2020 Season Hot Takes

Submitted by Dennis on September 17th, 2020 at 5:51 AM

My hot take is that Cade will be QB1 for at least half of the 8 game 2020 season.

What's your hot take (or seemingly least sensible prediction) regarding this season?

Well, considering the defenses have all been really good, it may not be that hot. Having said that, the biggest weakness last year, interior DL, is almost surely significantly better. I think the D will be very good as long as the CBs can hold up. Ambry was maybe our biggest loss actually. It would really help if Dax Hill is a big playmaker. I also feel good about the new hires and Don Brown diversifying his zone game.

Not terribly hot, but I was surprised to see how many people think Mayfield is our biggest loss out of him, Nico, Ambry, and McCaffrey. I'd put him 4th on that list actually. Sure he could have been great, but the OL has lots of bodies with lots of experience. They won't be great, but I'd be absolutely shocked if the tackle position is a mess. The WR corps isn't nearly as deep as some people seem to think. Lots of young promising talent, but it's still really inexperienced outside of Bell, and Nico was probably doing a lot of work for the other guys by stretching the field. Gray is now the best returning CB and he was fine but hard to see him being great. I'm also not optimistic about a really good 2nd and 3rd corner stepping up. It doesn't seem like McCaffrey left solely because of the depth chart, especially this early. So, Milton may be very good, but at best that still leaves Michigan terribly thin at QB.

While I do agree with you, it still doesn't make sense to me. Why not stay and get reps and use the resources at the school with the potential of getting playing time?

The only thing I can think of is Covid, but his brothers are both playing and usually that kind of mentality is a groupthink within the family. Any thoughts to add?

Harbaugh doesn’t ever say who is going to be the starter but I wouldn’t be surprised if Dylan was being outplayed and Milton was getting most of the first team reps and Dylan saw the writing on the wall. There were reports that he wasn’t even locked up for the backup job and was still competing with Cade for 2nd string. I would take a NFL level lineman on a line replacing every single other starter over a backup quarterback but to each his own.

All the reports said Steuber was neck and neck with Mayfield last year before Steuber got hurt. You don't think Michigan has any more NFL level talent on the OL? It's not that I don't think Mayfield would have been very good, I'm just confident that his replacement isn't going to be that much of a downgrade. Whoever wins a starting OL job this year may not be an All-American, but no position is a win by default, even with all the starters gone. If McCaffrey saw the writing on the wall already, Milton should be a Vince Young-level talent.

It's also a really weird comment when you say below that you think Milton will be very inconsistent.

I don’t doubt Stueber is a good player but it’s all about continuity. Mayfield is our best O-linemen and closest thing to a sure thing of all of our linemen. In regards to the last comment, Milton will likely be inconsistent considering it’s his first year starting, but it seems he was noticeably better than Dylan in the coaches eyes. He’s more physically gifted than any Harbaugh QB since Luck imo. Not as worried about backup QB as I am about a brand new O-line especially because of talk that Cade was in a battle for the backup job with Dylan.

Just gonna make this a reply instead of one mass wall of text. Connelly's S&P+ really values returning receiving experience. It's actually the best indicator of an offense's potential for next year. Giles Jackson had 142 yards last year. Sainristil had 145. Johnson had 61 (and like 40 of that was his near walk-in TD against MSU). Henning is a true freshman. Our biggest hope should be that it's year 2 for Gattis and the system as a whole is humming quite well, even if there's a lot of guys in new, much bigger roles.

Right, so that makes one productive returning starter. That's not good actually. Hence my point that I'd take Nico back over Mayfield. Of course, the OL has 0 starters, but we have more bodies and years in the system at OL than WR. I'm not saying the WRs will be bad, or Milton will be bad, I'm just slightly less concerned about losing Mayfield than the others.

If we had so much returning experience last year we wouldn't have given true freshmen so much run. If you look at the 2018 receiving stats, we had Nico and DPJ, that was about it for significant returners. Both had fewer than 700 yards in 2018. They were the only returning starters with over 500 yards receiving. That's not bad, but I wouldn't call that a ton of returning experience.

- minimum of 3 games will be cancelled.  one B10 team will cancel it's season completely. chaos shall rule, nevertheless football will still be played.

-  we'll have a surprise linebacker, a young one, really shine this year.

- mgocamping trip will be at darker blue's place given all the acres he owns.  and even though he said we should stay off his lawn, deep down he's a softie and wants us to hang out.

The football season will be interrupted by at least one COVID outbreak, the bubonic plague, swarms of locusts, livestock pestilence, water turning to blood right on the field and unprecedented sunspots intermittently wiping out electronic communication.

Despite all that games will be played, a champion crowned and revenue revenued.
