TomVH: QB Brett Hundley Offered

This is an offer that I was expecting to happen sooner, rather than later. QB Brett Hundley out of Chandler High School, in Arizona, received an offer from Michigan today. "They called my coach, Coach Ewan, and then he told me they had offered," said Hundley.

This one is exciting for me, because it's another Michigan recruit in my home state. I saw Brett play this past season, and he's the real deal. He's a 6-foot-4, 210-pound athletic dual threat quarterback. He says his strengths are, "Leadership, mobility, I'm coachable, and I have a pretty strong arm. I do think I need to work on my footwork, though." I would add that academics are a strong point for Brett, since he carries a 3.9 GPA.

Hundley holds offers now from Arizona, ASU, LSU, Oregon, Nebraska, Stanford, UCLA, Washington, and Michigan just to name a few. He hasn't started to focus on recruiting yet, and told me, "No one's in the lead right now. Everything is wide open for me. I'm going to start taking trips in June, or July. After that I'll start all my officials, when I'm allowed to." When asked if Michigan will receive one of those visits, he said, "I'm definitely going to talk to my dad about that one."

Chandler High is in spring practice right now, and I will be heading out to watch this coming week. I'll have some practice footage, and possibly a video interview sometime later this week.

We are in a good position to grab a very talened QB in this class. Between Braxton Miller and Cardale Jones. Or if we can get  Marquise Williams or Hudley or Kevin Soussa. We will finally be looking at a deep stable of capable QB's. Always feels good to know you have 3-4 solid QB's

You'll notice the first play of his tape is a read option keeper, too. I couldn't really gauge his interest level, so we'll have to wait and see if Michigan gets a visit out of him.

some of his film looks sped up. cant be positive but if u held a gun to my head and asked if it was or wasnt i would say it was. i dont think hes got elite speed(say DROB) but hes got enough speed(say colt mccoy). strong arm, stays in the "pocket" and will take a hit, accurate on the deep ball, throws well on the run. he also escapes pressure rather easily while keeping his eyes downfield to continue looking for a WR. his release is kinda...i cant think of the word. nothing a qb coach cant fix ina year. looks like a solid prospect to me.

Kid looks good out there.  I like the wiggle and his throwing ability outside of the pocket, and the grades are really a positive.  My only concern with these guys is that they rely so heavily on their athleticism when the rush comes that you are never sure how accurate they are when they need to just whistle a ball into a window.  He had a could of nice completions into coverage, but that is always the one fault that seems to pop up with these uber-athletes.  Still, would be great if he gave UM a look.

I live in Chandler and have seen Hundley in person on a few occasions, and he's definitely the whole package (speed, strength, VERY strong arm and reasonably accurate). He actually seems quite similar overall to Devin Gardner.

The one weakness I saw in limited scouting was indecisiveness in the pocket -- he didn't seem to have a grasp of exactly what he wanted to do on some passing plays. But he also didn't take off at the first hint of pressure; he let the play develop and sometimes just ended up waiting too long.

It should also be noted that much of the highlight video is footage against Hamilton (black unis, silver helmets), which is probably the best team in the state and one with several D-I prospects. This isn't your typical "awesome athlete physically destroys 5-foot-8 future engineers" highlight reel.

And last year was his first as a full-time starter, so he's got plenty of room for improvement. Obviously I'd love to see him at UM.

I would actually disagree with the "very strong arm" part.  He looks like a good overall player (I'd expect him to be a 4-star when Rivals ranks him), but there were several times where it seemed like the receivers were waiting an extra split second for the ball to get to them.  He did have a couple throws that were rockets, but they didn't seem to be the norm.

He has excellent balance when he runs the ball, despite being 6'4".  He reminds me a little bit of Masoli in that respect, although Masoli isn't quite that big.  And hopefully Hundley is smarter than Masoli, too.  It would be hard not to be.

Perhaps I should clarify about the "very strong arm" comment. His throws from the pocket won't evoke comparisons to Brett Favre, but I've seen him make some downfield throws while rolling out that were extremely impressive. I was referring more to distance than velocity.

Masoli's a good comparison though. Hundley is very strong and has excellent balance, which makes him tough to bring down.

Which would definitely help in his transition. The only thing I would say is a definite for him to work on would be to keep his eyes down field when he starts to run. I noticed that on plays when the pocket collasped he took off and never looked for his receivers , but overall very good prospect.

I watched Hundley play twice this year.  Incredible.  A true man-among-boys; of course, it's just HS.  I thought he looked like a HS-version of Vince Young -- sorry to bring him up on this Michigan blog.  Obviously, not quite as fast as Robinson (who is?) or as accurate as Brady, but I can't remember a Michigan QB with a total package anywhere close to Hundley's.  He was the big school QB of the year as a junior and almost single-handedly led Chandler into the playoffs. I sent Michigan a letter begging them to get this guy on their radar after the second game of the season (I'm sure my letter went right into the circular file but what the heck).  He is as good as his hype but I would be extremely surprised if he gave Michigan much consideration.  Mark my words, whatever team lands him will be playing in a BCS bowl game in 4 years.  For God's sake, I hope Michigan doesn't schedule his recruiting trip in the winter!!
