One Frame At A Time: Michigan State Comment Count

Ace

Like a 29-point soul-snatching win over Michigan State wasn't going to merit a GIFs post.

[After THE JUMP: more dunks, glorious double Izzoface, the walkoff, and more.]

HONORABLE MENTION

Nick Ward's Grayson Allen moment.
Good lord, Miles Bridges.
Walton pull-up three on Tum Tum.
Simpson floater.
Walton to Donnal for the and-one.

10. X AND THE FOUL

This is a rather welcome development, not to mention impeccably timed for a matchup with Cassius Winston.

9. PILFER AND PROFIT

This is 90% Walton but that's some pretty english on the outlet from Simpson.

8. MO STEALS/MO BUCKETS

Perhaps not the prettiest of plays. Impressive balance, though.

7. HOT SAUCE

Take a seat, Matt McQuaid.

6. BIG MAN TAKEOVER

Eron Harris wisely wanted no part of that finish.

5. GIVE 'EM THE SLIP

Kenny Goins did not have a good night in the post-basket staredown department.

4. HAPPY CAPTAIN

Same.

3. WALKOFF FROM CARIS CORNER

Why, yes, we have seen this before.

2. WORTH THE TECH

Hell, it was probably worth two. Alternate angle.

FRAMES OF THE GAME: SAD IZZO BALL TOSS DOUBLE IZZOFACE SPECTACULARRRR

The Izzo head in the stands at the very end elevates this to legendary GIF territory.

Funny you should call it soul-searching, cuz when I was watching the game at work last night, a co-worker commented about the bug lead and my response was "I don't just want to beat them, I want to break their spirit and steal their souls"

As much as I enjoyed watching the beatdown last night, I was feeling a bit conflicted. I'm starting to worry about a meaningless late season push that will take the heat off of Beilein, and result in another year or two of middling performances. That's a topic for a different thread, but that was how I was feeling.

But when I saw Walton with his big goofy-ass grin and his head wobbling in time with the fight song, I couldn't help it. I didn't care about Beilein's job security or whether we'd make the tournament or anything. Just happiness.

I appreciate that people are not satisfied with MBB's performance since 2014. However, Beilein is a mature and self-aware professional and we can trust the AD and MBB to figure out what will be best for the program - whether that analysis occurs this year or next.

Anyone rooting for one of our teams to lose is a moron.

I openly hoped for Michigan football to lose to Maryland in 2014.  They were 5-5.  Losses to Maryland and OSU (which was inevitable) would mean a 5-7 finish, no bowl, and Hoke would have to be fired.

I rooted for that because Brady Hoke was a nice guy and possibly the worst head football coach I've ever seen.  I rooted for that because Michigan Football had become an absolute shit-show and was in desperate need of a course correction.

I rooted for a loss in a single game to ensure considerably more winning in the future.  They did lose, and it worked out as well as I could have possibly imagined.

As it relates here, I have yet to come close to that kind of despair with Beilein and the basketball team, but what this poster is saying makes perfect sense.  Sometimes the greater good of the program is worth suffering a couple losses.

He's still rooting for Michigan.

I can understand this on an intellectual level - you sacrifice short-term pleasure for long-term gain.  But on an emotional level I just can't do it.  I went to that Maryland game, and while I was feeling pretty numb about the team prior to the game, watching the seniors being honored, I really wanted them to go out with a win.  It worked itself out in the end, but I still feel bad for the guys who ended their career that way.  (Also, watching Maryland fans celebrate in our stadium was pretty disgusting.)

"On an emotional level", I couldn't stand to watch the Michigan football team be made into a bunch of clowns by, well, pretty much everybody.  MSU beat us by, I forget, 20?  Capped off by a 'Fuck You' touchdown when Dantonio "drove a stake" in us?  And then Brady Hoke bumbled up to a microphone and apologized to him?  Does anyone else remember that?  How did that make you feel?  On an emotional level?

Getting manhandled by Minnesota and Rutgers?  Dragging out the rain-soked Utah game to try to avoid an embarrassment which led to an empty stadium save for the 10,000 Ute fans?  Calling Notre Dame cowards and then losing 31-0?  Getting run off the field by Kansas State in the m-f'ing Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl?  Any of this ringing a bell?  Is this too intellectual?

We're all best friends in Harbaugh-world right now, but there was a large section of the fanbase that still wanted to retain Hoke.  Despite all that above.  With a win over Maryland and a miracle against OSU, he probably keeps his job.  His shortcomings were glaring.  The team was crap.  Recruiting was tanking.

"On an emotional level", I wanted Brady Hoke fired.

Your post is actually fair and reasonable. There's just a slight implication in the beginning that your approach is more pure.  And I know I can't talk about votes, but the idiotic negs on my last post just reek of holier-than-thou jackasses that feel exactly that but are too chicken-shit to post.  I felt bad for the guys who ended their career the same as you did.  Their loss helped assure that the next class didn't end on the same note.  On an emotional level, I wanted better for the current and future Michigan football players and fans than a meaningless, bullshit, pillow-fight, save-your-ass win over fucking Maryland.

On an emotional level.

...but I didn't say I was rooting against or ever have rooted against Michigan teams, or not wanted them to win.

I am capable. however, of thinking many different thoughts, even when they seem to be (or are in fact) in conflict with each other. I can both strongly desire for Michigan teams to win any individual game and also consider the larger consequences of winning or losing.

If you guys didn't feel this same conflict near the end of the Hoke era, you're lying.

I'm more than aware that our hoops team has some systemic flaws but anyone who thinks that Hoke is even in the same ballpark as Beilein as a coach or that the embarassement of the 2014 football team (on and off the field) is even close to this admittedly frustrating hoops season isn't watching the same program I am.

Agree that Hoke/Beilein isn't a great comparison.  Having said that, I don't think the 2014 team was an embarrassment off the field.  They were pretty much good guys who stayed out of trouble, went to class and graduated down the road.

If you mean the concussion thing, that was on Brandon.

Eh, you may be right, it was an inaccurate use of the term.

What I was trying to express was my frustration with the underlying insinuation of purer or superior fandom because they'd never, no never root against Michigan.

I find this debate similar to the Fournette/McCaffrey bowl game issue -- most of us can discuss different views on it in reasonable tones, but a few people always have to put on very serious faces and lecture about the consequences of players quitting on their teams or the loss of amateurism or somesuch, which completely derails the debate.

Anyway, I'm just rambling now and probably moving further from the point than nearer to it.

the opposite. What I saw last night made me realize how much I want Beilein to succeed. His offense and the hopefully gelling Donlon defense is a great brand of basketball to watch. A flash of what X can do, Matthews replacing Irvin and an experience front court makes me optimistic about the future.

a late season push would be meaningless. Being part of the tourney and the chance of making the sweet 16 is always worth it. Last season we had Notre Dame on the ropes and almost made it to the round of 32. Plus with the youngsters on the team it would give us some momentum for next year.

actually did not look intentional to me. I think that is a little bit of what Izzo was saying. I think he was saying that tripping is unacceptable but let me check the tape. And I don't think Ward is getting any extra laps for that not do I think he should be. Wagner sold it so though so it is what it is.

Those boys played hard for Beilein. If only D. Walton had one more year! If we go on a run...we may be able to squeeze into the tourney. I like us at home in every game and we should win at least 1 of the road games. Likely going to take a big thurs and Fri in the B1G tourney to cap it off. 22-12 is possible. Kids have to keep those black socks on though :)

When the Beilein offense visits the post, or the guards penetrate on the dribble, it opens up so many options...pick and roll, backcuts, open perimeter shooters, it's just so wonderful to watch when it's humming. Too often though, the ball stays 20+ feet away from the hoop, no movement, no flow, winding up in a long 3 that has little chance of success. I really wish they would stick to this game plan more, because man, it creates so much stress on the opponent. And the defensive effort was wonderful. I understand teams will have off nights, and not every game can be against a hated rival, but man, if they can bring this most of the season, there is no worrying about missing the tourney, and hell, maybe we could compete for conference titles and deep runs on the regular.
