One Frame At A Time: Purdue & Minnesota (GRIII Edition)
Between game-winners, Showtime-esque fast breaks, the alley-oop bonanza, and the many other plays of note from Purdue and Minnesota, OFAAT is split into two parts. Part one belongs to Glenn Robinson III.

Glenn Robinson's alley-oop finish over two Minnesota players elicited reactions normally reserved for Cirque du Soleil, the Top Thrill Dragster, or the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The above screencaps come from one replay of GRIII's slam. So does this:
The man on the left reacts to this spectacular feat with a golf clap. The woman on the right is... dead? Even her reserved husband(?) appears concerned:
"Honey? Honey? ... Well, it was a hell of a way to go."
Keep this clearly deceased woman in your thoughts as you watch GRIII inflict pain and suffering upon all who dare cross his path, after the jump.
[JUMP, but not as high as GRIII or your knees will literally explode into a confetti of ligaments and bone shards.]
As usual, click the stills to open each GIF in a lightbox, and don't forget to vote for your favorite at the end of the post.
8. Showtime Ann Arbor
It's for the best that Robinson couldn't quite dunk this, because there'd be another job opening at MGoBlog while I waited at the River Styx with Purple Shirt Lady.
7. Boxouts Don't Exist 11 Feet in the Air
I'd be pleased with myself, too.
6. One-Man Fast Break Defense
Well, Andre Hollins, you tried. You even jumped first and managed to shield the defender with your body. It's not your fault said defender is made of Flubber.
5. Just Gonna Hang Up Here For a While
His head didn't even come that close to hitting the backboard. WEAK. [/watches 47 more times]
4. Even His Handshakes Are Spectacular
This is spellbinding.
3. Fast Break Blouses
The integrity of the backboard has been compromised. "Blouses" hang, reverse angle:
Full play wsg Andrew Dakich:
Pretty sure Dakich is attempting astral projection.
2. Ballgame
Tiger Woodsian reaction from GRIII. Replay angle with Caris LeVert's absurd baseball pass:
The Paint Crew. Oh man, The Paint Crew.
Extra schadenfreude points for the "DEFENSE LIVES HERE" sign.
Still waiting on that offer, Purdue.
FRAMES OF THE GAMES: EAT MY SHORTS
I be like dang.
I be like daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang.
I be like dang, Charles Buggs, that's not the optimal view of that dunk.
VOTE
Thought for sure GRIII was going to get T'ed up for hanging on the "blouses" dunk. Think he let go a split second soon enough.
Nah, he was hanging while Buggs got out of the way. Plus he was continually (albeit slowly) going down, whereas doing a chin-up a la Payne will get you a T.
Payne's was certainly worse, just seems the refs have a quick whistle regarding that particular issue.
Not that I think either of you are disagreeing, but I think that when players hold onto the rim and actually hang - elbow straight, looking down at where they are landing like GR3 does - they aren't getting a call. If they start doing chin ups, swinging around, etc. that's where the tech comes into play.
"They were settin these fruity picks."
In the first clip, Jordan Morgan actually signals for an alley oop, but Nik has eyes for GR3. I love me some JMo two handed/2 foot jump dunk.
it's a good thing GRIII hung on to the rim as long as he did in Eat My Shorts, or he might've landed badly on Buggs!!
I think part of the reason he fails to boxout sometimes is because he's trying to time a spectacular jump over everyone - which works great if the ball goes the direction he expects, but not so great if it takes another angle.
Ace - excellent work as usual. OFAAT is one of the posts I look forward to most, thanks for doing them! (and very excited to get 2 versions this week!)
Different angles is just splitting votes. Not that it matters for this one.
Balls to the face never ceases to amuse.
For Obituaries....she was a swell gal who loved her Wolverines. Never missed a home game in more than 40 years. A good friend of Cazzy Russell.
Is there something GR3 hates about Minnesota that makes him want to show up and do spetacular feets of athleticism?
Wasn't his 360 dunk against them or am I mistaken?
In the first game this year before he hurt his leg at the start of the second half. For some reason he just owns Minnesota.
They're fairly athletic, they like to run, and games with them always yield transitional opportunities. They also have mental lapses, leading to openings for a GRIII type athlete to do something spectacular. It's a wide open end to end game when we play them, instead of trench warfare, which isn't as much his thing.
Everybody always talks about teams peaking at the right time heading into March Madness, but I have to say that having GR3 peaking heading into March Madness is just as critical to this team if they are to have a deep tourney run. With Stauskas and Levert both hot, teams can focus on letting one get you and shutting down the other...Howevuh, if GR3 is playing like this in the tourney, teams can try and shut one down, and the other two will lead us on to victory. Welcome to the game GR3!!!!
The "eat my shorts" play afforded me the chance to explain to my wife and her mother what I meant after i screamed "OMG - Robinson just tea-bagged a Gopher",
Apparently neither of them were familiar with that particular term until Saturday night.
I've always enjoyed the clip of Paulus getting teabagged.
Slightly off-topic, but then, fuck Duke, and, also, Paulus is a Buckeye now, so not entirely off-topic.

(ugh, I do not know how to post video clips)
Watch the guy directly behind the D in the Defense Lives Here sign. He ceases to exist after the buzzer beater.
back during the Amaker era. Can't even remember the opponent, but Crisler was half-empty, there were few students sitting in the lower bowl, and I was sitting on those cushy seats up in the upper bowl. There were two elderly ladies sitting a couple of rows in front of me and one of them was knitting the whole game. They never uttered a peep one way or the other during the game, but when something good happened for UM, one of them would thump her cane on the floor next to her seat.
The best word to describe the atmosphere there that night is somnolent.
I am hoping you'll put together a GRIII .gif collection that includes several crazy dunks into one winningest .gif of all time.
Yes, please?
At first I thought GRIII was just goofing around giving Caris a sloppy handshake, then I realized they're doing possibly the most intricate handshake I've ever seen
That picture of Glen should be made into a wall poster. Amazing jam.
