WTKA Roundtable 10/21/2021: Cotton Candy Talk Comment Count

Seth October 21st, 2021 at 10:31 AM

Things discussed:

  • Sam: “Michigan State has the softest fanbase in sports.” <—This Sam talking, MSU fans. Please direct your ire at him.
  • Northwestern: Their middle linebackers are terrible, they lost Hankwitz and most of their good players. They’re on their third quarterback and their second blue chip transfer quarterback from and FBS school in South Carolina.
  • I didn’t get this in because Brian cut me off on the roster breakdown but their slot receiver transfer from Kansas is pretty slick, and WMU is the comp.
  • Northwestern defense: their MLBs can’t take any kind of distractions, so they were good against Rutgers who just does the same thing to you every play, but got ruined by clever offenses like (yes, Sam) MSU’s and Nebraska’s.
  • Hoops: Long discussion about Purdue and are they or Michigan the favorites in the Big Ten? Purdue could be really good, can have both centers kill you, have young players popping, and a ceiling as high as Michigan’s. In Michigan’s favor: defense travels, and they’re going to be more consistent, whereas Purdue is going to have nights when the shots don’t fall.
  • Michigan’s backcourt: We are loving Bufkin, Jones is going to be an impact guy as a defender. Better than Smith? We think so.
  • Craig: Michigan fans are going to adore Tschetter.
  • Hockey: #1 after taking out #4 and #1 on the road (and semi-road). Bordeleau is a savant, and then you have a Kyle Connor (I said Brett Hull) on his wing in Brisson whose one-timer is absolutely lethal.
  • Power play could challenge for the record, if they can get the calls.
  • Really impressed with Portillo.
  • Can play old or young, and play back, giving up only one odd-man rush in a game to Minny State, or attack like they did against LSSU, giving up rushes to get more of them and 1980s you down with their talent.
  • Would Mel Tucker take the LSU job? Of course. Will he be the guy they offer? Less likely.

This is a confusing statement to me - isn't Rutgers offense all about distractions?  Against Michigan, it was all about jet motion and zone read.

Am I the only one that is OK with Tucker staying at MSU at this point?  I will change my opinion if MSU closes the season real strong, but like, they kind of give off that Iowa vibe where they feel real fortunate to be undefeated.  They've got outgained in 3 of their 6 games against FBS opponents.  And the hard part of the schedule is just starting.  The advanced numbers are much more meh on them and they hit on some transfers.  The only other history with Tucker is one 5-7 season with Colorado where they did get better from the previous season.  Like is Tucker a Brady Hoke who has won three coach of the year awards in three different conferences and like the only coach to start 6-0 4 different times with different teams?  Or his Tucker actually really really good.  I can see a road where Tucker goes to LSU, turns out he's just actually OK, and him leaving makes room for Fickell at MSU who I think is actually good.

Eh, I mean I think MSU is an upgrade over Cinci.  I didn't think he would follow Dantonio because MSU as an athletic department and football program were more of a mess two years ago and I figured he would wait until a big time program opens up.  Big time program still could open up for sure, there are some dominos to fall.  But Fickell seems like a midwestern guy and there are no big midwestern programs looking to open.  So I could see him make a change to MSU which would pay more, have more resources, and be in a bigger conference.  Especially if Cinci somehow gets left out of the playoff this year.

I think Tucker is a decent coach but this year absolutely feels like a charmed one.  Like, you usually don't pick up the nation's #1 rusher in the transfer portal who completely covers up for your issues on the offensive line.  And defensively they feel like they've taken a step back from the Dantonio era; I know the advanced metrics still have them in the top 20 defensively but it's still a defense giving up over 400 yards a game (they're giving up 5 more yards a game than LSU, for perspective) but only 4.85 yards per play and 18 points a game, which means they are out there a lot and may just be getting lucky with the "bend but don't break" mantra.  That can turn on a dime for a team, and even against IU you saw them repeatedly give up long drives and IU settling for FGs in the redzone.  Some of that is skill but they've allowed 26 redzone attempts (UM has allowed 12), so you do wonder if that's sustainable as the opponent improves.  And offensively they aren't particularly efficient but are explosive, yet against teams like IU, Nebraska, and even Rutgers for a while they really struggled to put together drives.

I do think Tucker is going to leave if a better job comes up. He's almost 50 years old and he's likely aware that coaching opportunities at top spots rarely become available and even less so are you considered a top option.  He might not go to LSU but I could absolutely see him being wooed by major job openings this offseason.

I pretty much agree with everything you say except that I don't think Walker is covering up for the OL.  Against the teams that are generally disciplined, Walker has been workman like to bottled up.  What he's really good as the times when the OL can deliver him to the second level; he is superb at taking glancing hits, sliding out of arm tackles and the subtle moves that make that 5 yards into huge chunks.  He also has take a lot more carries for losses than, say UMs, RB which have like 1 or 2 carries for losses on the year?

I think your point that not only do you need a job to come open, you also need to be in a position to take it is key.  Tucker deserves some real credit for getting as much out of this team as he has, but he has also had some real bounces go his way.  Nebraska and Indiana were both games lost by the opposition rather than games won by the Spartans.   Presumably Walker is NFL bound.   It may be challenging to match this year’s success.

I'm not ready to say Jones is going to be better than Smith.  I think his size and length are going to be better for defense, but I don't think we really got burned by Smith's defense much last year.  At the same time, Smith was the straw that stirred the drink on offense and had to be on the court for 30+ minutes so he could direct traffic, distribute the ball, set things up, etc. He also shot over 40% from three.

I think Jones is going to finish inside the line more and might be our "uh-oh....shot clock is expiring and we need a basket" guy.  I also think he will disrupt passing lanes more than Smith.  But I don't put a lot of value on steals simply because I think guys with high steal numbers tend to be gamblers.  Juwan's defense is about being sound as a unit, not about turnovers.

I'm excited for Jones and what he brings, but I'm more worried about his shooting and ball-screen passing than I am excited for his defense.

Eh. Smith's shooting will be missed, and Smith might be the better passer, but I think you're downplaying the importance of driving ability way too much. That was something we really lacked last year, a player who could go get a basket when the shot clock is expiring. You don't want to build your offense around that, but it's really valuable to have at least one guy with that ability, especially on nights when your jumpers aren't falling. That would have been huge in last year's UCLA game, for example...

Of course!  But Smith wasn't getting that matchup last year anyway....Eli or Franz was.  I do think Jones will offset some of the loss of Franz since it remains to be seen who guards the athletic wings we will face.  Brooks/Jones should be good.

If Jones can shoot 35% and be decent at the PnR he will be all conference with this surrounding cast.  I just don't want to minimize how well Smith ran the PnR and shot the ball.

I would be less surprised if Jones was an All-American than if your assessment is correct. Devante is a very, very high IQ basketball player...and significantly more athletically talented than the last two Michigan PGs...and is a "lights-out" shooter relative to one of those "two". Michigan may have the best guard tandem in the nation this year.

OK. Yeah. I said it. It might be among the stupidest 5 things I have said on the RT and that's a high bar. But, it is my instinct.

I am counting on you, MichFan1997, to have my back with a really good excuse; maybe something to do with medications or being completely in my cups or being addicted to roofs and jets.

Wisconsin winning out is maybe unlikely, but not stupid.  They may very well be favored in every game from here on out.  Some fancystats have them as a toss-up with Iowa on a neutral field, and they get the game in Madison.  They also get the Nebraska game in Madison.  As mentioned on TKA.

(Yeah I know, Graham Mertz.  But also: Spencer Petras and Tanner Morgan.)

It's also possible the West champ will have 3 conference losses.  Some people really jumped the gun on assuming Iowa could cruise the rest of the way.

Does anyone else find Seth too negative talking about these guys sometimes? I mean, they're college players, not pros. I get that NW is bad, he just really dogs on guys a lot. I really appreciate his knowledge and how he's carried this site the last few months. But I've never really been a fan of his writing 'voice' overall.

He's just more oriented toward and focused on the analytical evaluations of players.  Objectively, they are bad players and it probably plays out in the film and stats that Seth has watched.  It's probably easy to get lost in the weeds when you're doing UFRs.  It's probably not necessary to go into details how bad a particular player is by name, but since we are now trending toward treating players like professionals who can make money off their image/likeness or easily transfer to another team, etc.  I think it's a little more fair game then before. I would still prefer if we treated them like the college kids they are who often are just trying to do their best and have fun playing a sport they enjoy.  I presume most are in that boat and do not have aspirations to play in the NFL.
