WTKA Roundtable 12/3/2020: Stand and Cheer the Brave Comment Count

Seth December 3rd, 2020 at 2:38 PM

Things discussed:

  • Herbstreit's conspiracy theory and Q-Anon the fanbase
  • Big Ten rules exist to make Ohio State happy.
  • Seth, a very huge and sincere Lions fan, wants Detroit to get Jim Harbaugh.
  • Michigan would probably have to start Dan Villari versus Ohio State.
  • Hoops! Turnovers are an issue. Oakland's zone frustrated them until they went to Dickinson
  • Advocating for Johns minutes over Big Country minutes. Even when Johns isn't having a good game he's getting you OREBs.
  • Starting not Dickinson does bake in a run after the first media timeout.
  • Hockey things: ND and PSU were predictable. World Juniors gutting us for the Minnesota series.

If The Big Ten allows Osu to make up a game but refused to allow Nebraska to schedule any other games or make up games when the requested to make up with a Big Ten Team is absolute BS!  And risks losing the conference all together.  Nebraska would be in it's absolute right to leave the Big Ten Conference!  And I wouldn't blame them one bit!  The big ten has snubbed it's nose at Nebraska at every turn.  So if they change rules for Ohio State, the fall out will be massive!

It would be a PR issue for UN to leave, but they would take the brunt of the hit when it's all said and done.  They have no landing place, and would immediately lose the dozens of millions in TV revenue the B1G shares with them.  The remaining B1G schools would just get a bigger share.

Not saying they wouldn't have a great point, but who would want  them?  Not the Big 12, whom they already spurned for the B1G.  Not the PAC-12 - they're full and UN is too far east.  Probably the Mountain West, if they can find space.  I'm sure they'd drop someone to get Nebraska, though.  Guess they could go it as an independent, because it's worked so well for ND.

So yeah, leave in a huff for a G5 conference.

Nebraska isn't going anywhere...

Nebraska could posture about leaving B1G threat but they would lose out millions of dollars of revenue sharing that they wouldn't get from other conferences.

B1G will find a way to help out OSU bc it's their best chance of getting money if OSU makes the playoff. The potential loss of revenue is huge if OSU don't make it because of COVID and no B1G title game. It's in their best interest to have OSU to have a game or two. If Michigan is in the same position, you bet your ass the B1G would bend over for Michigan to get money for the playoff appearance.

Yes, Nebraska would have a point but I think most would be fine if they left.  They aren't particularly great at a wide range of sports, aren't a recruiting hotbed, and in a number of academic rankings UNL is behind the other members of the conference.  So I'm not sure you're going to see a lot of tears shed if they absconded for some other conference.

The Big Ten and all of College Football would care.  Some fans may not but that would be completely foolish.  All fans of Big Ten Programs should care if the Big Ten were to roll over rules for Ohio State that they weren't willing to budge for any other member conference!  Every program was emphatically told these are the rules if you want to have a season at all.

Should the BigTen roll over for osu you are shoving that down the arse of every big ten football program.

On the overall, nebraska has a large national fan base that fans are ignoring.  There is a reason the big ten went after Nebraska.  If you spurn any member program for one it will reverberate throughout college football.  Why and what fall out?  Consider the next time conference realignment happens.  Why would I join the Big Ten if it's already obvious the rules are set for one conference member above all others.  That's what killed the Big12 and why Nebraska is in the Big10, Colorado is in the Pac12, Texas A&M and Missouri are in the SEC.  So, why should Penn st, Michigan or Nebraska stay in the Big Ten at all if the rules are going to be set for osu?  Why should any member of the conference stay to be a scheduling puppet for osu?

If we were ranked top 8 and the only thing holding us back from a potential playoff spot was a rule pulled out of a hat 2 months ago, I would hope the B10 would step in and make a change.  And Nebraska wanted to play a OOC with a smaller or FCS school, so league Covid protocols would've been right out the window.

Why had I never noticed I could watch a video of The Roundtable? It's a visual treat!

Also, I'd seen Brian, but Sam, Craig, and Seth ALL looked different than I expected based on their voices.

Herbstriet was very calculated in his comments. He wants to bully Michigan into playing to help OSU and see that Michigan gets humiliated yet again. I hope Harbaugh doesn’t take the bait and play just to prove something. If Michigan is allowed to cancel by the Big Ten they need to. The bad PR hit they might take is nothing compared to how embarrassing the game would be.

Yikes.  We are now down to a 4th string 2-star freshman QB with no backups ?

  • McCaffrey opted-out
  • Milton injured
  • McNamara injured

Holy shit.

We've had a lot of injured players over the years - nagging injuries that aren't enough to end a season, but enough to interrupt some games and impact on the field play.  I'm seeing the QB issues this year as an extension of them.  It's time to start looking at the S&C aspects of conditioning, lifting, and stretching to see if that is playing a role.

Basketball recruiting: Three outstanding prospects remain hanging out there. Holmgren, Hardy and Reid. It would be fun to be a fly on the wall and know what Coach is thinking here.
