WHERE THE FUCK IS MY BEER
-- every attendee in the stands
November 20th, 2022 at 11:33 AM ^
With me, you told me to "Hold my Beer".
November 20th, 2022 at 11:53 AM ^
They talk big.
November 20th, 2022 at 12:20 PM ^
Cannot believe they pulled that kind of bait and switch, although between Qatar and FIFA, tough to know who to trust and whether or not there is more to the story.
November 20th, 2022 at 2:28 PM ^
What's more to the story? Qatar is a Muslim majority country and they don't get down with alcohol. It's not surprising that do not want alcohol at their stadiums. That should have been factored into whether or not Qatar should be allowed to host, but I guess corruption got in the way.
November 20th, 2022 at 2:41 PM ^
Qatar signed a contract agreeing to FIFA's requirements of selling alcohol in stadiums. Serves them right for giving a World Cup to a country that didn't have the infrastructure or stadiums to host.
November 21st, 2022 at 10:04 AM ^
Exactly this, according to FIFA it was all agreed to and Qatar had agreed to having alcohol available at the venues.
More to the story is that is what FIFA says happened, but FIFA could easily just be doing a CYA by saying reverse themselves after initially agreeing to it. FIFA wouldn't come right out and say they messed up by holding it in a country that wasn't suitable for visiting fans, they would take every last bit of money they got above and below the table and let the fans deal with it.....and they certainly wouldn't make people aware of it until their trips were bought and paid for and only a few days away.
All I'm really saying is that it is a shitty situation and hard to know who messed up, especially when it could be both Qatar and FIFA.
November 20th, 2022 at 11:05 AM ^
Wow. What a start and what a goal.
November 20th, 2022 at 11:07 AM ^
Wow, offside and the goal is disallowed.
November 20th, 2022 at 11:22 AM ^
The fix is so blatantly in. This wasn't even close to being offside. With all of the corruption associated with Fifa and Qatar I wouldn't put match fixing past them as well.
That said. They just awarded a penalty to Ecuador, so maybe it's just good old fashioned incompetece on the offside.
November 20th, 2022 at 11:44 AM ^
I'm not sure I understand.
It looked pretty clear to me, not a traditional sense. But with the technology they have and by the letter of the law...he was offsides when they showed it.
November 20th, 2022 at 11:07 AM ^
Qatar gonna get crushed today
November 20th, 2022 at 11:09 AM ^
Qatar is trash. I hope they lose every game 400-0.
November 20th, 2022 at 11:18 AM ^
Didn't they play us pretty tough in the Gold Cup final a few years back?
November 21st, 2022 at 4:32 AM ^
We beat them in then semi-final. We played Mexico in the final.
November 20th, 2022 at 11:10 AM ^
Title says it all
Why do posters write this, and then go on to say more?
November 20th, 2022 at 11:13 AM ^
Because it can be interpreted as "title says all you need to know."
Meaning anything that comes after isn't necessarily critical to understanding what this thread is about.
Hope that helps! 😁
November 20th, 2022 at 11:15 AM ^
It doesn't
November 20th, 2022 at 11:15 AM ^
Sounds like a personal problem then.
November 20th, 2022 at 11:10 AM ^
No politics -- hmmmmm. Can I say looking forward to seeing Qatar being crushed because of my long-term engagement with and fandom of Ecuador?
November 20th, 2022 at 11:15 AM ^
Ab-so-fucking-lutely.
They're wearing maize, so "that" is why I want them to win by a million. Blue numbers as well. They're rocking the Speight/Winovich/Bush color rush combo against Florida in Jerry's World. We tried to wear those again @PSU last year but they made wear white jerseys.
(and Qatar is closer to that god awful scarlet...so there is that as well)
November 20th, 2022 at 11:57 AM ^
Or just go ahead and say that 1,000 Nepali and Phillipino dead and limited women's and other human rights etfuckingcetera is enough to sway you, subtly, to back the Nanos.
November 20th, 2022 at 1:46 PM ^
Unironically- I've been an Ecuador fan since the 2006 world cup. Our spanish class took a trip to Quito/Galapagos- unfortunately we were only in Ecuador for the 2 games they lost (v. Germany and to a Beckham free kick in Ro16). I've been following them loosely since then and was really pumped they qualified this year.
November 20th, 2022 at 11:21 AM ^
PK Goal Ecuador in the 17th minute.
November 20th, 2022 at 11:22 AM ^
The Qatari national anthem slapped.
Look for all the South American teams to do well in this World Cup in this climate.
Holy shit this Qatari keeper is a hot mess.
Ecuador looks like a fun bunch!
November 20th, 2022 at 11:27 AM ^
For those more soccer knowledgeable than I am, which rosters feature the best depth on the bench? I realize that's an odd question but I read that they are allowing 5 subs in Qatar, and I'm thinking midseason world cup plus warm day weather might play outsized roles.
November 20th, 2022 at 11:30 AM ^
I knew the overall rosters were bigger going from 23 to 26, didn't know about subs going from 3 to 5.
I'd have to assume that helps the favorites and traditional powerhouse countries.

Finished it last night, a solid watch...didn't share too much of what most don't already know, but provided a great bit of detail and insight on stories fans of international soccer probably remember.

FIFA "out-corrupting the Olympics since the dawn of time and proud of it"
November 20th, 2022 at 11:33 AM ^
Wow, Valencia again!!
November 20th, 2022 at 11:34 AM ^
Goal Ecuador!!
Valencia again, he's got 2 + 1 that was disallowed.
I remember him from Brazil. He's having himself a night!
November 20th, 2022 at 11:41 AM ^
Ahhh...the flailing at every foul. It's officially World Cup time.
LeBron must LOVE watching the South American teams.
November 20th, 2022 at 5:54 PM ^
Im glad you added the South American part. Many non soccer fans assume all teams play like bitches but its really just a South American (and Ronaldo) thing. And I say this as a huge Argentina fan. You rarely see that garbage in MLS or the EPL.
November 20th, 2022 at 11:47 AM ^
there's gonna be 45 minutes of stoppage time ..

It's the week of The Game. Soccer? We're talking about soccer?
November 20th, 2022 at 12:42 PM ^
not The Game, not The Game, soccer.

Love the WC, as always "xenophobia at its best"!
November 20th, 2022 at 12:17 PM ^
Am I hearing "Pump it up" through the TV. I didn't know it was a worldwide thing.
November 20th, 2022 at 12:45 PM ^
Why would talking about what you are referring to be an example of politics lol. It isn’t a secret - even blatter himself finally admitted how insanely stupid / extortionist this is. The only people who are defending it either live there or are Twitter bots.
November 20th, 2022 at 1:15 PM ^
Slaves..
They used slaves.
November 20th, 2022 at 12:49 PM ^
Fuck Qatar.
Fuck FIFA.
November 20th, 2022 at 1:04 PM ^
Grrrrrr a title says it all, then you added things!!
November 20th, 2022 at 1:12 PM ^
Qatar looked completely overmatched against Ecuador, who is probably the worst South American team in the tournament. Netherlands and Senegal should smoke them.
Big time matches start tomorrow with Netherlands-Senegal and the two Group B matches.
November 20th, 2022 at 1:49 PM ^
Ecuador was 15th in ELO of the teams in the tournament- while they're technically the lowest ranked South American team, they're absolutely not a slouch. Not the be-all-end-all but they're only 3 spots behind England.

No politics?! Anybody with the audacity to post this knows exactly what they are doing.
Sorry but I'm gonna go ahead and hope that slavery isn't protected here.
This entire Qatar - Fifa situation has been wrought with TERRIBLE human rights violations.
Please, please do NOT support this, don't watch it, don't give it anything positive.
November 20th, 2022 at 2:56 PM ^
FIFA and its World Cup organization need to be replaced by a more transparent, rule-based organization rooted in fairly representing the interests of world soccer’s major stake-holders, namely, the fans and the players. Fans and players need to be the focus of any sports organization in order to insure their mutual interests are served. Other interests, such as country politics, media profits, etc. should not be the driving force in world soccer decision-making.
November 20th, 2022 at 3:13 PM ^
Can't do it. I love football, and have watched every WC since 90, but you've gotta draw the line somewhere.
