Terrance Williams Commits to Michigan Comment Count

Matt EM January 1st, 2020 at 6:03 PM

Well, that was quick. Two days after completing his official visit to Ann Arbor, Terrance Williams gave the Wolverines their fourth commitment of the 2020 class with his announcement on Twitter this evening.

GURU RANKINGS

Rivals ESPN 247 Endless Motor
4*, #94 overall,
#23 SF
4*, #77 Ovr,
#14 PF, #1 DC
4*, #100 Ovr,
#22 PF, #1 DC
4*, #108 Ovr,
#23 PF

Three of the services generally agree on Terrance being a back-end four star, while ESPN is a bit more bullish with their top 75ish assessment. There is a consensus height for Williams at 6'6, with some disagreement on girth. Rivals sees a lighter version of Terrance at 210, while ESPN and 247 go slightly higher at 215 pounds. Endless Motor lists him at 230. The most recent measurement has him at 6'4.5 without shoes and a tad short of 224 pounds via the 2018 Nike Elite 100.  My recent eye test in December at the National High School Hoops Festival in tandem with the 2018 measurement likely means he's closer to 230 than 210.

Full post coming tomorrow.

Starting the decade off right!  So glad to still be a strong basketball power under Howard.  Look forward to beating Ohio State and winning games after the regular season. Go Blue!

Nice to see this post.

OT: I cringe every time I read "height with shoes" or "height without shoes." Are basketball fans incapable of adding 1.5" to someone's height? (And, yes -- 1.5" seems to be the standard.)

Zeb should play PG for Michigan. He has a pretty good handle, penetrates and passes well...and I will be damned but he can score from more than 5 feet from the basket!!! He's not a pure shooter but his defender will have to stay, at least, somewhat attached to him.

All I have heard is that Juwan is pursuing Christopher. Hopefully he is trying to flip Namari too. Surely there are others.

Loy Vaught was 6' 9" and a rebounding machine with no outside shot at all (two 3-pointers in 4 years in college, 21 3's in his entire pro career), so I'm not sure this is an apt comparison.

Vaught was a 4-5 who played almost exclusively inside .  This guy is a 3-4 with a perimeter game.

I agree that (from this small highlight sample) he looks more like a 3 than a 4. While there is no defensive film here, he looks a bit short to hang with B10 4's. I'd rather see him lose a few lbs. and get quick enough to guard 3's. But he has a sweet stroke, strong body and could be a fantastic wing. Maybe a Miles Bridges type.

I watched Rick Fox play a lot in HS. Here, the similarity between Terrence and Rick is uncanny. And I love what a kid like this brings to the floor. He undersells himself yet is clearly a very confident player. He is far from an Isaiah Todd ceiling but his floor might be higher. And best of all, it sure looks as though he loves competing and playing the game-and being a good teammate. He looks to me to be a player who quietly does his job-and just wins you games.

Terrance may be the next "round mound of rebound" too.

Truly remarkable that Howard could put together such a great class (and more to come) in such a short timeframe. What will he do with a year or two to work with? I can’t wait to find out.

We can’t hang with OSU in football, in large part, because we can’t recruit at their level. The rest of the Big Ten is going to have that problem with Michigan in basketball if Howard can keep this up.

in a sport  where most basketball coaches look like they could moonlight as your accountant, the ability to have a guy like Juwan who's been there, done that at every level of basketball as a player and a highly touted asst coach, at a place like Michigan, big time college with history of success, is critical and extremely appealing to top recruits

We've been a sleeping giant for a while, finally awoken by Beilein. Howard could take us to even higher levels.

One thing really stands out on his video to me--everything he does is SMOOTH.  His drive to the basket, his shot, everything is very under control and consistent.

I dunno that this guy is going to be a super-star, but he looks like a really good piece to have out there at the 3-4 that you can count on for 10-15 points  a game with some rebounding.  Reminds me of GRIII with potentially a better outside shot.

As a coach a major part of your task is to get your players to play well and to their potential. This kid does this all by himself. He plays hard and smart and under control...give him a few pointers here and there and he is good to go. I'll bet that he does all the little things that go unnoticed by the viewing public.

Went to the Gonzaga vs. St. John's game last night to see Terrance play. Gonzaga pulled away in the 4Q and won by 20. I'm not a recruiting expert, but . . . it almost looked like he was playing with the flu - low motor, seemed to be conserving energy while others guy on the court were going balls-out, looked a little cranky in a spirited game. A positive spin on this would be to say he was poised and seemed to pick his spots, but was pretty passive otherwise. Often would not bother running down the court to chase the action.

Not sure if he scored in the first half, but probably ended up with 10-15 points. On this one night, looked like the 3rd or 4th best player on his team behind a three-star teammate, who is committed to Butler, and some talented underclassmen. Hit 1-2 threes and had some nice takes to the rack (he is sturdy and can absorb contact taking it to the basket), but was also well-defended much of the night by a freshman forward on SJ.
