2017 Signing Day (evening open thread)

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

An eventful day to say the least!

The morning and afternoon open threads were both caught in the nuke that hit MGoBlog this afternoon reverting us back to yesteryear.

This should hold us over for the rest of the night.

I thought 2017 was to be a rebuilding year, at least that was the word before the 2016 season. Now that the season is over and we know what we have coming back, then looking at this list I'm thinking reload...

covered every position well

I would 2018 needs would be:

1 Stud TE

1-2 Stud RB's

3-4 Stud OL

and then just stud players

how many spots we gonna have?  max on the 25/year would be 25 but min would be 8?  We don't lose many

Right now I believe UM has 19 5th-year and Seniors in 2017. That # could change if a 5th year still doesnt come back. Right now UM is 2-over the 85 so we should see a little attrition..somewhere. So right now probably 17-20ish, but could probably grow.

There are 9 seniors on the depth chart for next year. Ther are another 11 juniors who will be finishing their 4th year next year, and of those I see 7 that could potentially be candidates to not get a 5th year. I don't think all 7 will be gone obviously as there's plenty of open competition for some of these guys to cement a 5th year.

If you say 4/5 end up leaving, that gives you 14/15 spots to work with. Between transfers and other stuff popping up, my guess is we see a class of between 18-20 next year.

Yes btw low seniors and # of guys not offered 5th yrs I see about 15. Then you will have washout or guys who want to play like a Malzone type. Gentry if he doesn't break through this yr is a candidate to move on, think someone claimed here Kingston davis might be looking elsewhere. You have guys like Keith Washington etc who could go if they don't get playing time. Etc. So its probably 18-20 in the end. We need to be judicious in how we go about this especially with what appears to be the first early signing period coming

With the way things have been going, it seems like taking at least a couple of defensive linemen every year would be wise.  With this kind of defense, I think a lot of players may be leaving early and you have to keep the pipeline full.

I'm gonna make a bold prediction and say Andrew Stueber ends up being a star LT. Seems like he has all the tools and his lowish ( though he was moved to 4-star status by three of the sites) status seems based more on the competition he faced.

Agree Stueber might be a dark horse of the recruits. Has size and athletic ability. With Michigan spreading out defenses and using quicker backs, I believe a guy who can move his feel is more important than a guy who can pancake guys at tackle. A masher or two inside will be good for short yardage but I like the potential of Michigans 2 best tackles this year.

The only "Man, we shoulda had that guy" kid is Willie Gay, and our linebacking core is still incredible without him. Singleton and Anthony were both more highly rated, and Ross is Ross and needs no other qualitfication.

These coaches are going to try anyway. If they see a guy that good and he's a perfect fit for the scheme they're going to go all out. I appreciate that mentality if we're more likely than not to get a head scratcher MSU (NTMSU) type decision. Especially if it's not at the cost of bringing in a ridiculous position group if they miss on the guy like with LB this year.

So how long before we get an updated projected depth chart from you??? I'm only kidding obviously. It's awesome to see how well this class came together. Harbaugh and staff deserve to be praised for doing some incredible things in this class. Pulling Solomon out of Georgia after he decommits, two players from the state of Alabama, and 1 from Texas. Sure there were some misses here and there but overal this class is A+ IMO. The 2017 Wolverines may be a young team but they will sure be a damn fun one to watch.

Really grinds my gears that we hit on the two guys we wanted most on signing day and still drop in the rankings. We have 18(!!) top 300 guys depending on who you talk to (record on espn is 20 for bama) yet that isn't good enough. Doesn't matter anyways because it makes no difference for the quality of our class, but still.

Would you have rathered hit on zero of the guys we most wanted and moved up a spot?

Who cares at this point. If you're not #1, you're trying to be top 5, fill needs, and bring in as many playmakers as possible.

Like I said in another thread...the key is 4 top-5 classes in a row. Do that and you're an elite program contending for a national championship.
