'Speak for Yourself' on Jim Harbaugh

Submitted by Gavia immer_MI on

Jason Whitlock and Joel Klatt discuss whether or not Harbaugh's "antics" are overplayed at this point. Personally, I wasn't keen on them at first, but I honestly can't get enough of the guy now. I don't get Whitlock's argument that 4 and 5 star recriuts really only want to hear about how to get to the NFL. Sure, that's part of it. But these are competitive young men that still want to win and have fun along the way. What will/would be interesting to hear is the perspective of players that have graduated from playing under Harbaugh and whether his "antics" played a role in their recruitment.

"What will/would be interesting to hear is the perspective of players that have graduated from playing under Harbaugh and whether his "antics" played a role in their recruitment."

But what you are requesting would take actual journalistic effort.

That's an accurate point.  However, most 18 year old kids also want to play for someone they feel cares about them as a person, and someone they can believe in and look up to.  When all factors are equal, Harbaugh's personality is going to trump any other coach in the country.  I believe we are just scratching the surface on how great our recruiting is going to be!

Kids pick schools like people vote. A lot of them are concerned with the same issues, but different recruits prioritize the issues differently. Some kids really care about the degree they are getting, or the prestige of the program, while many kids do want to get to the league (which could be the "economy" of the voting/recruiting analogy).

Whitlock is a tool, and Klatt isn't any better.  But I guess if your SEC alum radio show host Greg McElroy is praising Harbaugh, then you probably need to do some damage control on the main network, eh?

Klatt is actually not bad and probably one of the best analysts and color guys going right now. Him and Gus Johnson calling games is the number one reason I'm excited for the move to FS1. Whitlock on the other hand is a reanimated dumpster fire and is bad and should feel bad.

Keep in mind that these talking heads have no idea what they are talking about. If they are strictly journalists, they don't understand athletes or athletic culture to begin with because they've never lived it, and if they were athletes their careers were failures and their limited knowledge of athletics isn't useful or they'd still be playing, managing, or coaching their respective fields.

Mr. GoBlueMAGNUS, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Klatt's arguments were dead on. And for as much of an ass as Whitlock is, he apparently took whatever "tone it down" message he received seriously. No race baiting. No hot takes. No trolling. Just one guy who's calmly wrong and another guy calmly setting him straight. I'll support a show like that.

I was fortunate enough to see upclose Coach Harbaugh interacting with a few current players in a non-football environment a short while ago.  There was no media present, just a social gathering, so it was less likely to be manufactured (though I think coach is coach, regardless of who is watching).

What I saw from Harbuagh towards his players was a very impressive combination of authority, respect, love, and humor.  It was clear that Harbaugh was the boss, but it came across in a way that showed he truely cared about them.  The players and coach clearly had a few inside jokes that they shared, but when coach got serious, the players got serious very quickly.

In my short interaction with Harbaugh, my biggest takeaway was how honest and upfront he is.  He made it clear that everyone who works for him knows how they're doing.  He specifically talked about confronting issues immediately and working to resolve that issue.  If you don't improve, you're out (out of the lineup if you're a player and out of the athletic department if you're an employee).

For the right group of people, that type of honesty can be empowering.  It doesn't play well with everyone, but I think for those who want to be great, they know they'll always get an honest assessment from someone who knows how to get them to where they want to be.

Lets just remember. Whitlock was the idiot who, upon DB's first and only football coaching hire, guaranteed Brady Hoke was going to win a national championship at some point.

With that in mind... why does anyone pay this idiot to speak his opinion?

Put Dhani in his place and now you have a real show. Srsly.

I've always wondered what two assholes talking out of said assholes looked like. Now I know. Harbaugh is a good coach who gets people excited. Sure, some kids only care about going pro, and Harbaugh can say "Look at San Diego. Look at Stanford. Look at me in the NFL. Look at me last year." And then he can point at UM and say how great a school and team it is. He just also supplements it with some character.

-1 Jason Whitlock for first trying  to make a point, he says to Joel "you were a highly sought after recruit" and Joel cuts in and says "I was a walk-on" .So Whitlock comes back with "well I was". Well I say Jason you did have a full ride but it was at Ball State! How sought after were you? I was convinced by this Brady Hoke lover when he was brought on as coach that we would be playing in the NC within a couple years.

So I went around making a bigger fool of myself by saying I believed him. When Hoke started bringing in guys like Kalis,Peppers I was even louder till the Sparties kept making that 5 star line look like fools who had know idea what they were doing out there. Well it didn't take long for me to start calling Whitlock, Whitless. I have enough of an easy time making myself look stupid. I didn't need any help from him. We live we learn and I now know Whitlock is witless..
