2022 Season T-Shirts Revealed
I knew we'd be in for a letdown after last year's absolute bangers, but these are actively lame IMO.
(Photo got screwed up in OP for whatever reason)
This is what you get when you do graphic design in Microsoft Excel.
It's impressive how consistently mediocre these shirts always are
I'm envisioning a production budget of something like $0.025 per shirt.
Agreed.
Also should mention that as far as I saw, we (students) never got to vote on preliminary designs like in past years.
I think there was one year in undergrad where they sent out a Google Form poll but all the options were mediocre
God I hate everything Michigan does with yellow -- er, maize -- as the dominant color. Don't get me wrong -- I love our colors. But, being as I am over 10 years old, I can't imagine wanting to wear a bright yellow *anything*. Let's go back to blue, please?
(I know, it's about the Maize-outs, I guess. Eh. Get off my lawn).
Wait, you're telling me you're older than 10 and recognize thar we do maize outs?? Please tell the rest of people in the expensive seats who can't seem to figure that out! $1,500/ ticket and the best they can do is free pom-pom.
See, those people in the pricey seats are creatures of taste and they recognize that yellow just isn't their color. (It's not a good color on 80% of the people in the stands even if it "pops" on TV.)
I hear 'ya. But it's a lot easier to wear Maize t-shirts or sweatshirts when the weather is warmer. When the weather is cold, no one wants to sit in the stands wearing that, and no one wants to buy maize colored heavy coats which they won't wear anywhere else.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and move that we change our second color to the pantone maize, different from either the Nike or Adidas "maizes," which has sometimes been discussed here. When I stare at them on the internet, that's the one that looks like I might be willing to put on.
But it's true, having said that, that other than under a blue dress shirt, which I sometimes have resorted to, I am not often keen to turn myself into a highlighter.
I wear maize all the time -- it pops.
So they basically do Stock Image on the front and Calendar on the back. It took less than $20 worth of thought to conceive, I'm not paying that much for the finished product.
Last Friday afternoon somewhere inside the Michigan marketing department sometime around 4:30pm.....
"Have a good long weekend guys. Anybody going anywhere fun?"
"Naw, just hanging around town this year. No big plans - you?"
"Pretty much the same. Maybe a cookout or something with the In-laws. Hey, before I forget - when are we suppose to have the design finished for this year's football t-shirts?"
"Oh shit - I think soon. I TOTALLY forgot about this one. Let me check. Oh fuck - it's Tuesday."
"Well I'm sure as hell not hanging out here this weekend to work something up. Let's just put a helmet on the front and the schedule on the back and call it a day."
"That works - everybody loves the helmet and the schedule"
"See ya Tuesday - have a great long weekend!"
I'm actually mildly impressed it still only costs $20.
Honestly, I'm ok with this. This is a cheap college / car-washing / yard-work T-shirt. I wouldn't be looking for high quality or something to even wear to a game. Just a nice Saturday-outdoors kind of shirt to get me through the summer. Price it accordingly, and you're in business.
Edit: not priced accordingly. I was thinking it was a $7.95 special with the purchase of 2 cokes.
Graphic design was not their passion.
This shirt sucks man. Mden has had some really bad designs recently
It’s the t-shirt equivalent of how February felt for the football program. It’s all good - let’s go get on the field and remind everybody that we are back baby!
Couldn't they have challenged some of the students who've taken the Graphic Design course in the university's School of Information to come up with a better design for that shirt?
I don't mind wearing Michigan gear with yellow as the primary color, but this latest design isn't something that I'd wear. Now, THIS one's still a regular in my wardrobe when it comes to supporting the MAIZE and BLUE.
“who've taken the Graphic Design course in the university's School of Information”
Or take the radical step of involving students studying graphic design for several semesters in U-M’s art school.
This points to the real issue here--school full of creative people, let's make a f'ing interesting t-shirt! Why something so dreadfully generic?
There’s a lot of talented students at Michigan they could’ve likely gotten free labor and a better design out of for this shirt but they chose not to for whatever reason
The season tees when I was in school were made by adidas and then Jordan. Is that no longer the case? $20 for some cotton Gildan tee is a rip off
Meh. Fine with a blah choie. An unappealing season t-shirt is unlikely to cut into the market for NIL products that get money tp players
Nothing to see here. Move along.
The scale of the "2022 MICHIGAN FOOTBALL" as compared to the helmet is ridiculously off. And one typeface and weight for the whole shirt front and back? I know this is student work, but yeessh.
but these are actively lame
The design is spot on then... lame matches the OOC schedule.
Make it a student design t-shirt contest each year, and i'm sure we'll end up with something a bit more fresh.
last year's absolute bangers,
Last year’s shirts were the furthest thing from “bangers”. They were as bland and uninspiring as this year’s design.
You might not like them, but these at least had SOME character to them. Definitely not as uninspired as this one.
If by character you mean making the big house look like an old wooden roller coaster at Cedar Point, then sure.
I will admit that the schedule on the back is nicely done though. The ticket stub design is classy.
This shirt design is unimaginative and looks like someone spent very little effort on it. Not worthy of the U-M football program in my opinion. If you want to generate enthusiasm and sales, make the shirt design really cool and not a boring reproduction of past designs. Not good Bob.
And not great either Bob.
I actually kind of like it.
FWIW, long, long ago, these shirts were student-designed and then voted on. Then the Athletic Department decided to go professional. IIRC, the first year they did that, there had already been a student design selected, I knew the guy who drew it. Constant downhill slide ever since.
I am sure it was his idea....
Guess who is back at Dominos?!?!?!?!

Now I know why petsmart has shit the bed...horrible customer service, filthy, run-down stores, all the wrong inventory in stock...
I, too, am over the age of 10 and I like yellow for away games. It stands out in the crowd. A blue t-shirt could be anyone, but yellow says you’re cheering for Michigan (unless you’re in Iowa City).
feel free to mention reigning big ten champs, or anything at all to peacock 2021's success whatsoever. what a failed opportunity.
Totally agree. They have the "43" helmet sticker that I assume references it, but it shouldn't be that subtle.
Do we have any known friends and trusted agents that do graphic design because yikes.
Have to be honest I kind of like them better than last years. Wasn't last year the "welcome to the big house" or "back to the big house" ones? I mean I get it, back from covid and all but other than that looked rather generic as well.
I kind of like the retro-ish feel to these although not sure if that is just how I'm seeing it and maybe it won't have a vintage / retro look in real life.
I kind of use these as workout or "drinking beer by the bonfire shirts after doing a metric ton of yard work" shirts so I'm rather indifferent.
I'm not a student anymore, but I don't feel like I ever remember Michigan having a student football shirt that I actually liked. At least not since I was in school. I remember the 2009 season shirt having the "Michigan Football Pledge" on it. It induced at least a handful of eye rolls from me every time I saw it. Hardly ever wore itSomething about it just reeked of desperation.
This shirt just completely lacks any semblance of creativity. Looks like the Design team really just phoned this in.
2006 ("Go Blue Wear Maize") is my favorite hands-down...
