Thanksgiving Site Notes
You'll notice some more obtrusive ads on the site for Dunning Toyota, as we've just sold some local advertising(!) for the first time. This is a temporary "site takeover" similar to what Gawker does that will run through Sunday. In the future these types of events will be rare—maybe a couple days a month if we can swing it—so we don't upset the balance between making the site a success and annoying the people who make it so. (This is you.)
Other site bits:
Holiday schedule: UFR the second tomorrow—it's the offense so no danger of throwing up turkey—and a couple other scattered posts but a relatively lighter schedule; full preview Friday as per usual.
Friendly fire: yesterday's post about the offense was hot on the heels of an in-depth diary that looked at a lot of different stats. One of those was points per drive, which I've seen bandied about many places by Rodriguez haterz as a reason the offense isn't actually two standard deviations above the mean. I took issue with that, but wasn't trying to bash blublooded, the author. The timing looks bad. So to be explicit: no offense was intended.

Brian, your hard work is second to none, and for this we all thank you. Can't wait to read the offensive UFR and the preview.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Great work as always....

I wouldn't worry about it, I don't think many folks on the blog took notice of that particular diary {smirk}.

I hope blublooded feels the same. Have a happy Turkey Day, all!

I just went and bought two Priuses....um.....Prii......Priora..... Trading them in for two Camrys.
Happy Holidays!

Personally I don't mind those kinds of ads. I'm getting ready to buy a new car soon anyway. Good deal.

But defence was implied! Ha! Sorry - lame attempt at offense/defence comparison...
Happy Turkey Day to everyone.

what kind of warlock IT people does Dunning Toyota have that can infiltrate my AdBlock
November 24th, 2010 at 5:24 PM ^
I've been wondering the same thing for 2 days now.

I think I will be forced to watch the game by my girlfriend's family.
November 24th, 2010 at 5:33 PM ^
Watching both the lions and The Game somewhere in Tulsa, OK. It's like being the only one dressing up for Halloween.

in Evansville. Fortunately not too many people here care. Unfortunately they know that I do.
This is one weekend where my split allegiance may be helpful ... unless Indiana wins, in which case I will spend the drive back to Indy quietly banging my head on the dashboard.

I can root for both teams...

You probably want to move that background for the outer-container down 110px or so because the ad is cut off by the banner at the top of the page right now. I can't believe I just helped an advertiser out, but it irked me that is was obscured.
November 24th, 2010 at 5:50 PM ^
To be honest, the ad isn't that obtrusive. If you wanted to make it permanent, I wouldn't be that upset, I can't knock the hustle.

..."CSS is awesome" moment with the ad placement: in FF/Safari on MacOS: linky

Brian:
You deserve to make money as much as anyone who is out there. I would be annoyed by pop-ups requiring me to close them, or being kicked to an ad page and having to click my way back like a lot of blogs do, but I would never be the least bit offended by more ads if you felt you needed them.
The work you do here is great, and provides such a service for so many that I don't really feel any user should be annoyed by a few more ads that don't force them to actually do anything. If I felt like buying anything, I would rather click through from here than anywhere else. I would go so far as to suggest that you have an unobtrusive but permanent Amazon affiliate link so that we could go through here whenever we want to buy books, DVD's, etc.
Thanks for all of your hard work and for providing such a great place for Michigan fans to congregate.
I would suggest to anyone who is irriated by ads here to click onto any of the Professional Wrestling blogs that show up high in Google. If you actually find your way back here after that onslaught, I would imagine that your reaction would be similar to that of Dorothy waking back up in Kansas.

I agree completely, but I lookforward to when the ads are for Ford, GM or Chrysler dealers instead. I'm too old school, and have too much family working at the formerly big but still 3 to by a toyota

What ad?
November 24th, 2010 at 8:07 PM ^
Actually, I don't see what the problem anyone would have with advertising as long as you're not forced to click on it. Anything that keeps gainful employment that allows Brian to keep doing this for "free" is as ok to me as luxury boxes that mean there's not a ticket price increase. The fact that it's a local company that keeps people buying local is all the better. Never apologize for making this your job.

And nice clarification on the bad timing of the posts. See everyone, that wasn't that hard.
November 25th, 2010 at 8:16 AM ^
The ad doesn't bother me in the least.

Can I stuff myself with enough turkey to induce a tryptophan coma that will last till Saturday night?
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! GO BLUE!!

I want to save more and then ask Dunning Toyota of Ann Arbor about the Penny on Black Friday Weekend! I must know about it!!!!!!!

And a very special holiday greeting from Dave Brandon:

Does anyone else have a Dunning ad trying to be over on the side of the page, but it's behind the actual site stuff? I'm not annoyed by the ads, I'm just annoyed that because it's hidden, I have to see what it looks like... and I can't!
November 25th, 2010 at 8:26 AM ^
Last I checked, earning an income is a good thing.
Brian shouldn't have to sell a kidney to keep MGoBlog humming.

SWAG out of my ignorance: Even $10 a month average from all the users would probably have the operators of this amazing site without worry? Hope everyone is throwing down some coin when they can.
The recruiting insider info alone would probably cost us way more than $10 on a monthly subscription.
