, save for a big play or two. Their running backs are nothing special without their OL at full strength. They will have guys playing at 60% against the best stunting DL in the world. JD will shut down Burbridge, after him no one is worrying. Cook is fluctuates so much that when we get pressure on him he certainly won't look like a 1st rounder. On offense we will score enough to win. I think we will use the pass to set up the run, like how we gouged OSU in 2013. Their circus of a secondary will be lost, then we will show them run fits they haven't seen from us yet (Jim has done this every week, this isn't special for Sparty - feel disrespected Mike Dantoni?), then in the 4th quarter when they are tired from chasing us downfield we will get easy push on the line to salt away the game. I like us to win 24-13.

My worry for this weekend is injury/cheap shots. You know what kind of program they run, you know how Dantonio coaches, you know the kids he recruits. Dantonio knows that we are very good and he knows that if we come out and take care of them that they go back to being an after thought in the state, despite all of the great work he has done there. He also knows that if he can knock Rudock out we would be in trouble on offense. He knows that if he can sideline Lewis or Peppers they can attack vertically easier. I wouldn't be surprised to see some knee-diving in the first quarter, some real shady cuts. In relation to the topic of this thread, if we come out and steam roll them like we did BYU and NW (both of whom would beat Sparty), I'd bet the farm on things getting real chippy and dirty from them.

So that's my take on the "rivalry" game. Sorry if this wasn't the thread for it. For a while now they have beaten talent with coaching. Now we have the edge in both categories and they're gonna take drastic measures to stay on top. It's what they are want to do. If you're the religious type, pray, as I will be doing, for BOTH teams to come away from this game completely healthy. Mantis had to get real for a second, please resume your regularly scheduled Hate Week activities.

Harbaugh's arm was broken by Sparty with a cheap shot in 1984, sentencing Michigan to a half of a season with Chris Zurbrugg at the helm.  Forcier, Robinson and Gardner were all hit by numerous cheap shots by Sparty during the Dantonio era, and all were affected to some extent over the rest of their careers.  Sparty's first "mission" is always to injure Michigan's QB.

I am hoping for a victory and for Rudock to come out healthy.  Anything else will be a bonus. And you can bet your ass that Harbaugh remembers what it was like and is aware that Sparty is even dirtier now than they were in the 1980's.

A side note about that game. It wasn't a spectacular day for Harbaugh. He threw three interceptions that game. But this was the Schembechler years, where you could turn the ball over multiple times against State and still win with relative ease 9 times out of 10.

I didn't include it in those highlights but right before halftime, we put about a 70 yard drive together and had 1st & goal from the 8 yard line when Harbaugh threw his second pick. Bo was absolutely furious on the sidelines until Jim walked up to him and he instantly calmed down, put his hands on his shoulder and gave him a pep talk. He didn't humiliate him and rip him to shreds like that purple faced a*shole in South Bend. He was the man.

As for this Saturday? I'll take any win as long as it's a win. I don't see State playing as poorly as they did the last 4 weeks simply because of the rivalry. It's going to be a tough and nerve wrecking game.

Seriously. They have definitely kicked our butts recently, but payback is needed in full force. If there is ever a game I want Harbaugh and his team to just annihilate and embarrass, it's this one. I'm so fucking sick of MSU. Losing to OSU is one thing and expected sometimes (though two wins since 2003 is unacceptable), but losing to MSU as much as we have recently is extremely unacceptable. There is no reason we should not beat them three out of every four meetings.

Sam Webb saw this on Twitter and made a funny reply. Something like, "Harbaugh must have thought he was living in the twilight zone during these recent games with MSU."

I was a senior in high school. My English teacher (who was a Michigan alumna) asked everyone to guess the final score on the Friday before the game. Most students picked MSU, but a few had U-M winning a tight game.

I predicted the most points by Michigan, with a 35-17 final score. Since no one correctly guessed, she gave out two awards:

  • Most lopsided prediction: 45-0 MSU (to a MSU slappy, of course)
  • Most points scored by Michigan: Me

With that as a history lesson and in honor of the 30th anniversary of my victory and Michigan's, I'll reprise my prediction:

  • 35 U-M 17 MSU

I'm sure Harbaugh has instilled that they won't be given anything Saturday, and it will likely be the most physical game they have played up until that point and arguably the most physical game they'll play all year.  I want them to be angry Saturday.  I hope they've watched the past films of us getting our asses kicked up and down the field.  As my high school coach once told me "be a controlled maniac out there."

I don't just want to win, I want Michigan to beat the absolute shit out of Michigan State, and I want Ace to gif every snaggle-toothed scowl from their coach as they do it.  And then I want the most incredibly awkward and intense handshake of all time to top it off.

Michigan to shutout BYU or NU and these offenses seem to be more dynamic than states offense! So, I won't be surprised if the defense shuts out state. That would be great to whip them 45-0!

Cheap shots, yeah there will be some cheap shots, there will be 60 minutes of what State calls "necessary roughness."  Unlike last year, we don't need to cower in fear of our players getting killed on the field   We now have confident players with proven ability PLUS Harbaugh will be in everybody's face if they pull some BS.

^^ Agree completely. After the BYU game, there was a thread about how many of BYU's players were injured in the Michigan game. Maryland and Northwestern players also seemed to have a lot of injuries the past two weeks. Michigan has the confidence and strength to beat this team into submission and the Harbaugh to keep the officiating honest

I don't care if it's a shutout. Don't care if we win by 1 or 100. Just win.

These guys have owned us in every sense of the word over the past few years. It's time for swift retribution.

I don't hope for injuries for anyone, but I hope Cook gets beat into the ground multiple times that day. I hope we give that whole team a taste of their own medicine.
