Title says it all.

A lot of thoughts and commentary around this tournament. Reminder, no politics.

Exactly this, according to FIFA it was all agreed to and Qatar had agreed to having alcohol available at the venues.

More to the story is that is what FIFA says happened, but FIFA could easily just be doing a CYA by saying reverse themselves after initially agreeing to it. FIFA wouldn't come right out and say they messed up by holding it in a country that wasn't suitable for visiting fans, they would take every last bit of money they got above and below the table and let the fans deal with it.....and they certainly wouldn't make people aware of it until their trips were bought and paid for and only a few days away.

All I'm really saying is that it is a shitty situation and hard to know who messed up, especially when it could be both Qatar and FIFA.

Ab-so-fucking-lutely.

They're wearing maize, so "that" is why I want them to win by a million. Blue numbers as well. They're rocking the Speight/Winovich/Bush color rush combo against Florida in Jerry's World. We tried to wear those again @PSU last year but they made wear white jerseys.

(and Qatar is closer to that god awful scarlet...so there is that as well)

Unironically- I've been an Ecuador fan since the 2006 world cup.  Our spanish class took a trip to Quito/Galapagos- unfortunately we were only in Ecuador for the 2 games they lost (v. Germany and to a Beckham free kick in Ro16).  I've been following them loosely since then and was really pumped they qualified this year.

The Qatari national anthem slapped.

Look for all the South American teams to do well in this World Cup in this climate.

Holy shit this Qatari keeper is a hot mess.

Ecuador looks like a fun bunch!

For those more soccer knowledgeable than I am, which rosters feature the best depth on the bench?  I realize that's an odd question but I read that they are allowing 5 subs in Qatar, and I'm thinking midseason world cup plus warm day weather might play outsized roles.

Why would talking about what you are referring to be an example of politics lol. It isn’t a secret - even blatter himself finally admitted how insanely stupid / extortionist this is. The only people who are defending it either live there or are Twitter bots.

Qatar looked completely overmatched against Ecuador, who is probably the worst South American team in the tournament. Netherlands and Senegal should smoke them.

Big time matches start tomorrow with Netherlands-Senegal and the two Group B matches.

No politics?! Anybody with the audacity to post this knows exactly what they are doing.

Sorry but I'm gonna go ahead and hope that slavery isn't protected here.

This entire Qatar - Fifa situation has been wrought with TERRIBLE human rights violations.

Please, please do NOT support this, don't watch it, don't give it anything positive.

FIFA and its World Cup organization need to be replaced by a more transparent, rule-based organization rooted in fairly representing the interests of world soccer’s major stake-holders, namely, the fans and the players.  Fans and players need to be the focus of any sports organization in order to insure their mutual interests are served.  Other interests, such as country politics, media profits, etc. should not be the driving force in world soccer decision-making.
